Rick Gerard Image

Name: Rick Gerard
Contributor since: 2001

Rick started using After Effects in late 1994 when he was working on a TV documentary. He had always been interested in film; his dad had taught him how to use a 16mm movie camera when he was 15 and was even lucky enough to take a class from Ernie Crisp (1966 Television News Photographer of the Year). The support he received from others kept him going, as Rick remembers, “Every time I had a project, people showed up to help me learn.”

In addition to his interest in film production, Rick loves spending time outdoors, playing a wide variety of instruments (he was even in a Dixieland band!), and is a licensed pilot and former flight instructor. But when it comes down to it, he loves teaching and solving problems. “I've always wanted to be the guy that solved the problem. Contributing on the forums gives me the chance to do that for a new generation of film makers.”

His thoughts on the future of the production business? “The standards are so much higher now. The software is so much easier to use and so much more affordable. It behooves all of us with experience to warn the young that they need more than computer skills to succeed. Now, more than ever before, the ability to be outstanding is in the story telling, not in the image. I hope that I can help solve not only technical issues associated with creating an image, I hope I can help solve story problems that will give those with true talent and drive the opportunity to really succeed at a business that has provided me with a lifetime of enjoyment.”
