When I'm working in InDesign, my keyboard will completely stop working. I can still use my mouse and click into text boxes, but I'm not able to edit text. I can still use other programs and the keyboard works. Occasionally, I can switch back to InDesign and the keyboard will work. This happens quite often, regardless of restarting the program or my computer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Really? I can't remember there ever NOT being a Control Key. It's in the same position, if memory serves, as Ctrl on the PC, but it has very little function on Mac, as far as I know, except to emulate a right-click with a one-button mouse (but I'm really a PC guy, so no flames, please
). The Cmd Key used to have a little symbol on it kind of like a cloverleaf, or I think on some keyboards an apple, and is positioned where the PC Alt key is located, but functions more or less the same as our Ctrl key, while the Option key (equivalent to our Alt) was is in between. this makes for some very schizophrenic keyboarding when you have both systems and forget where you are, or like me, worked on Mac in your day job and PC at home.
All very OT, but FWIW, I'm pretty sure the Apple Extended Keyboard sold with the Mac II was the first one (for Mac) with the control key in its present position.
Also, there is a utility called DoubleCommand that can remap your Mac keyboard so that command goes onto the control key such that your keyboard shortcuts are the same at home and at work. I've never tried it but I know some people who use it. I know when I do use Windows, I am forever accidentally calling up the Start menu, lol...
I have tried 2 different keyboards (although keep in mind that these issues to not affect any other applications open including Photoshop and Illustrator CS4, so I find it hard to believe it is a keyboard issue), as well as a different computer and the problem persists. There are no 3rd party plugins installed on either computer I have used. This is most defnitely an issue with InDesign CS4. I have never had issues like this with CS2 or CS3 (InDesign) and am wondering why ID CS4 is so ridiculously buggy.
Hi Peter,
I am a Mac person but have to use Windows at work and have not found a decent font manager (I have been looking for one), so I don't use any third party software in conjunction with CS4. There are no plug ins installed, no any extra anything besides what the software installs with.
I understand that software always will have some issues, and that it is impossible to create a flawless application, I am just suprised because InDesign was always the most stable of the CS for me (CS2 and CS3 are what I have previous experience with). I don't know if this has anything to do with how the suite runs on Windows (something I've never experienced before), or just with the latest edition. I don't have CS4 at home so I do not know if InDesign CS4 has these same bugs on the Mac platform.
Scha66's solution with the switching between tabs of 2 open documents seems to work, but it would still be nice to know what the actual problem is. Actually, it would have been nicer to not have wasted a day restarting and resetting InDesign preferences and not getting any real work done! ![]()
AH. You didn't mention Windows previously. Try turning off video hardware acceleration to test the vidio driver.
Right click a balnk spot on the desktop and choose Properties, the go to the settings tab and click the advanced button, and finally the troubleshooting tab. If turning off acceleration works, you need to change the video driver.

I have exactly the same problem and I can solve it by clicking the windows key, writing just one letter in the 'search' field. I resetted the preferences a few times, but it came back again. Until today I thought it was an error in just my computer (Windows Vista), but now one of the other computers in our office does the same. Is there any other solution than opening a second file?? Thanks.
None of these fixes work on my computer any longer...
I used to be able to keep note pad open and click into it and return to ID to work and things would go along happily... the software seemed especially sensitive to switching between the internet and the program itself (going between would cause the hot keys to shut off).
I've tried deleting prefs
I've deleted the back-up folder in Apps
I'm scared to uninstall and reinstall the software since last time I attempted this my entire system needed to be reinstalled. It looks like I won't have a choice however...
Anyone successfully uninstall and reinstall InDesign?
How did you delete the prefs? Read this: Adobe InDesign CS4 * Setting preferences
I dragged and dropped them to the desktop and restarted the application. This fixed my dialog box problem, however now there is not response to any keyboard inputs except within a text box for typing. This has disabled all hot keys and the ability to delete items.
Oh and I also did that key holding while starting up... got the question if I wanted to reset my prefs, agreed... still not a fix.
I suspect at this point I'm looking at an uninstall of EVERYTHING in safe mode and an attempted reinstall.
Last time the adobe software flaked on me I had to reinstall Windows. I'm slowing getting to that point.
It does sound like you have more going on than just a preference problem. Any third-party plugins or font manager installed?
Have you tried turning off video hardware acceleration to test a video driver? InDesign is generally very stable, so this sort of thing usually points to some other problem or conflict on the system.
No third party items with InDesign, the only extra plugin is in Photoshop and that's been there a few weeks now. Also no font managmenent widgets/plugins.
I haven't played with the video card accelleration... I may check that out next.
The only other thing I can think of is a newly installed Quickbooks online back-up utility which I may try to uninstall and restart and see how that works. At the moment I'm going through and backing everything off the hard drive just in case. The computer is really taxed and when trying to work, the previews on screen are really wacky. Other applications are starting to go with the InDesign. Illustrator quit unexpectedly and so did Photoshop.
I assume since I purchased and downloaded the suite together that there's no way to individually install and uninstall InDesign. Is that correct?
I had 36 gig but I've been moving things off to externals so now I'm looking at 90 gigs now... gonna dip into safe mode (the graphics card didn't work out) and remove ID...
drum roll...
That was a no-go. Error uninstalling ID in safemode. ID was not uninstalled. Next step is the removal and reinstallation of the entire suite... I suspect it won't go smoothly and I'll likely need to redo windows. I'll keep you posted.

