64-Bit AdobePDF Printer -- Experiemental!!!!

Apr 18, 2007 12:49 PM

Ok, just as a heads up for all you people that are having issues trying to install Acrobat 8 (Pro or Standard) to any system that is running a 64-bit OS and if you got prompts to insert your windows CD:

ADOBE DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THIS METHOD!!! TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

The AdobePDF printer will function if you MANUALLY extract the AdobePDF.dll (the DLL file that is associated to the PDF printer) and place it on your desktop and tell your Setup that is requesting the file to browse and point to the desktop ---

The location of the DLL file is required is within the Data1.cab and it will be named 'AdobePDF.dll_64' (DO NOT USE THE AdobePDF.DLL that is there, that is a 32-bit driver), copy the '64' file to your desktop and rename it to AdobePDF.dll

---------------------
Possible locations of install cab files

Download Version:
Start>Run> %temp% > Acrobat 8 Professional (or standard) > data1.cab

or CD

X:\Acrobat 8 Professional (or standard) > data1.cab

----------------------

After the file has been copied and the setup is complete, you may delete the file off your desktop safely

---

I have tested this method with the following Operating Systems:

Windows XP Pro 64bit
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
---
I have NOT tested it on the following Operating Systems:

Windows Server 2003 (ANY version) 64bit
Windows Vista Business 64bit

-----------
Let me know if it works; also, I only have found this to work only when you have the prompt for the windows cd to be inserted referencing the AdobePDF.dll, so if you want to get this to work, you may have to completely uninstall Acrobat or maybe a possibility to repair the install.

Sorry to say it didn't work for me. The Adobe printer still gives a an error status. Nice try though. Hopefully Adobe has a fix for this on their priority list. It's too expensive and necessary for them to leave it in this state for much longer.

Please Adobe, get a solution I'm stuck without this working!

Anyone else get this to work?

Didn't work for me either. And I was so hopeful! Does anyone know if the CS3 bundle, which lists Vista in its "system requirements" list and includes Acrobat 8, has an Acrobat upgrade? I understand CS3 started shipping in the last day or so.

Anthony, Here's the sequence of events: I uninstalled the trial version of Acrobat 8 Pro and rebooted. Took a CD version of Acrobat 8 Pro that I just purchased and ran a custom install from there (choose everything except foreign language support).

I received 2 errors during the install. One was (and I didn't write it down) that the installer did not have permission to alter a file. I located the file and modified the permissions on the hidden system folder on C:\. I can't locate it now, but will keep looking and report back if I come up with anything.

2nd Error was more familiar where the installer couldn't locate the Adobepdf.dll. I went into the data1.cab on the CD and extracted the Adobepdf.dll_64 file. Placed on the desktop and renamed. Browsed for it in the installer error dialog and everything seemed normal.

    Thanks for helping out,
    Darrin

The error message I get when attempting to print to the Adobe PDF Printer is within the printer dialog. The document reports a status of "Error - Printing". Nothing else, just doesn't produce a pdf and I have to cancel the document (twice) in the que to clear it.

Thanks for working with me through this. It's now getting interesting, with the old first error repeating itself (Vista must be trying to protect itself from a bad user).

Here's what I've done so far in this round...
    Deleted Adobe PDF printer
Extracted AdobePDF.dll_64 from data1.cab and placed on desktop
    renamed to AdobePDF.dll

    Add/Remove Programs
    Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro repair

Error 1310. Error writing to the file: C:\Config.msi\274955c.rbf. Verify that you have access to that directory.

    Explorer
    Tools > View
    Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck Hide Protected Operating system files

    C:\Config.Msi
    Open.. Access Denied
Properties > Security Tab > Continue button
    System... Full Control
    Administrators (Darrin-Notebook\Administrators).. Full Control
Add... Darrin (DARRIN-NOTEBOOK\Darrin)... change to Full Control
    Apply
An Error ocurred while applying security information to C:\Config.Msi\2749e4.rbf.

