Hiya, just want to say thanks-I had tried everything under the sun to fix this, albeit in Photoshop Elements 6, which came preinstalled on my Vaio and it was one heck of a hassle to reinstall it and it didn't help at all...disabling font preview FIXED it. I have no idea which font could be broken as this comp only has Word and PSE that installed any fonts, contrary to my other comp with proper PS (7) and 2,000 fonts from various sources...

I'm also to the point where I can't even run ANYTHING in PS3 because it starts up with the font too active, so when I even try to get OUT of the font tool, it freezes. I hope I can even make these suggested changes. Thanks, all.
im actually using photoshop cs4 and encountered the same problem, but i found a solution. it was a font, in my case, the "Gas" font. i had to uninstall them all and install them in groups to narrow it down, until finally i had it down to 6 fonts and just went one by one. im sure there are other fonts out there that are either unsupported or corrupt, so check those fonts. im sure this applies to cs3 as well, although i didnt encounter the same problem in cs3.
I'm using Photoshop Elements 6 on a Mac (OS 10.5) and had the same problem. Thanks to your suggestions about it being a font problem, I used Apple's Font Book application to validate all my fonts. I found many duplicates, which I deleted, and one font that had some kind of system error, likewise deleted. Everything is peachy now. Thanks.
Even though it was wrong forum, the solution also applies to Photoshop itself on Windows.
It is nice to see that our advice to search out bad fonts is validated by these recent users. Too bad there wasn't a Font Shop for Windows that could validate fonts without having to go through them one at a time.
------------ using PTBSync *** atomic desktop clock (ElmüSoft)
Photoshop CS3 crash by using text tool due to PTB_CLK2.TTF font
Delete PTBSync application then PTB_CLK2.TTF font (with windows font manager)
***PTBSync is a multifunction-application from ElmüSoft for the Windows desktop.
This is not a bug in PTBSync.
This is a bug in Adobe Photoshop.
If you open the font PTB_Clk2.tff in ANY Font editing program like for
example "Font Creator 5.0" you will see that this font shows completely
Also you can use this font in Word, Internet Explorer or ANY other program.
Only Photoshop has a problem.
How is it possible that all these programs work fine and only one
program crashes ?
Because the font is bad ?
Or because Photosho has a bug ?
What is more probable ?
I can assure you one thing after 25 years of programming experience:
"The program which crashes is ALWAYS the program which has the bug !"
Yes it is that easy!
If Photosop would not have a bug and the font would have a problem, then
Photoshop would behave like this:
It would tell you in a error message box: "The font PTB_Clk2.tff is
defect. It cannot be loaded"
A sane program behaves like that: It shoes an error message if something
An ill program behaves like that : It crashes.
Write to the support of Adobe and ask them to fix this bug !
Yeah, I got the same problem in CS3. It kept shutting down after a few seconds if I tried to use a text tool (or even when I opened a document with text layer). It was driving me really mad cause this is the only program I've ever bought (I use freeware for everything else but we all know there's no freeware match for Photoshop) and it wasn't really cheap for me... I reainstalled it, tried to move incomplete fonts, tried everything and nothing worked. Then in the last desperate attempt to fix the problem I disabled all the options in the Type tab and it works! The problem really is in the Font preview option. Disable it and you're fine. By the way I recommend Free&Easy Font Viewer to compensate for the preview option. It's very simple program but it does what you expect it to do. Have a nice day.
