Does Adobe AIR provide an application update mechanism?

Yes. There are a number of APIs that allow developers to update AIR applications. In addition, the Adobe AIR SDK includes an application updater framework in the "frameworks\libs\air" folder that makes it easy to add application update functionality to your application.