    Access is denied.
    Change Owner to Darrin(Darrin-Notebook\Darrin).
    Can now open Config.Msi folder
Many .rbf files but cannot locate the file "274955c.rbf"
    There is a 274955a.rbf and a 274955b.rbf
Could not find file in Data1.cab

Went back to installer error 1310 and clicked RETRY
    Installation continued...

    Files Needed
The file 'AdobePDF.dll' on Windows Vista CD-ROM is needed.
BROWSE... to the desktop and selected the renamed AdobePDF.dll file

    Installation continues...
    Installation ends successfully (?)

    Open Printers
    Adobe PDF printer is back
Test print from Notepad file to Adobe PDF printer
Document in Print que, Status > Error - Printing
Cancel > Cancel > Cancel.. print que clears document

Computer > Manage > Services > Printer Spooler
    Status > Started
    Startup Type > Automatic

    The plot thickens.
I wonder where the mystery 274955c.rbf file plays in all this?

    Interesting...
Went back to Windows Explorer and the Config.msi folder is missing. I'm guessing this is created by Adobe during the installation???

    Anthony,

Your instructions worked for me. I can, at least, make PDF's from Office 2003 apps. Although the printer function doesn't work for me.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and am having problems with the PDF printer too. Whenever I try to use it, I get the "Error - Printing" status message. What's stragne is that it's pointing to the LPT1 port. That doesn't seem correct to me.

I went ahead with the suggestion to rename the AdobeDLL.dll_64 driver and use it during the install. However whenever I use the PDF printer I still get the same error message.

My Adobe PDF printer also points to the LPT1 printer port BUT I can de-select that in the printing preferences and I can now "print" from any application without throwing any error.

The only downside is that it doesn't ask to save the PDF first and automatically places the PDF in the 'My Documents' folder. It also replaces any existing PDF with the same name without prompting. Selecting 'Ask to Replace existing PDF file' results in hang and no PDF is created.

I am happy to be able to print to Adobe PDF though despite these limitations.

    Anthony,

I tried your instructions for a complete fresh install using your "The UNIVERSAL VISTA HELP GUIDE FOR INSTALLS AND CONFIGURATION OF ACROBAT 8" found on another thread and still seem to be having difficulty. This time however I didn't receive the "config.msi" error, but did receive the (now) recognizable adobepdf.dll not found error. I installed with the recommended adobepdf.dll_64 file and continued.

Still, the print function didn't work when tried in IE or any other program. Often the document just 'hangs' in the print que and cannot be cleared without a reboot.

I see that others are now saying that their adobe printer is using the printer port LPT1. That's the way mine is showing in the properties, however I am unable to select it without picking something else. I tried "print to file" but that doesn't work either.

Further, I tried deleting the Adobe Printer and did a repair from the control panel, but it comes back with the same port selected.

What port should I expect to see the Adobe Printer to be using?

Acrobat 7 Pro on my XP Pro box uses the port: 'My Documents\*.pdf' with a description of: 'Adobe PDF Port' and the printer is: 'Adobe PDF'.

I would expect version 8 to be similar.

    Jacqui,

Thanks for the check. Unfortunately something must be going wrong on my install because I don't have anything like that on Vista x64 with Acrobat 8 pro.

These are my available printer ports:

    LPT1 "Adobe Printer"
    LPT2,3
    COM1,2,3,4
    FILE, "Print to File"
    USB "Virtual printer port"
XPS "Local Port", MS XPS Document Writer".

And if I remember correctly, there use to be right-click options to convert files to PDF and TIFF files that are missing from inside windows explorer. But, I'd be happy at this point just to get the adobe print function to work inside internet explorer and firefox.

    Darrin,

Have you tried right clicking on the printing preferences on the Adobe PDF printer? On the third tab there is a field: 'Adobe PDF Folder' which points to LPT1. That field needs to be blank. Since doing that I am able to print from Firefox, IE and any other application.

