Hi

I have a preprinted form that I had scanned and saved in .PDF format. I have added form fields to this form. I want people to fill in the field in Adobe Reader and have the form visible in screen but invisible when printed. In other words, I want only the data printed in my preprinted form.

Good Day Paul, I have a similar problem to Diana Pouppirt,

However, I use CenopDf to create fillable PDF forms. Wherecna I download LiveCycle? Is it an add on product to Acrobat or a different program all together?

My Scenario:
I create the fillable forms then post it on our web site (it is a registration form I created). The customers complete the form online on the website then either print the fill out or fill online then print then fax it back to the HR department. Is there anyway for the online filled-out PDF form to be emailed to the HR department with the filled-in information? Since the customer is filling out the form, how can I have that form emailed back to our HR department without having the customer print out that form?
If you feel your code can work for me then please send it to me.

Livecycle is a server based product separate from Acrobat. A trial version can be downloaded for the Devnet site.

Reader provides you limited functionality (viewing the PDF, printing the file etc). It is similar functionality to what is in your browser when viewing a web page. You can enhance the functionality of Reader on a form by form basis by Reader Extending the form. A subset of Reader Extensions exists in Acrobat (locally saving and Digitial Signatures) but the full Reader Extensions functionality can only be applied by LiveCycle Server (things like commenting, Database and web service access, etc..).

Emailing the form is standard browser functionality and Reader Extensions is not required for this action. So if all you want to do is email the file back to an email address no additional product is nneded. You may have to write a script to contol the email but that is all.

I am using adobe livecycle designer 8.0
I created a form that is to be completed and emailed to me. I need the fields to be locked as read only once the form has been returned to me. I cannot figure out how to do this. I have seen the xdp script posted elsewhere but when I inserted this script into the mousedown field it did not work.

PLEASE HELP.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry, but I probably have completely misinterpreted what is going on here. I wish to have a fillable and savable form which I can fill out, but then save it as a static (nonfillable) PDF file. I know I can do this by printing the filled form to the Adobe PDF printer driver, but here is how I tried to use your example:

I used Acrobat Pro to activate the extended Reader features.

1. I filled out the form.
2. I locked the fields.
3. I saved the form.

When I reopened the form in Reader, the data entered above was there, but the form was still fillable. At this point, I would want the form to be unalterable. Where am I going wrong?

My script will simply lock all fields when it is executed. What target version are you setting this for. There is a parameter in the Form Properties that controls whether to save the state of the form when it is saved. Under File/Form Properties/Defaults make sure the "Preserve scripting changes to form when saved" is set to Automatic. That woudl only work in version 8 and better.

OR

You could control the state of the form yourself. You could have it set up to run my script when the form is opened. If there is data in a field then lock all fields on initialization otherwise leave it all open.

PS, I am creating pdf templates that allow the end user to type in text and add images to the pdf. Currently, using livecycle designer es, once the user opens our pdf, enters ther text and images, they can only print it. The save option will only save a blank copy.

I would like for the end user to be able to save the fields (text & images) but also be able to revise them later. Is this possible with a script like yours (perhaps a script that allows them to lock then unlock the fields?)

The locking and unlocking has nothing to do with it. The reason why they can only save a blank template is because they are using Reader. Reader does not allow that functionality by default. You can Reader Extend your document to allow the file to be saved (for that document only). To do this you can open th eform in Acrobat then under the Advanced menu choose "Extend Features in Acrobat Reader". This will add the Reader Extensions rights that will allow a local save and digital signatures (not needed for your example). Note that the license agreement for this technique will limit you to distribute the form to a maximum of 500 users. If you need more than that then you must use LiveCycle Reader Extensions server to add the rights to your document.

Hi Paul,

Ok, now I understand. I downloaded the trial version of acrobat, then followed your instructions of clicking advanced then 'extend features in reader' and it worked like a charm. This is exactly what I was looking for.

As for the license agreement of 500 copies, is that managed through an online system by adobe or how do they track that? I am still going to honor the agreement of course. Do you know where the details on this agreement is found?

paul, i have a form that i made for our office. it is a request for information. i want to have all my employees fill out the form and send it to the contractor. i want all fields to be locked except the field where they can post answeres and they are able to open the attachments that are sent on the form. I also want to make sure the contractor can copy from our form to past the questions on their own form. is this possible

Yes .....I will send you a smaple that locks all fields. You can do a further test that will unlock the specific fields that you want to leave open. The contractor will have to use the Select tool in Acrobat/Reader to copy and paste the bits that they want.
