Heh, I was wondering whether there was a running thread on books, and here it is. Hi Margaret! Thanks for starting it all those years ago! Hope all goes well too! Have you returned with some book recommendations?

I've got to page 20 of "Only Say the Word" (Niall Williams) and would already strongly recommend it. (Hope it doesn't go downhill from there, but his prose is so poetic that he couldn't write a bad book if he tried).

Hey Peter, this thread has been here since the lounge started, is there any chance we can keep just this one going past the thousand limit?

    I'm guessing here.

It may be easier to stop it disappearing by preventing it exceeding the 1000 limit. A new version would be started but the old one would remain for perpetuity (or even longer!).

    >The Firefox book series tells one a lot of survival.

    Nice seguay into this:

I just finished a book titled "Little Chapel on the River." It is about a small general store and pub named Guinan's in Garrison, NY, which is about 5 miles down the road from where I live. It is a beautiful story, brilliantly written. My family has been friends with the Guinans since before I was born. I know the characters in this book. I drank with them in Guinan's, and Ms. Bounds has nailed it perfectly. In this book, you will learn a bout life in my neck of the woods, and why I consider myself fortunate to have been born here, and why I can never truly leave. Once you start it, you will not want to put it down. Ms. Bounds has created a masterpiece. Thank you, Wendy! Read about the book, and some reviews Here

You will love this book. I guarantee it!

Reading "London" right now. Basically, he writes the same chapter over and over with the next generation taking the place of the previous one.

    >I really liked reading "London.

Maybe the many years of self abuse has done something to my attention span. I read the first half of the book straight through. Then I read another book or two, read some more "London", another couple of books, etc. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. Maybe it's just too damn long.

I've been reading Henning Mankells books. Swedish mystery writer. I thought England had crappy weather - I think the sun came out 4 times in 7 books! But I like reading his stuff. Mysteries are my junk food: Ian Rankin, Mankell, Peter Robinson, Val McDermid, William Tapply are a few writers who come to mind. Better than watching reruns. I even liked the Dick Francis stuff even though the only thing that changes from book to book is the horse.

Just finished the third book in Melvyn Bragg's trilogy: Crossing the Line. First two were: A Soldier's Return and Son of War. Great reading.

We're trying mot to post here, 1000 posts and the thread dies, it's been here since a few weeks after the lounge started, we're trying to get a heritage order on it so it can't be torn down.