From what I recall, I managed to get that field blank by temporarily changing the Adobe PDF port to another port by checking another virtual port. You could try the XPS port for instance. Then return the port to the LPT1 port. For some reason the 'Adobe PDF Folder' remains blank, resulting in the ability to print from any application without hang.

    Jacqui,

That's new. Okay, within the Adobe PDF Printer Pref, 3rd Tab, Adobe PDF Folder, mine is already showing as blank but the pull-down for it shows LPT1 as a choice.

Switching it to LPT1 > print a test page > fails
    Switching the port to XPS
    Apply and then
Switching back to the lpt1 port
Adobe PDF printer prefs > adobe pdf folder is now on LPT1 (not blanked) and the pull-down doesn't offer anything else.
Test print causes print error in the que.
2 cancels and it clears from the que.

Maybe I'll try later to delete the Adobe printer and repair it to see if it comes back

    The investigation continues...

I have just been playing around with my settings and after changing the port of the Adobe PDF printer to the 'CPW2:' port I am not only able to print but it also prompts for a file name and destination for the produced PDF. The resulting PDF file is made by Acrobat Distiller 8 etc.

It doesn't seem to matter to Acrobat that the port used is for another PDF creator altogether. I practically have this thing functioning perfectly now :-)

I got the 'CPW2:' port from installing the free version of CutePDF creator for 64-bit apps.

I have WinXP 64, I too followed the abobe steps: copied the 64 dll file, renamed it. I'm getting printer errors when trying to convert a spread sheet document in Excel to PDF. I tried removing the printer driver and doing a repair but now I'm getting failed to write pdf file errors. Any good solution to this whole Win64 / Acrobat issue?

After fighting for over 2 months with the installation of Acrobat Pro 8 on Vista 64x and getting nothing but printer errors, I followed the advise of some people here and started using the free CutePDF writer printer to fill in for the broken Adobe PDF Printer.

While CutePDF has stepped up their 64x support, I have to wonder why Adobe is dropping the ball on the product that made them such a big name. If I had known that they were going to be dragging on forever about 64x support I never would of purchased Acrobat Pro.

Well, Adobe has my $$$ now and I will either continue to use the Frankenstein mash of CutePDF writer with Acrobat Pro... or give up on Acrobat and move on to CutePDF Pro, where I would feel they have earned my $$$ (and a lot less at that!), my loyalty and my recommendations.

Very disappointed with Adobe with this release. Can't say I recommend them anytime soon when there are more responsive vendors out in the market willing to step up and help their user-base.

And just how long does Adobe expect it's users to wait? Just a time schedule for a possible fix would of been nice.

Guess I'll wait a little longer to see if Adobe fixes the broken 64x print drivers, but at least CutePDF has come to the rescue.

Yeah, I share your pain. Adobe has really dropped the ball in a lot of ways. Don't forget no Linux support for Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. I still can't believe there's no 64bit support for Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects either.

I have tried installing the printer driver to use Acrobat 8 in Vista 64 bit in every possible way to no avail. A very nice tech told me to create a post-script printer to print the document to a file, and then use Acrobat Distiller to print the file to Adobe:

Go to Control Panel and Printers, and Add a printer.
Add a Local Printer and use the File:Print to File Port.
You can use any printer driver as long as it says it is color and has PS in it.
When you print with it, it will ask you to save the file, which will be a .prn file. Then, you open Distiller and open the .prn file. (You will have to tell Distiller to look for "All Files.") It will then produce a PDF that you can open and save.

The .prn files can be hard to find, though. Quickbooks saved it in my QuickBooks program directory, Explorer saved it on my Desktop, and Word saved it in Documents. If you search for a .prn in Vista, you have to use an advanced search and check the box for non-indexed, hidden and system files.

    Good luck!

