Nikon D700 NEF support

Hi,

any news about D700 NEF support? When will it happen?
Got a test cam and can't use NEFs in LR.

Thx, regards,
Mat

Yes you can - just turn them into dngs. I think!

Lr v1.x apparently wasn't elegible for the most recent Olympus dCam (E-520), so imagine Lr v2 will be the target for D700 NEF support as well. The D700 is new enough I wonder if it is currently supported by the current DNG converter, which was only just released.

I might question why you'd use 3rd party software to evaluate a new camera(?) Wouldn't it be better to trust Nikon to develop its own raw data from this new sensor? And then, and only then, to believe Adobe would deliver its excellent development tools in good time(?)

Exactly, if you want to see just what your camera does. use NX2 (presuming it will read the proprietary format of a D700--or would that require an upgrade to it? Hmmmm) and then compare the results with LR2 when it ships.

I'm shooting D200s and 300s now, but will be picking up a D700 as soon as the review dust settles and the price drops after the first 90 days or so.My experience has been that NX produces the best conversions of NEFs of anything out there--but until NX2 came out, it was so clunky and slow that I only used it on about 2-4 percent of my work. Now I am up to about 10% and climbing, as I establish a new workflow to accommodate it.

One thing NX does do, however slow, is first rate conversions and editing of NEFS. And the feature set of NX2 with its improved workspace choice is in my opinion better than LR2 beta (which is not fully fleshed out yet)--that is, if compare NX2 to the LR2 Develop module, NX2 is non destructive as well, given that you can save work back to NEF and open and change edits any number of times before using the file as a tif or jpeg.

Yes, you can achieve close to NX results with LR, but to do so can sometimes make for slow workflow as well. I will be interested to see how LR2 does myself--hopefully in a month or so :)

    >Getting Oly E520 on Wednesday, so that won't work either in LR1..

Download the release candidate of DNG Converter 4.5 and convert the files to DNG, Lr 1.4.1 and Lr2.0 will then be able to edit E520 files.

    Edit:

DNG and ACR 4.5RC do support the Nikon D700.

    Re: Nikon D700 NEF support
    Dear All,

I have also had problems with the D700 NEF files but have now worked out how to open them in lightroom/CS3.

Use the supplied Nikon NX2 software to download the images from your camera. Use 'Save as' to save them to a folder on your computer as NEF files. Then select all the images in the folder and right click to view the 'Properties'. In properties there should be 3 tabs - one of which is details. You should them be able to change the 'Camera model' from D700 to D3. Press OK to apply the changed property. Then open Lightroom and import the images as you usually would.

Note that if you do not get the 'details' tab in the image properties then you will probably need to download the nikon software that allows D700 NEF files to be viewed in Windows - this is available here: http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/index.html.en

There are some other postings on the web about installing a program to do this change automatically but it was too complicated for me - if someone could provide step by step instructions I'd be very grateful!

    I hope this helps!

You can go to Adobe Camera Raw 4.5 Release Version, which has unofficial support for the Nikon D700. Unofficial, means it is probably fine, but it hasn't been through rigorous QA yet.

    Hi,

you can work with nefs from the D700 if you change the model from MODEL D700 to MODEL D3 in the exifdata.
Than you can use the files with ACR, Lightroom and CS3.

Get the exiftool made by Phil Harvey and on the console (CMD)
    type in:
    path where your picture are...

    d:\mypics\>exiftool -model="NIKON D3" *.nef
than you can change pics from nef to dng.

    Another way is,
    renname the exiftool.exe to exiftool(-model='NIKON D3').exe
and than in the MS-Explorer select all nef's and drag them on the new exitftool. Then it will due the same job as above.

I have got my D700 on friday and did the expirence ad the weekend.

You don't need to do that with LR 2.0.

I have downloaded both Camera Raw 4.5 and the latest DNG converter on my MAC and neither will recognize my D700 NEF files. Is there some magic to get them to work?

    Thanks,
    Jerry

D700 NEF files work in Lightroom 2 (release version) and also Camera Raw 4.5 (release version).

You may not have installed it properly the path is:

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats/

Replace the plugin in that folder and restart Photoshop.

Jerry, when you run the DNG Converter, there is an "About DNG Converter..." button in the lower-left corner of the dialog box. Click it. At the top of the splash screen there is a "version string" as a sequence of numbers. What are those numbers?

Let's turn this question around in the days of film. Why use third party lab to develop your film? Wouldn't it be better to trust Fuji or Kodak to develop its own image from this film?

The answer to this is that there were many pro labs kept in business by their clients concerns.

If there were no doubt about that -- people wouldn't be turning to Aperture or Lightroom. NC, NX (and I'm assuming NX2 as well) does a really good job of following a recipe and baking a cake. However where it's weakest is that it lacks the precision controls needed to override the standard recipe. I would argue that makes it better for troubling cases, not necessarily so good for others.

The NC/NX family is simply another tool in the digital toolbox. Using "Best" to describe it is really pushing the meaning of that term. JMO.

    Please help!!
I have a Nikon d700 and MacBook running Leopard 10.5.4, and am unable to see NEF thumbnails in folders. I can open NEF's in CS3 without a problem, but I need to be able to see the thumbnails when look into folders.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you very much

apple (up to 10.5.5) has not adapted D700 NEF's yet
so you will only see them in apps like NX2 or LR2

    Re: Nikon D700 NEF support
Apple released RAW support for the D700 late yesterday via software update as well as support for a few other cameras. You can get the camera raw update via the Mac's software update feature in the finder.

    Cheers!

p.s. this was a separate update, not included with the OS update.
