Yes, it seems dumb not to have suite members not play well together, not to share nearly all their genetic makeup. It's understandable, perhaps, when embarking on a path to integrate disparate products.

But, this may be part of the reasoning behind not actually tossing everything from every individual into the common melting pot:

I have a faint memory of having heard or read something about laws that make it necessary for a company to isolate development groups. I can't pin down the issue, but there's something about being able to identify costs for each unique product or project, either for taxing issues, profit/loss reporting, and/or separability for the purpose of selling off one unit without giving away proprietary corporate-wide trade secrets. General Motors owns/owned the rights to all or much of SAAB's software, even after SAAB was sold by GM. Selling the SAAB corporation was bollixed up until the purchaser's rights in the software were clarified. I don't know the details, but the point is buying a factory, inventory, plans, talent, workforce, etc. are useless if you don't get control/ownership of the software that runs the product.

Check for text wrap on the other objects or alternatively, right click

the text frame and choose text frame options. Enable ignore text wrap.

Thanks IvyLeafLA. My concern is that if I can't find where the pref/default/whatever-their-new-name-is files *are*, then I can't replace them from my TM backup. That's my biggest problem. I've read every reference page I could find or has been mentioned but none of them get me to where *my* prefs/defaults/etc files are hiding, so I'm concerned about using the keyboard command. I don't *think* I've added anything exceptional to my setup but one never really knows. For example, I'd hate to lose all my saved text find/replace items or my printer export options.

I've already deleted the InDesign Defaults file found in Users>username>Library>Preferences>Adobe InDesign>version 8.0>en_US but still had no hyperlinks in the palette. I am getting SO frustrated. Someone on one of my e-mail lists said that Adobe just hates us all and I'm beginning to agree. :>)

I really hate to say it, but the most difficult solutions work. I got my copy of InDesign CC to work just right now by taking the dive and rolling back my font library to what was shipped with Windows 7. I used a font manager to delete all 'aftermarket' fonts and ID seems to be holding steady. I am slowly adding one font family back at a time to see which ones are causing the problem.

I am trying to place a framed photo and a frame text box over a layer. I have done this many times with no problem. Now, only the photo and its frame will overlay. The frame of the text frame displays but not the text. Only a place cursor is visible.

Any new insight here? I just walked through 10 troubleshooting steps with phone support and still no resolve...had to escalate. InDesign CC launches, UI builds in, then about 2 seconds later forces a close.

Yes, it really erks me that they spend so much time and money on pointless, superficial changes (not improvements). Dark background; big deal. Perhaps they should try to keep InDesign from choking on .eps files (their own format!) and other productivity failures before they play with their color charts. That's another discussion...and the problem with monopolies.

I have a CS4-era script stashed away somewhere that counts all words in all stories and spits up a single dialog with the total document word count, but I can't find it anywhere (we only do word counts in applications that our clients use to do word counts, in order to avoid conflicts such as "what is a word in InDesign" versus "what is a word in MS Word.")

DTP Tools makes a plugin that handles this task.

Er, I suppose I meant that no one at Adobe who exercises managerial oversight over both InDesign and Illustrator development teams feels that this particular feature, or that the print dialog in general, must be harmonized to share features across the suite. Some features (e.g. the new dark interface) are getting this kind of standardization attention.

I'm a novice user of Indesign CS6. I've made my away around pretty well, thanks to all of the forums and help guides. However, I'm stumped by one thing. I've downloaded an IND file created by an outside source that I'd like to modify. It's a two sided flier. I've had great luck editing one side, but I cannot find the other side. What am I missing or overlooking?

It seems that they have, in some ways - just not the way that you need.

you should be able to proof-print a section of a large poster in InDesign.

There's that value judgment "should" again. You can, but not without a bit of work:

When I need to do this, I typically place the large-format document into a second, empty, letter-size InDesign document, and then resize the frame to grab just the bit I want to print out. Sometimes I will manually place the same image n times, then resize the frames and use the handy green whatchamacallit smart guides to ensure that all of my preview-frames are the same size. Then I manually move 'em to new pages. If I have to do this for a large number of identically sized posters (say, a H1N1 poster in forty languages) then I will save my proof-template, and then simply print -> relink to the the next poster -> print -> relink to the next poster, until I've printed out proofs for all forty posters.

It's not that your need here is unusual or irrational, but it's clear that the tool in question doesn't have the feature that will automagically do this for you. It's a shame that your thread was derailed into a discussion of, what, product management? But rest assured: yes, the app will do what you need; no, the app will not do it all easily without some manual work.

That's exactly what happened to me last year. I had a new computer and very updated software and I started playing like a kid in a toy shop - I was dragging and pushing everything, each time I opened a project in a new program and that was the first time I had opened CS6 InDesign. I had opened a project from the previous year and then.... uhoh, the hyperlinks had disappeared. I was so happy to have found the post from Pete. It was a lifesaver!

A bit miffed to be honest that the subscription I entered into a few months back is changing its requirements, although not in an obligatory manner. Still, I need to upgrade my mac just to stay up to date on the same Adobe subscription. But that's progress I suppose...

File a formal feature enhancement request as suggested in post #2 above. Without your taking this step, Adobe won't know your needs. Folks on this forum are not "Adobe people," we're users like you.

Sorry. I didn't realize that the suite concept was an accepted fiction within the industry. I thought that the apps had been re-written to make them more unified. There is no reason, however, that they cannot share features within the confined space of the print dialog. As I said, both applications are designed to be capable of printing out large format images, regardless that one is for page layout and one is for illustration. In this way they are similar (which, Willi, is NOT synonomous with saying they are identical) and should share some features that address this use. You should be able to tile in Illustrator, for example, but I don't know if you can or not, and you should be able to proof-print a section of a large poster in InDesign. That is all I'm saying. I don't know why this begat an argument about which application should be used for which project. That is not pertinant to my question.