Actually, you don't have to dig out the file. When you get the browse option, it will point to an i386 folder. Go up one level and you will see that there is also an AMD64 folder. You can go there and select the file and the install will proceede

After months of frustration, I finally got Acrobat Pro 8 and 64-bit Vista working together. Thanks to all who provided suggestions.

    Here's what worked:

I followed suggestions above to rename the AdobeDLL.dll_64 driver and used it during the install.

Control Panel >> Printers >> Adobe PDF >> Ports >> select XPSPort

Control Panel >> Printers >> Adobe PDF >> Properties (Right-click) >> Advanced >> Printer Defaults >> Adobe PDF Conversion Settings (3rd tab) >> Adobe PDF Folder >> set to XPSPort

Now, when I print using the AdobePDF printer, the document opens as a PDF in Acrobat 8 and I can then save it where I wish.

OK, great. The 8.1 (and now 8.1.1) patch brings full support for Adobe Acrobat 8 under 64-bit Windows Vista. *But* this patch only installs on systems where Acrobat 8.0 is already installed.

My problem here is that I need to deploy Acrobat to clean systems. And when I do a silent installation, it crashes because of this ADOBEPDF.DLL which is not found. I will *not* install Acrobat manually on several dozens of machines during the final deployment. There has to be another way.

I have tried "slipstreaming" the 8.1 and 8.1.1 patches into the main install, to no avail so far. I have tried customizing the .msi with a .mst transform file, into which I added the 64-bit ADOBEPDF.DLL in the I386 location: no success.

And strangely enough, I could not find people having this problem on the Internet and looking for a solution. Am I the only one trying to deploy Acrobat 8 on 64-bit Windows Vista?

Here is an update to my own post from last week.

I found a way to work around the ADOBEPDF.DLL problem. The idea is simply to pre-copy it before installing Acrobat 8.0 (this is only valid for 64-bit installations).

I copy the file from "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AMD64\ADOBEPDF.DLL" from an already installed computer. Then, just before installing Acrobat 8.0, I have a batch file that pre-copies this file to "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\I386\ADOBEPDF.DLL". With this trick, installation is able to find the file and does not crash like it used to...

On the issue of "slipstreaming" the 8.1 and 8.1.1 patches into the main install, I have not found any way other than installing them separately.

Here is the complete sequence I follow when pushing Acrobat 8 to a newly deployed computer:
    1) pre-copy ADOBEPDF.DLL to the I386 directory
    2) do a silent install of Adobe Acrobat 8.0.0
    3) do a silent install of 8.1.0 update
    4) restart the computer
    5) do a silent install of 8.1.1 update

I have tried to completely suppress the restarts (option /rs in setup.ini and option /norestart for msiexec for the updates). This led to mysterious crashes of Acrobat after installation. The only way I found to be working was to allow this one restart between the updates.

I hope this might help someone else...

Thanks Alexandre L and all that have contributed.

I've made all the steps that you have pointed. Acrobat works well, except the PDF IE TOOLBAR. I click on the top-left button in IE7, but nothing happens. The same with it's menu items. I've installed, uninstalled and reinstalled...., but allways the same.
The pdf printer works well in the archive menu (Archive-->print). But not with the pdf ie7 toolbar (think AcroIEFavclient.dll). The button is "active", but nothing happens when you click it.

I have Vista x64 Ultimate spanish.

    Thanks!!

    Hey Anthony.
Just followed your instructions to install Adobe 8 Pro to my new Tx2000 HP Entertainment Tablet unning Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Thanks for this tip - no other info on the web and now with Adobe charging for support - I was desperate. So far so good. Cross your fingers that this will be my last post on the subject!

P.S. Anyone have conflicts between HP printer software and Adobe Updates? Everytime my adobe Reader or Acrobat updates I lose my scan capability on my HP All-in-One 7310. I finally had to turn off the update feature in Adobe :( because I had to reinstall printer everytime it updated!

