Is this just the intellectual property issue or is it the crappy forum interface?
Some of the former but mostly the latter.
I have to use dial up sometimes and this place is impossible at those speeds. I've been poking around over at Nikon Gear, ProPhoto Home, and a couple of other forums. As soon as I settle in somewhere else, I doubt if I'll come back.
Mostly the former. The only issues I have with the forum it self is the log in (doesn't remember I am logged in when browser is closed, possible cookie issue), no link to jump to new post of thread.
Speed isn't an issue for me, with the exception of once in a great while it seams to be searching for the site, but doesn't happen too often.
And lastly opening the reply box causes firefox 3 to crash once in awhile. I sent a report to Mozilla.
I still check the forum each day, but I pulled all images.
I keep coming back but I notice that there are fewer posts. I think this is true for all of the Adobe forums. I'm also on dial-up. Some days the forums are so slow loading that I just give up. Other days, they seem reasonably fast. I don't know that it is a fault that lies with the forums. Never as fast as the old forums. Could be my anti spy/virus program.
The log-in is questionable. Some days works like it should and on other days, it forces me to log-in for every site. That seems rather stupid.
I like the forums and the majority of people that post/reply here. So I'll keep returning. I'll probably do more lurking and less posting. I don't post photos so that is not a concern of mine. I do understand the hesitation of others though. Appears to be an unwise move by Adobe. Especially because they make their income from photographers and illustrators. I never found it wise to anger my customers.
"(You don't HAVE to be using a Nikon — all photographers are welcome!)"
From the About this Site section:
"Welcome to our site! We are a group of enthusiastic photographers at all levels of the craft using Nikon equipment." (my emphasis)
Even if there's no "official" rule that members are required to use Nikon gear, it's still exclusionary. Would you join a group called Canongear.com? ![]()
Enjoy your new home ...

Phil, I have joined, a true amateur, and I use a Canon. It's certainly an interesting place, lots of wonderful photographers.
Struggling back to post this reply (man, but they've made something simple convoluted)
Phil (and Peter), the NikonGear forum is currently running a poll to change the name (or not), but I've noticed that many use non-Nikon equipment and no-one is sniping or even commenting. It appears to me that most there are passionate about photography and the equipment is (correctly) a means rather than an end. For Nikon owners there is much info about equipment old and new, but that does not detract at all from the excellent photography (and not so excellent, of course
) posted. The thing that gets me is the frequency of posting, which is astonishing.
I did post that it would be good to see both you and Peter there because you both have a wealth of experience and different points of photographic view to present, and from what I've seen posted that would be welcomed and respected. I've seen none of the childish Nikon-good/Canon-bad rubbish one might expect from a site so named, in fact quite the opposite - Canon cameras are brought up from time to time with (say) a certain model being preferred over an equivalent Nikon model, and no-one snipes at the poster. Perhaps because the site is a truly international one (based in South Africa), the brand thing isn't such a big deal in the meany cultures represented there.
I think if more Canon users join (and other brand users - there's a guy who uses a Leica S2!), it will eventually lose its Nikon-centric roots and become one of the best photography users sites on the Net. Yes, most use Nikon now, but if Canon owners join, then that will change. It'd be good to see Canon-taken pics there (especially I would like to see the presence of photos from Canon tele glass, and especially that God of lenses, the 200 f:1.8). Nikon teles always underwhelmed me, and on such a site the difference would immediately become apparent, particularly from the cameras of those who know what they're doing.
Donald, if you see this, maybe you'll have a look there - I know that your Amish, IR and HDR stuff would be well received, and also will give you an opportunity to re-post from your archives.
That was a challenge (kind of a user to user thing) to illustrate the word Hope. I jokingly posted a picture of my dog and got 3 or 4 votes
. I wouldn't endorse or condemn the entire site based on this singular event.
Is the site a suitable refuge for Adobe photographers? Time will tell.

