Cannot change default page format

Hi,

I am using adobe reader 8.1.2 with Linux, and when printing a document I would like to print it in A4 (the default paper size used by the printer). I would like to set A4 as default in Adobe reader, but cannot find any button etc for doing that. So I always have to go to the printer, acknowledge that the document can be printed on A4, return to my desk, and go to the printer again to pick up the printed document.
It would be really nice if I the document can be printed as A4 in the first place. Any ideas how to do that?

    Hi Alexander,

    Have you tried setting up the defaults in the CUPS for that particular printer.

    Hi,

    how can I do that? I have looked into the 'Printing' menu, but there are no options I can choose any paper format or so.

    Hi Alexander,

    To set the printer properties within reader, following steps woud be helpful:
    1) Open the document in reader.
    2) Go to the print dialog.
    3) Choose the desired printer form the dropdown.
    4) Click the Properties button.
    5) Choose the page size that you need to. Click OK.
    6) Print the document.

    I hope this helps.

    Aah, now we get closer. I can follow your steps ...

    1) Open the document in reader.
    2) Go to the print dialog.
    3) Choose the desired printer form the dropdown.

    until this one:

    4) Click the Properties button.

    because nothing happens when I click this button!! No error, no warning, just nothing happens.

    Any further ideas?

    Hi Alex,

    Please see whether the CUPS daemon is running on your machine.

    Before launching the reader through commandline, try this :
    Set ACRO_PRINT_DEBUG=1 and then launch reader.

    Then follow the first 4 steps I had told you earlier.

    You would get some error messages on the console.
    Please let me know those error messages.

    Hi,

    after looking around by myself I finally found some informations about ppd-files and so on. There is a description on this page here (does not work in the end):

    and as well some earlier messages in this forum. Unfortunately without how it has been done!
    The hopepage of adobe is useless as well, because I cannot find any printer driver downloads at all.

    So anyone any idea?

    is there no solution to this problem?

    if not, maybe someone can recommend me a good program to view and print pdf's under Linux?

    Hello Alex,

    Do you find your printer listed here - http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi? If so, you might be able to download the ppd file and re-configure your printer. That should help with your issue.

    Hi,

    I think the printer is listed somwhow on this list. Its a XEROX Phaser 4500, but in the list I only can find 4500DT, 4500DX, 4500N, and 4500B.
    I already tried to install some of the ppd files, but it did not solve the problem. If you know how to do it, maybe you can give the exact instructions again and I try again?

    Hi Alex,
    Did you download the ppd file in /etc/cups/ppd/ and then restart the cups daemon (using /etc/init.d/cups restart)?

    I have downloaded all of the different ppd files into /etc/cups/ppd and restarted cups. But still, when I click on the 'properties' button in the print-window, nothing happens.

    I even placed a sumbolic link from all the ppd files to 'laser.ppd; restarted cups, tried again. But still, the properties-button does not do anything.

    Any suggestion?

    Hi,

    this issue is still unresolved and I would be happy if anyone has any idea.
    Obvious downloading a ppd file does not work. But I have another idea: Maybe I can adjust default printing preferences in the reader_prefs file:

    .adobe/Acrobat/8.0/Preferences/reader_prefs

    so that the reader always prints on an A4 page as default. But where in this file can I set these preferences?

    Alex,<br />Since you are unable to get around the issue by downloading the printer's ppdf file, could you try using custom printing instead? It has an option of providing PageSize that would also be remembered by the Reader.<br /><br />Please try the following:<br />Open the print dialog and choose "Custom..." in the printers list dropdown. It will give you a textbox to type the command and a dropdown for specifying PageSize. Try giving a command like "lp -d <your_printer_name>" or "lpr -P <your_printer_name". Choose A4 in the pagesize dropdown.<br />I hope this would help you with the issue.<br /><br />Sincerely,<br />Neha

    thank you very much for your advice, it seems to work!! And since the command is stored (as well as the paper size) your workaround helps exactly the way I would like to!

    To set the default page size in adobe acrobat do the following:
    Go to "Start", "Printers and Faxes". Right click "Adobe PDF". Select "Properties". Click "Device Settings". Under "Form To Tray Assignment" select "A4". Click on "General". Click "Printing Preferences" and under "Adobe PDF Settings" select "Standard" as the Default Settings and "A4" as the "Adobe PDF Page Size". Click "Apply" followed by "OK" and "OK". However the page size will revert to that of your default printer so make sure that the page size of your default printer is also A4 or that Adobe is the default printer.