    Cheers!

Cindy I'm not sure you have the same issues as the other exactly. have yo tried installing 8.0 then manually updating to 8.1 (8.1.1 8.1.2).

    You can find the updates to download here;

    Software:
Adobe Acrobat Professional and Standard 8.0

    ISSUE:
In Microsoft Vista, PDF Printing Error and/or Application Hang in IE7 and Office Applications

    BACKGROUND:
When printing from IE7 or Office 2000/2003/2007 with Adobe Printer, Adobe Button, Convert to Adobe PDF (Right Click Option), etc. there is no response, printer queue shows error, both Office and Adobe process hangs.

    Solution:
Note: Make sure you set aside approximately 2 to 3 hours but should take no more than 1.5 hours depending on how quickly your PC or laptop shuts down and reboots.

    1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
    2. Locate "Find Product Updates"
    3. Select option "Acrobat - Windows"
    3. Click on "Go" button
    4. Install the following updates. A restart / reboot will be required for most of these patches / updates:

Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Professional and Standard update - English, French, German, and Japanese 36.2MB 6/5/2007

Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Professional and Standard update - multiple languages 36.8MB 6/14/2007

Adobe Acrobat 8 licensing service update (Windows Vista only) 486KB 10/1/2007

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1 Professional and Standard update - multiple languages 10.9MB 10/22/2007

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Professional and Standard update - multiple languages 19.9MB 2/6/2008

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Professional and Standard Security Update 1- multiple languages 2.1MB 6/23/2008

    5. Verify applied changes:

5a. Go to "Printers" via Control Panel and Classic View otherwise use your favorite way to get there.

5b. Right Click "Adobe PDF" in "Printers" screen.

    5c. Select "Printing Preferences"

5d. In the "Adobe PDF Settings" Tab you should no longer have "LPT:", instead you should now have "Prompt for Adobe PDF filename" and "Documents\*.pdf

    5e. Close all the screens

    6. Test printing in IE7 and your Office applications

    7. If you still experience issues:

    7a. Uninstall Adobe Acrobat 8.0

    7b. Re-install Adobe Acrobat 8.0

7c. Perform Step 4 installation of updates.

    Regards.

Id like to add this to the knowledgebase. I had a similar problem when installing Acrobat Pro v8 on a fresh installation of Windows XP SP3. Quite some time ago, I started with Acrobat 4.0, upgraded, to 5.01, upgraded to 6.0, then last year or so upgraded to v8.0.

Based on that history, and some hints from PETER AGUINALDO (above), I guessed that my problem originated with messages Id seen when installing Acrobat 4. It wouldnt let me proceed unless I had already installed a Postscript printer.

So, I uninstalled v8, and installed a Post-Script printer. I chose somewhat randomly an HP Color Laser 4550 PS, on port FILE. I dont actually have this printer, but I just needed the Postscript to be installed.

After that I re-installed v8 and, surprise, problem solved, there was a correct printer port assignment, even before running any of the v8 updates.

After PERUSING the adobe forums for a fix, I finally found it... at the Quickbooks PRO site! It took about 5 minutes!!!

    http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/knowledgebasearticl e/1007856

Basically it steps you through the process of reassigning the Adobe PDF printer port away from LPT1 to a new (you create it) local PDF port.

I had given up on Adobe Acrobat working on my Vista x64 until I stumbled upon this to fix my Quickbooks Pro and though it may work for my Adobe troubles (the quickbooks support page also has steps for XP 64 bit).

I hope this finally brings peace for others!

Maybe Adobe should replace some of their QA engineers with Intuit engineers????

I clicked Add printer/Local Port/ ... and chose my own name Adobe PDF. I changed my preferences for standard (I have other versions for various print applications) and saved.

Now I can print easily from CS3 applications / File/print to PDF and I choose setup to select my installed job options. I added my old job options via Distiller.
