Managing (creating a new site)

Apr 8, 2009 2:08 AM

First...I have looked at forum entries...I have looked at Adobe DW help...I am still lost here...

I have a folder called SITES on my laptop...it has a a number of folders (sites) here such as

PLAY, Soni Bergman, BDAUL, SURVIVE-THRIVE.  My goal was to MANAGE SITE (after the fact...I already have a working site in Soni Bergman),

There are 2 other files in the MANAGE SITES box...PLAY and SURVIVE-THRIVE.

I click on  NEW...

I put in the Site name:  Soni Bergman

I put in the local root folder   /Users/bdaul/Desktop/old-machine/trip/FOLDER/pc-email/SITES/Soni Bergman

I put in an images folder  /Users/bdaul/Desktop/old-machine/trip/FOLDER/pc-email/SITES/Soni Bergman/imagery

I have LINKS RELATIVE TO DOCUMENT checked.

I put in the HTTP address    http://www.sonibergman.com

I HIT OK       I get a box that pops up with:

The root folder you have chosen is inside the foler for site 'PLAY'.   This may cause some operations, suh as synchronixation to work incorrectly.  Proceed anyway?

I don't see any reference to PLAY in the paths I gave it.  Isn't my goal to get the ROOT FOLDER to be ...SITES/Soni Bergman ???

With the description you have given here, that shouldn't happen, but it's impossible to be sure without seeing the value for the PLAY site.

    Glad you got it sorted.

The warning that you cannot undo the deletion of a site is rather confusing, I admit. The site management tool simply defines the location of the site on your hard disk, together with details of the testing server (if any) and remote site. Deleting a site in Dreamweaver has no effect on the files stored either on your local computer or on the remote site.

I am also experiencing this same problem which started around the time I installed DW CS4.

Every time I go to create a new site I get an error message "The root folder you have chosen is inside the folder for site 'ahrgCS3'. This may cause some operations ......"

The process I follow for defining a site is:

Select Site from DW's top menubar. Then select New Site or Manage Sites from the pop-up menu.

The Site Definition wizard appears and I use the Advanced tab to define the site:

Select Local Info from the Category column (usually selected by default)

    In the Local Info section:

    Enter Site Name

    Select Local root Folder

    Select Default images folder

Select Links Relative to: Document (Selecting Site Root produces the same error)

HTTP address: At this point I would usually enter the URL to my testing server which is on the same computer - eg:

http://localhost/thesitedirectory/  where "thesitedirectory" is the name of the directory where the testing files are transferred to.

I enable Cache and Case-sensitive link checking

Now, at this point I would then select Testing Server in the Category section and that is when I get the error message.

So, some things about my system:

I have XP Pro SP3 with Adobe Web Premium CS4 installed (after un-installing Web Premium CS3)

A typical directory structure for my development environment looks like this

    H:\Client Name\Fireworks\   - sub-directories for FW work

\Supplied Files\  - subdirectories for client supplied files

\website2009\   - the directory where the development files are stored - Note: - I have used different ditrectory names for this but it makes no difference - I still get the same error.

So far I have re-named the WinFileCache file but that made no difference.

I am beginning to think this is a bug, but would appreciate any comments or feedback on ths problem before I go any further.

Quickly here, I had the same problem, having many sites that I have in Dreamweaver. Now this is what I found and did.

I usually use the Advanced tab to setup a new site.

Then I played with the Basic Tab and went through the steps to setup. If you get the message that the site is inside another site, just ignore and go till you reach this window.

Where on your computer do you want to install your files?   NOW, if you look at the path, I found that there was a subdirectory missing?  Hmmmm!

Well I went to the file folder to browse for the correct path and chose it? And GUESS what? The missing subdirectory CORRECTLY reinserted itself.

Then I could create my new site.

I hope this helps. And I don't know why this all of a sudden is happening?  And there must need to be a fix soon. By the way I am using Vista 64 bit and Dreamweaver 8. And I am now happy that I found a workaround! Though it is a bit of a pain in the butt, what is more a pain in the butt is not being able to get my new sites started to begin with, because once they are up I can again be productive and creative.

    Hey bdtcomp

Many thanks for the post. It was a great help. It turns out that on mysystem I have been doing some cleaning up of old site files. I have been either deleting them or re-locating them using Widows Explorer. That means folder paths in my list of sites in DW CS4 does not match the paths on my system anymore. I will look into this a bit more. May have to manually edit DW CS4's Configuration.

    Cheers.

I now see that the list of defined sites in DW's Files palette/floater actually contains entries for sites that have been moved or deleted. So how does DW derive this list of Defined SItes ?

If that can be cleaned up, it may solve the problem of getting the error message when attempting to create a new site.

I have tried deleting the WinFileCache file which does not make any difference. I have also looked at the SiteCache folder in the Configurations directory but that only contains a small xml file for each defined site called dwSiteColumnsMe.xml and does not contain anything that would point to the site's location on disk.

Why not just redefine the site and point it to the right folders/file structure.

Check my previous post. But I had the same problem in Dreamweaver 8. So I am thinking that this might be a Windows Update problem? Because it's occuring across both versions?

Anyway, I just created a dummy site, and had it go to my website and tested uploading a file just fine.

BUT, I first created the site at the Basic Tab, because it gave better control at changing the directory path.

    I had path C:\users\bdtcomp\documents\local_sites\bobtemp

but going through Basic Tab I would see that the local_sites was left off. I also had to enter the bobtemp by typing this in.

So I had to use the next  and back buttons to MANUALLY get it to work. Just ignore the error window and you don't even need to set up FTP, you can do that after the site is registered and go back to the Advanced Tab.

But that is what is happening for me.

If you don't understand how I did this, then I can upload a video to YouTube on it. Let me know.

I know it's not a solution, but I'm not sure how to fix this in the software.

Thanks Nadia. I have considered this. To me its like taking 3 steps back to make 1 step forward. But - thats just what I may have to do. Its years since I had to concern myself with this level of DW intricacies and I think that the site definitions are kept in the Windows Registry.

    Cheers.

    Hi bdtcomp.

Thanks for your comments. I will keep this in mind. In the meantime I will go through my list of about 100 sites that DW has "defined" and re-create some of the paths to those directories that have been moved or deleted and see what happens.

    Cheers.

Sometimes I  cant see the forest for the trees.

I have just discovered this post by David Powers http://forums.adobe.com/thread/439283

I will go thru the process of removing sites from my list using the REMOVE button. Starnge thing about this though is that I recall wanting to remove a site some time back and I was presented with a message that informed me that I would be deleting the files. At that point I decided not to use this option. Now, when I remove a site I do not get that message. Oh well. Lets see what happens. This post by David (Thanks David - your books are a great help) also points out where in the WinReg the definitions are stored.
