It's been almost all France since the half but they STILL haven't put it together. The old men have run Italy into the ground, if they don't come away with it it will be a shame but they'll have no one to blame but themselves.

    Holy carp!

Zidane deservedly gone on a headbutt in second overtime in the WC final!

Unbelievable! Stupidest end to a career ever!

Boy, France sure could have used Zidane for the PKs. Too bad he ended his career by making an *** of himself.

Incredible. In front of 69,000 people. And this is not some volatile 18-year-old.

Wow. Wow. I've really tried to understand the global attraction of this game. Sorry. Anything that ends in a "shootout" to determine the "World Cup" winner is not a good thing. Although I was for Italy they sucked in the second half and overtime. The better team lost. ( :-( ) Zidane in one of the most important game in his life acted like... whatever.

This game did nothing to swing us US observer (in my pub anyway) over to FOOTBALL. Sorry, but call me in four years. :-)

Why can't they play till they drop... something like shopping?

I suppose something has to break the deadlock. One weird thing I didn't know about - if it's still level after 5 penalties each they go on to sudden death (I knew that bit) - but in case it goes on, and on, and on, one team was down to ten men, so Italy had to nominate one person who couldn't take a penalty, so they'd be level on that.

I'm sure we've all felt like it! Word is the other guy had called him a terrorist (he's Algerian and a non-practising Muslim). Pity he had to make the guy's point for him.

Never could figure out how you vote for an MVP or Outstanding Player, before the game is over. But then again, that's the media. :-(

    Only 35 vote spread.

    >Disgraced Zidane wins World Cup Golden Ball

    >BERLIN, July 10 (Reuters) - France captain Zinedine Zidane won the FIFA Golden Ball award as the outstanding player of the World Cup despite being sent off in their final penalties shootout defeat by Italy on Sunday.

    >The prize was decided by media votes, cast before Zidane was shown the red card. Zidane received 2,012, Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro finished second (1,977) and his team mate Andrea Pirlo was third (715).

Yes, yes, but what was the coffee like? Did the people have very bad teeth? Were the women ugly?

Seriously Roger, I'm glad you had such a great time. Did you take a lot of photos?

    > > this was the best feeling in Germany for over 50 years

Excellent! That's what I like to here. And may they never repeal the Pure Beer Act!

"It was enacted by Bavarian Duke William IV in 1516 and stipulates that beer may only be brewed using barley, hops and water.Yeast was unknown at the time brewers relied upon yeast cells present in the air.The German Purity Law is still the most important rule concerning brewing in Germany. Only malt, hops, yeast and water may be used for the production of beer."

You did bring us all some samples?

Praiseworthy though it is John, the Reinheitsgebot (or purity law) is not universally mandatory throughout Germany.

    > > They sold American "Bud" at the stadiums due to a sponsorship deal that could probably have funded the entire German national budget, I'm guessing, since Germany is famous for good beer and Budweiser is famous for lousy beer and mega-advertising

And Budweiser had to to go to court to prove Budweiser was beer - because it's brewed from rice. Sadly they won.

Elsewhere in this thread is references to Dutch fans being stripped of their teams colours before they entered the stadium because they wearing logos of a rival beer. Unbelievable.

Meanwhile, the 2006/07 European Cup (QR1) got under way tonight.

    Best result of the night:

    ] Birkirkara FC 0-3 B36 Tórshavn
Faroe Islands champion B36 have one foot in the second round after a convincing 3-0 victory away to Maltese premiers Birkirkara.

] The first half belonged to Amed Davy Sylla as he opened the scoring in the 14th minute to give the Nordic side the lead, and Sylla again struck just after the half-hour to make it 2-0.

] It looked like 2-0 would be the full-time score until Hanus Thorleifsson added a third for the visitors at the death, likely setting up a nice second-round tie against Fenerbahçe.

Well, the sparks continue to fly.

    >MILAN, Italy (AP) - FIFA president Sepp Blatter says French star Zinedine Zidane could be stripped of his Golden Ball award for the best player at the World Cup due to violent conduct.

    >"The winner of the award is not decided by FIFA, but by an international commission of journalists," Blatter said in Wednesday's La Repubblica. "That said, FIFA's executive committee has the right, and the duty, to intervene when faced with behaviour contrary to the ethic of the sport."

The Champions of Wales are in trouble already

] MyPa 1 - 0 The New Saints (aka TNS)
Myllykoskenpallo-47, better known as MyPa, claimed a narrow home victory over League of Wales champions The New Saints FC on Wednesday.

] A goal two minutes before the hour mark slid in by Brazilian forward Adriano lifted the Finnish domestic champions to the victory ahead of next week's second leg tie at Latham Park in Newtown.

] The winner of the tie will play in the second qualifying round against FC København of Denmark.
