Can I still buy GoLive 9?

Jun 14, 2009 7:11 PM

Hi all, I've been reading these threads with interest and have all but decided to try and purchase a copy of GoLive 9 to upgrade to (from GoLive CS) instead of DW.

Is DWCS4 a big improvement on DWCS3?

Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of GoLive 9 still?

Thanks, Sam.

If  you decide to go with GoLive 9 you will have to purchase it second-hand from someone. It was only ever released as an Electronic Download via the Adobe Store and is no longer available from there. You can purchase and transfer a license from someone if you follow the correct procedure for license transfers. On the other hand, I don't know if that's really your best option. GoLive 9 has a completely new site interface compared to earlier versions of GoLive, many features removed in comparison to earlier versions, a very idiosyncratic handling of CSS which requires rather specific handling on your part and is discontinued. It is a dead-end as an upgrade option. Try Dreamweaver and if its not your cup of tea, then look for other choices.

I would say that you should try Dreamweaver CS4 and see if it fits the bill for you. Did you try Dreamweaver CS3 and find it wanting? If so, then the best bet is to download the DW CS4 trial and see if it has improved over CS3 where you want. If you didn't, then the only comparison you really want to be making is between GoLive CS and Dreamweaver CS4.

You might be able to pick up a license of eBay, or similar.

There is plenty of sellers out there if you are a Windows user, but if you are a Mac user - forget it. I have searched all over the net and tagged Ebay and others without success, I will have to reluctantly to give in and use the less intuitive (from a designers point of view) Dreamweaver

The reason I am hesitant to go with Dreamweaver is that I have limited coding knowledge (I'm a designer) and don't want to get stuck learning a whole new program after becoming reasonably competent with GoLive CS.

One possibiility you might want to consider would be trying to get hold of a copy of GoLive CS2, then. That would let you stay within the familiar confines of GoLive far more than GoLive 9 anyway. On the other hand, you still have the issue that it is not going to be further developed or maintained. Depending on what you do with it, that may not be an immediate problem of course.

I will download the trial of DWCS4 and give it a go.

I think that's worthwhile, whatever conclusion you come to in the end. Download the trial, and hop over to the relevant section on adobe.com and check out the various learning resources a bit. The stark dichotomy some people make between DW/coder and GL/designer is, at least in my opinion, a fair bit mythology. GoLive had many powerful tools for coders and Dreamweaver has many features which aid in visual development. On the other hand, I do think that to take advantage of either fully you need to be willing to understand the underlying code to a reasonable extent.
