Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk

I just got a Vista machine and have installed all my CS3 stuff, MS Office, and other various things with no problems. When I got to Photoshop CS1, It doesnt even autostart. When I click on the drive, it says to insert a CD and ejects the tray. Is this a CS1/Vista glitch and if so, is there a fix somewhere? Not seeing any message about it in the patches section

you installed cs3 then you're going to install cs1?

anyway, install can often be run by copying the photoshop folder off of the cd into a temp folder, say, on your desktop. then run the setup.exe file from there.

if it can't read the disk at all, you've either got a problem with the disk or the drive.

Re: Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk
Your disk should be readable under Vista. Actually using the applications...well thats another story.

For example, I inserted an old backup CD of PageMaker 6.5+ into my Vista PC's DVD drive recently. The PM splash screen appeared and asked me if I wanted to install. Naturally I declined.

Re: Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk
>Robert...is that really true???

yes, it's true.

>Even if it is, shouldnt Vista atleast be able to read the files on the CD?

yes it should. many people report running photoshop as far back as 7 on vista (sometimes with minor issues). but cs1 by almost all accounts should run fine. it definately SHOULD be able to read the disk.

> but the disk works fine on the other computers which have XP

if you read it on another system, do what i said and copy the photoshop folder off the disk to a network share and install from there.

>i just took the computer out of the box tonite so I know the drive isnt bad.

no guarantee. cables often work loose during shipping. any number of things could go wrong. in fact, i'd say the failure rate on almost all system components is GREATER on a new system than on a system that's been running fine for at least a couple of months.

If you do a search for Jerry Pournele's web site (I may have spelled his last name wrong, the site is Chaos Manor) and do some reading, you will see that he has had problems with Vista and drives... so the problem here MAY be Vista related

PS - JP was a long time writer for BYTE magazine, so really knows his stuff

Re: Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk
so the problem here MAY be Vista related or not .

There was a problem with Asus P5K boards where any drive but a Seagate on the RAID controller in ACHI or RAID mode was not seen correctly in Vista. Seems the problem was between the Mobo BIOS needing an update, the drive manufacturers doing a firmware update and the drivers from Intel not playing fair.

Some issues are way beyond the fault of Vista.

How ironic. You talk about wasted resources but you're thinking of using
4 gigs on a 32 bit operating system.

well, it'll only really use 3.x but at ~30 bux a gig, i thought i could splurge for the extra gig. :P

So JJ, how'd it go?

By the way, they have a gadget for the side bar 'All CPU Usage', was able to get the RAM usage up to 5.1 Gigs while screwing around in PS, it just kept going up & up. Shweet! Shut down PS and it returned to 1.6 with in seconds. So much for the 2Gig barrier.

Re: Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk
Everything good so far.

Most programs now installed and a few less-used (plus the peripherals) to be done later. Photoshop opens in 2 (TWO!) seconds even after a fresh boot. :)

The GUI is a big jump from XP and I'm learning it and what's under it with the aid of http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

Two things bug me so far: one is those damned arrows on short-cut icons and the other, less trivial, is the "Access Denied" error message which pops up when I click on folders and files outside the "Public Area". I thought turning off UAC would avoid that.

Anyway on with the learning. :)