I still have the same problem. Removing the preferences worked for two
days, but not anymore. Free space is: +300 GB, memory 4GB, no plugins
etc. No other problems, only the keyboard one. One other computer in our
office has the same problem, but not always.
Other solutions?

If you're using Vista on a PC I think by now the keyboard thing is a known issue - I hope they fix it. CS3 never had that problem and when I called to report the error I was told I was the only one (this was last fall). My quick solution that allowed me to keep working despite the glitch was to have note pad handy. The keyboard will work again if you click once into any notepad file. You don't even have to type anything.
If you're beyond the point where that would help... I wouldn't know what to tell you.
I ended up having to reinstall my entire computer. Once ID started to go down, everything went including Photoshop and Illustrator. An uninstall of the adobe suite failed miserably and so reinstalling the suite was no longer an option.
2 Days later I am *almost* back up. ![]()
Hey,
we had the same problem in the office: The keyboard stops working, in detail, i havent been able to use shortcuts and edit copy. We called the support but they couldnt help us.
Finally we figured out that you need kind of admin rights on the InDesign folder. After this it works now pretty fine!
Cheers!
I've been having this problem alot, particularly in indesign.
It feels alot more like a bug in the indesign software than windows or anything else. When I use to the direct selection tool to select a point or multiple points to edit a path, my keyboard stops responding to all entirely in indesign. Even after I select another object. It works fine on everything else runnong on my computer though.
I've found that a good way to get the response back from the keyboard is to go up to edit and hit undo to go back to where you edited the path last and the keyboard became unresponsive. Once you undo that last path edit, it works fine. You then have to go back and redraw the path edit, but you can use the keyboard again.
This seems to pop up like every 15 minutes or so when your dealing with lots of paths and is VERY frustrating.
Has anyone found a serious fix to this though? Is there any hope of a patch or anything coming out?
Just to update: I did have admin rights (I've always been logged in as the admin of the system). So this issue happened to me a number of times in Vista, but also in XP. The Adobe suite eventually begins to corrupt the OS registry and my only resolution each time was to reinstall windows entirely. Not a simple solution, but it worked for several months at a time.
My big final solution? I bought a MAC. I hate to say something so blunt, it sounds absolutely nuts. But there's no registry on a MAC and since I moved to the MAC platform everything has been stable. I'm a lifelong PC person, but the MAC has really made my workday a lot easier.
I'm sure moving platforms is not an option for most people, but when I added up the cost of my not being able to work for two days over and over - I had SPENT the money I could use to buy a MAC. I even bought a brand new PC before making the decision (with a beefy hard drive and processor) and the problem started almost immediately again (no extra software save for MS Office). Adobe will let you change your software license from PC to MAC (however they will not allow you to download it, you have to wait for it to arrive by mail).
It is one option to consider, however who knows. Maybe the problem will be solved in CS5 that comes out next month.