Posted on NikonGear this morning by Dallas Dahms(site owner):
"The eagle eyed members will notice some slight changes to a couple of board names on the forum. Following on from our lengthy discussion on possibly changing the name of this site to a non-brand specific one, I have decided not to change the name, but to invite discussion on other brands and formats of equipment in a single board that is now found in the Gear section.
Whilst we are primarily a Nikon users community, we also invite users of any brand of equipment to post their photos in our Photo Discussion boards."
[Emphasis: mine.]
Fred, I may check it out sometime. Everytime i visit this hell hole of a forum, i just want to scream. Who can tolerate this piece of **** for more than 5 minutes? I was hoping they would come to their senses, but they are too stupid to know a good thing when they had it. Adobe has screwed us loyal patrons and i hope it comes back to bite them.
Sweet Jesus. I finally found the place to log in. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that nobody posts here, it's next to impossible.
Yes, DK, I know this isn't the best place to complain, but hey, these forums are f@cked up.
I check in (as a guest) occasionally, because I've been coming here for so long, but this is getting old.
"when did you get your clown certificate, q?"
I don't have one. There is such a thing as clown college but I never attended.
"is your red nose a prop, or the result of a punch by an annoyed bystander?"
It's not red.
"what's "q"?"
Letter of the alphabet, between p & r. Lower case q. Upper case Q.
"(and why is it red?)"
It's not red, it's white.
I placed it on a red background so it would be easier for you to see and follow me from post to post. Your interest in me does, however, make me slightly uneasy.
And now, may I please ask, what is a Laurentiu G Todie???
I used to stop by a lot to enjoy the photos people posted, and occasionally slip in a snap of my own. I'm not qualified to join in the ultra-technical discussion but I could learn a fair bit while reading. The atmosphere was often rather intimidating and bad-tempered though. Now, there's really no reason to visit so I probably won't.

I was the same. Maybe we could use this forum as a photograph forum rather than a technical one.
My opinion, if I may, is that this forum is what we make it. While most of us complain about the "new" features, the fact is that Adobe does provide it for us. It is free. While I hate the constant bickering and undue harsh criticisms I still come here to learn and offer occasional advice. I think it best if we continue down that road and ignore what we don't like.
This is a great resource that is available to us. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it. We do not have to let negative people ruin it. Just come here and enjoy the good parts and it can be a good thing again.
I don't care whether this Forum is "Free" because it is now worth exactly what you are paying for it.
I am so enjoying being part of a world-wide group of more than 6,000 keen and knowledgeable photographers over at NikonGear.com where dozens of new threads are started every day and are constantly active.
And I have gladly contributed my optional annual membership fee of a mere $10 to their Site.
This place once served us well but those days are over.
Fred and Ann -
Thanks for the encouragement to join the other group but the truth is, I was/am too busy to participate much even in here. There are many benefits to participating in various forums of course (you can learn a lot even from answering questions), but the reality is they take up a lot of time. I'm viewing the Adobe forum fiasco as a much needed "break" and concentrating on getting actual work done. For this forum specifically, it's amazing what you can get done by not getting caught up in the latest drama.

I've perused ... looks like a nice group of folks, but they're not all keen and knowledgeable! ![]()

they're not all keen and knowledgeable
of course that depends on your angle : )
I have been looking for an artist/photographer forum (with emphasis on artist) and I hoped that adobe had one
it doesn't
it seems that nobody does
they're all fans of Bush/hillary's no child photographer left behind : )
(a foolproof method of promoting mediocrity)
oh, well! I am lucky enough to live in NYC where there are a good number of art galleries and museums and I have cable internet
(brought down to the speed of dial-up by this forum)
so I'll keep busy
I wish you all good luck!
(that doesn't mean that I'm leaving for good; I'm still taking "pictures" of idiots sometimes [it's fun], mainly in the lounge : )
I've perused ... looks like a nice group of folks, but they're not all keen and knowledgeable.
That was my thought also. First topic I went to concerned tripods. One person made a point to berate a certain brand. Same brand I used for years. I was surprised to learn it was junk since mine had served me well.
While it appears to be a decent site, I do not have room in my life for 6000 new friends.
friends
huh?
isn't there a forum for friends, somewhere? : )
(I'm not looking for "friends", I'm looking for intelligent people with an interest in the arts)
[not for pretentious/confused assho les, who think that I am stalking them]
I'm not stalking morons, I'm just shooting them down when I see them
Q:
The larger User-base means that you will encounter opinions based on very varied experiences. Your tripod may have served you well but it doesn't hurt to become aware of the pitfalls which others have encountered under widely-varying and adverse climate conditions.
"fotolopithecus" I believe?

Silkrooster, I just received four, count 'em, FOUR emails of your most recent post. Yes, I know that the default position is to get emails, but this is just plain rediculous. SPAM anyone?
Ann, sorry, but the Nikon Gear site doesn't do it for me. Too many people and too many subjects. Thanks, though.