Savladai... I'm the person who originated this thread. I'm using a fairly new Macbook and the Adobe CS6 products including InDesign CS6. I had problems finding those preferences, too. That is usually the fix for most of these problems - at least in my years of experience.

I had to use the keyboard method and it absolutely worked. If you are worried about losing something, you can always just replace from your tiome machine backup. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Tried that twice. All the other CC apps are pretty slow too. I have a bad feeling I might need a newer Mac to run the latest versions. CS6 works fine.

Hm ok. Well, then I'm back to figuring out why it is that the data merge that I'm tring to work on is only showing the top row of the .csv file and will not list the subsequent rows as they are shown in the screen capture of the actual spreadsheet. Any ideas why the subsequent rows in the ID Data Merged Table below the top one are not showing what's in the .csv and live spreadsheet? The next row down should start off with "utilities, 3...." But instead Its repeating the top row.

Would love to do that, Peter, but there isn't one, as you can see in this screen dump. The ONLY InD file in this folder is at the top of the graphic. I have looked EVERYWHERE in the Library folder that looks even remotely connected to Adobe and/or InD but simply cannot find the prefs. I've replaced every silly little file that I *have* found but none of them get me back the hyperlinks. Believe me, I would LOVE to delete the prefs, since I don't really have that many specialized things set but I simply cannot find them.

Thank you, everyone, for the information on better understanding how text/words are treated/understood by Indesign's 'brain'. This is very interesting, though a little over my head just yet. Great learning avenues though!

I still think that Adobe ought to consider making 'collective word count' command options features available for dullard creative types like me. My particular publication may have several designers working on our layouts for a given issue, so we are page proofing the articles as separate INDD documents before we compile them into a master 'Indesign Book' with the cover jacket to format for printing. It's just nice for an editor with limited software skills to be able to open one of these files and be able to tell at a glance what the word count is, even if the article uses multiple text boxes in its layout. I don't think that is asking too much. #MyTwo

I had the exact same problem today. It was a font in my case. Just open fontbook and disable all of the user fonts. Restart Indesign... if it opens without crashing... bingo you've found the problem. Re-enable the fonts until you find the culprit.

Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

16GB Ram

500GB Hard Drive

Intel Quad Core CPU

When I click the install for InDesign CC the software is slowly downloaded, much slower than any of the other apps. It goes all the way through to Extracting and then it says "Waiting."

It NEVER gets beyond the Waiting stage. I even left it going while I went to bed and came back 7 hours later and it was still waiting and not doing anything. I canceled the operation and tried it again. Samething occurs. I checked Programs and Features to see if there is an old InDesign CS6 or even uninstalled CC version listed but none. I opened up the Adobe Uninstaller to see if InDesign might be listed even though it isn't listed anywhere else and it wasn't there either.

I tried again and still get the same thing, it just stops after extracting and is in "Waiting" mode without ever going further.

I don't have a clue -- I don't use Google apps. Placing a spreadsheet is a far cry form Data Merge, though, and may not do what you want.

Scroll down the page a little further until you see the InDesign folder, then open it and look for your version.

Either there's a problem in the file (and there can be corrupt images, text or frames in an unsaved file) or there's a problem on your system. If you can't export (and it wasn't clear you tried export to .idml), then the best bet is to try moving the pages to a new document, and when that fails, try copy/paste.

I m trying to maintain only the geometricBound[2] (top of the frame) and moving all the 3 sides of the frame towards Bleed..

my simple english style script is..

(trying to keep the Top frame position as it and move all the 3 geometric Bounds towards the Bleed).

How Can i check using if condition that all the 3 frames are to touching Marings, like below. and if so move them towards bleed.Do not move the frame if it is not touching the maring.

None of the steps on the thread above worked. Still crashes. So the last step is saying oh if none of these worked for you then you have to create a new user account if you want to use this product basically? Yet InDesign CS6 works fine on my main user account.

I tried resaving the .csv in text edit as another .csv, but that does not seem to work either. Is importing as an .xlsx file from Google spreadsheet also not viable? I know that you can import a excel file saved directly from excel into ID.

Other users have found that they are unable to use .csv saved from Google Spreadsheets in Data Merge. It's saved as UTF 8 and ID simply can't read it. Resaving in another text editor should fix things.

When adding a master page for a book spine (narrow width, like 6 picas, InDesign always crashes with the ' a serious error was detected' message.

This seems to happen with every document, and also new douments with no content.

Data Merge is VERY unsophisiticated. It puts one record into one frame, and either does one record per page or as many records as will fit. That's it. No customizing, no threading. If you need more sophisitcation you should be looking at XML or a commercial catalog plugin.

I'm on a Macbook Pro, 10.6.8., 2.5ghz Intel Core Duo, 4gb Ram, loads of hard-drive. All my CS6 and CC apps work except for Indesign CC which gives me an "Error: 5"

I have no idea what this means.

I am also experiencing those performance issues. InDesign CC compared to CS6 is way slower. As an example I created a polygon with many sides with the pen tool. I was clicking very fast to create the corner points and in InDesign CC I had to watch how the shape came into being instead of having the points immediately on the screen.

System:

MacBook Pro 17inch

Mac OS 10.8.4

8 GB RAM

2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

The theory of your point is not lost on me, Mike...BUT...your repeated arguement about the apps being a "suite" has no viable fulcrum, in light of the reality:

It's long been admitted, established, and lamented that the Creative Suite apps, unfortunately, were neither conceived nor constructed in suite form, and that the histories of their respective code bases differ so widely, there is very little possibility of "unification" of features and functions. It's best just to avoid that line of thinking. It has no bearing.
