How do I open a document with Reader?

Instead of a paper version my computer's (advent 9415) manual/instructions are in pdf format. I have downloaded Adobe reader yet every time I try to open the manual it tries to open it with Microsoft word. I presume that word must be set as the default programme for opening all files but I have no idea how to change this. The operating system on the computer is Vista home premium. Thank you.

    Start Adobe Reader and execute menu entry File > Open...

    Alternatively, right click on the file and select Adobe to open it. If it's not there in the immediate choices, click browse and you'll find the Adobe file in the 'programs' file. Open that and click on Reader.

    Thank you for your suggestions. I've not been able to use either suggestion as I will explain. With Mark's suggetion:- the file is an icon within the MS Vista welcome centre, and doesn't behave like other files, when I right click on it there is only the option to OPEN, which if I click on tries again with MS word. Mark's suggestion would I am sure work but I have no idea of the files name or where it is to be found. I tried to search for it but wasn't able to locate it.
    You don't have to trouble yourselfs anymore, because as I am sure you know, Vista has different users as a security measure. I was having the trouble in the user I use most of the time(low security protocol), however for some reason I went into the admin user side and when I tried the manual, Reader opened it fine. So why it opens it with Reader for one user and with word for the other, who knows? But I have been able to access the manual.

    I have found that vista does some really strange things. So it does not surprise me that it opens with reader for one user and with word for the other.

    There should still be an option for you to change the default option if you'd like to use Adobe Reader versus MS Word. In your personal options associated with the user you should be able to set it to open by default with Adobe Reader rather than anything else, so if you that you'd have to select MS Word if you desired it to open like that.

    I hear what you're saying that you found a way to open it but by default you should still be able to change it for that user account you have established.

    If you figure that out would you please update this thread? It would help myself as well as others having similar issues. Thank you!

    I am facing the same problem as the original poster.

    Thanks a lot Mark for your suggestion. Right clicking on the file and choosing Reader fixed my problem. I never had these problems with XP, I regret changing to Vista.

    In continueing to try and solve I have just been to the the user account page in Vista, as suggested by Brent, but unfortunately it doesn't have anything like personal options. On the main page the only actions appear to be 'change password' and 'change picture'. To the left of the main page is a list of 'Tasks' which gives me another chance to change the password. Under Tasks are two further options:-
    'Configure advanced user profile properties' and 'change my environmental variables'. I opened both, but both of them seemed very technical with no options for changing default programmes.

    Must keep going to try and find an answer, I have one further idea to try and will post if it works.

    Update. Have found a way to open. I opened the manual again and when it went into word I was able to see the file name, which was vista_manual_EN.pdf. Now that I had its name I went to Vista search and searched for the file, on 'search everywhere' it located the file and then as the advice above:- right click > open with > Adobe Reader. So that solves the problem long hand, but doesn't help with how to set the default programme for pdf files as reader. Any more ideas?

    As said above, right-click on the file, click open with, select adobe reader. You can also tick the checkbox, so you will open future documents will Adobe Reader.

    Have done it thank you.
    Found the file name as above and put it into Vista Search > search everywhere > highlight the file > right click > properties > general > open with > option to change from word to reader
    Praise the Lord. With your help this is sorted. If only I would be able to sort my other technical challenges this easily.

    Vista does some strange things. I'm not a big fan. I was having the same problem until I found your guys info here.

    Of course I found what I was looking for in the end. The way to change default programmes on Vista is on the right hand side of the start menu, one up from the bottom. Why I had never seen this I don't know. Any way thanks for all the help.

    Hi.

    Try and open Adobe Reader first. Click "file" and then "open" select the file from there. That should work.

    Yes i agree with Duane Cilliers! Open the reader than go to file an open it from the directory where the file is situated.
