    The British Press, according to Jim Hacker, Sir Humphrey and Bernard:

    Jim Hacker: "Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers:
    - The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country;
    - The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country;
    - The Times is read by people who actually do run the country;
    - The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country;
    - The Financial Times is read by people who own the country;
    - The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country;
    - And the Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is."

    Sir Humphrey: "Prime Minister, what about the people who read the Sun?"

    Bernard Woolley: "Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits."

    > > The hype over Beckham's debut was nausiating.

    Sure was. I saw some of it on TV, and the shrieking women hurt my ears. Becks was interviewed afterwards and said he was embarrassed

    From Saturday's Liverpool Echo:

    ] Gabriel Heinze: See you in court, Fergie
    Jul 20 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

    ] GABRIEL HEINZE will take his battle to join Liverpool from Manchester United to court.

    ] Sir Alex Ferguson stated yesterday there was no way he would sell the 29-year-old to Liverpool.

    ] However, United will have no choice if Heinze has a get-out clause, and now the defender is preparing to begin legal proceedings demanding his sale.

    ] Its been widely publicised in recent days Heinze has a letter signed by United chief executive David Gill allowing him to join any club which bids £6m a valuation Liverpool are prepared to meet.

    ] Despite their protests, its understood United did not have the foresight to add the phrase except for Liverpool in this document.

    ] Heinzes representatives are confident of a swift court hearing forcing United to accept a £6m offer made by all interested clubs, including Liverpool.

    ] The Anfield club made a formal bid for the defender which was rejected, but will now take a back seat and watch developments closely over the next few weeks.

    ] Manager Rafa Benitez will want a new left back in his squad before the start of the season.

    ] The capture of Heinze would represent a major coup for Benitez and, given Fergusons opposition to the move, would also inflict psychological torment on the United boss.

    ] Whats clear is no matter how much Ferguson claims it wont happen, the final decision is out of his hands.

    I take that to mean Heinze has fallen out with Fergie and Heinze will be at Anfield very soon!

    Seriously, David Beckham: Do you actually play soccer?

    The hype surrounding your decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy for a whopping $250 million has been more closely examined than the fate of Harry Potter or Hillary Clintons cleavage.

    Youve been on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Youve drawn crowds of hysterical fans that would make the Pope blush. For crying out loud, theres an entire reality-TV show about you and your wife moving to the United States.

    I was at the All-Star game, and it was incredible to see the buzz that went through the stadium when he went to do an interview, said Peter Vermes, the Wizards technical director. People were running out of their seats to get a look, just running to see him. Ive seen a lot of things before, but not that.

    Theres just one problem, David.

    Youve barely touched a soccer ball since setting down on American soil.

    Now youve missed three straight games because of an ankle injury, not even making the trip to Dallas for a SuperLiga game on Tuesday, putting your Major League Soccer debut in question.

    All of these delays, of course, havent stopped fans from anointing you the Next Big Thing the guy whos supposed to push soccer, finally, into the top tier of American sports.

    They're good, and Liverpool have several new players. But LFC will win.

    I can't refrain from saying, but I knew this would happen.

    The US bought an image, a brand; someone who WAS good.

    Listen up. Reread my posts and it's a GREAT game for the kids 5 thru 17 and after that it's a failure 'here'. (With a few exceptions.) :-)

    There is never anyone in the seats... (With a few exceptions.) :-)

    We're beating the

    thread by ten posts at the moment.

    That's got to mean we're more passionate about our national sport on this little island than they are in the states!

    > > some of us fly to Liverpool to catch big matches

    I still can't believe that!! You're my hero.

    Although the US has laid out a fortune to stage the World cup and bring many top players in their twilight years, I can't see US footy displacing baseball, basketball and US football from their top spots.

    But I admire those who persist in backing the game.

    Meanwhile, it's LFC V FEYENOORD at 19:00 Sun 05th August in the totally unheard of "Port of Rotterdam" Tournament

    PS. It took Torres 12 minutes to score his first goal for Liverpool on Friday. I like that!

    PPS. Unofficial leak. It's Len's birth today (Sunday).

    There is always exceptions to the rule. Especially in Rogers house.

    I'm sure there's some lovely people in Texas. Sadly I never met any of them in RedNeck Village.

    One kind person did offer me a gun rack for the pickup, but I told that not being from Manchester, I didn't do guns. This clearly confused him

    Since the EU is invading America with an (over the hill) Beckham, it's only fair that the US invade them back. 18 year old prodigy Freddy Adu made his debut with Benfica.

    I got to watch him (and Beckham) when DC United played Real Madrid at Seahawks stadium. He is very very very fast, I suspect he will end up being great.

    He's really really talented. How good he can be, we'll see. But it's exciting that such a young MLS player is going over there.

    Hi!<br /><br />I've been on holiday in the far north of Scotland, and not had much chance to do much else.  I did get to see the matches on the telly though.<br /><br /><b>Toulouse 0-1 LFC.</b><br />Not a particularly outstanding match but no goals conceded and an away goal are just what was needed.<br /><br /><b>LFC 1-1 Chelsea.</b><br />A win for Liverpool was cruelly denied by an outrageous decision by the referee to award Chelsea a penalty.  The fact that the referee has been suspended from duty and the head referee has apologised to Liverpool for the gross error does not alter the result.  Chelsea go top of the league.<br /><br /><b>LFC 4-0 Toulouse.</b><br />Because of being on holiday and others working and/or on holiday, we had no tickets!  So we've watched it on the box.  The result was never in doubt, and LFC should have scored at least 4 or 5 more.  <br />It was the first time since 1997 that neither Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher had featured in a European tie for the Reds. and considering several players were making their début, it bodes well for the season.<br /><br />The draw for the Champs League is on Thursday, noon CET which I think is 2a.m. Alaska time.<br /><br />I'm working on some photos from my hols, but how's this for starters?<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Wrath"><img src="http://bigjohnd.250free.com/Scotland2007/CapeWrath.jpg" ALT="John at Cape Wrath, the remotest part of mainland GB."
