my email address has been hijacked!

Jan 2, 2009 8:09 AM

Lately I get a lot of spam from my own email address. Is my only recourse to create a new email account and do away with the current one?

You're not actually getting email from yourself, the spammer has most likely just spoofed the "from" address.

Not that this has anything at all to do with DW, but this is very a common trick by spammers to get their garbage past spam filters, since most are set to let the user pass through

I receive mail from "myself" at home, and at work with a work email address

I also receive bounced mail where my address has been used as the return by the spammer

There is nothing you can do to stop this type of spam... but you can preview and delete before downloading to your computer from your server (for many types of servers anyway) by installing a product such as Mailwasher http://www.firetrust.com/

It doesn't have access to your contacts. You haven't been "hacked".

There are ways of avoiding this through the use of pictures and Captchas. Unfortunatly, the damage has allready been done. Joey's right, the good news is, your account has (most likely)not been breached. Your email address is simply in the wrong hands now.

Its also likely that they have guessed your email address. They have
programs that harvest domain names and add random names to create the
email addresses. They do the same when sending them too. When I used to
have a catch all address spam was addressed to the most random email
addresses possible. I had to turn off my catch all account as I was
getting hundreds every 10 minutes. I don't recommend using catch all's.
