While I agree in principle with what you've said, there is a difference. Sometimes you can't satisfy yourself creatively when doing something for a client. Since most of graphic design is done for profit rather than artistic merit, the ability to create a functional product is paramount over artistic needs.

A logo is the perfect example. A logo must be versatile enough to work on whatever a client may decide to put it on. That is a fact. You can satisfy your creative needs all you want, but the bottom line is if the logo you design doesn't work for the client, the logo doesn't work.

There's a lot of creativity to be applied in all areas of graphic design. But there are also limitations when doing anything that qualifies as work-for-hire.

A photographer will tell you the same thing. If you're taking photos for your own personal artistic and creative expression, then please, by all means blow the doors off of conformity. But if you're taking photos for a client, ultimately, you had better deliver a product that works for the client, not you.

It all depends on the application and the purpose. The "rules" as you'd like to call them aren't really rules, but rather are important elements to take into consideration when creating a logo. They don't have to limit your creativity in any way, but rather get you to think about the purpose, intent and all the different possible applications of the end product. If you put these considerations into effect when you begin your creative processes, you'll be better able to not only be creative, but create an end product that works. And in graphic design, having an end product that works for the client is all that really matters.
