Acrobat 8.1.5 or 8.1.6 updates Will Not Install

Jun 15, 2009 3:02 PM

I cannot get updates 8.1.5 or 8.1.6 to install on my PC.  I am running Windows XP Pro SP3, 2G Ram, Adobe Acrobat 8.1.4 (update 8.1.4 obviously installed just fine).  The automatic update for version 8.1.5 will not complete; it ends with an error message that gives 3 choices of repeating the update, quitting and continuing later, or cancelling the update altogether.  If I try to install 8.1.5 or 8.1.6 after downloading the updates from Adobe's web site, I get this error message:   The installation source for this product is not available. Verify the source exists and that you can access it.  I have run the Adobe "Repair Acrobat Installation" from the help menu and rebooted the PC, but that did not fix the problem.

Something probably got messed up with the 8.1.4 update. I'd recommend deactivating, uninstalling, run the  Microsoft Installer Cleanup tool, then install again from scratch. A pain, but it usually works.

There seems some problem with the instalation. Try running repair from the Add Remove programs and then try to install the patch.

I have the same problem.  When I go to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel and click on Change/Remove for Adobe Acrobat 8.1.4 Standard, I get the message "The installation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."  It appears that either the source for my last update, 8.1.4, is missing or that somehow my registry lost track of it.  The machine has been stable for many years and I have a fair amount of skill for taking care of computer operating systems.  Does anyone know where the "installation source for this product" should be located?  I would like to look there and see if that is the problem or if there is another cause.  Any ideas on what is going on and how my machine ended up being messed up?  I would like to avoid this in the future.

I don't even see how to uninstall it.  It appears that the machine has some idea that it was once installed but nothing more.  It looks like the thing to do is unregister it, and then try and install it again.  I don't have the disks handy so I will have to try doing so another day.

    Thanks,  Michael

"For source missing or Source not found", use the installation CD/DVD that you got while purchasing Acrobat or if you downloaded it from the website then i am sure u'll be having the backup. So eiher of the two should help you in solving the problem

When the uninstaller asks for the source either point it to the CD?DVD or to the downloaded location of the Acrobat and continue with the process.

Michael Schuh's solution worked like a charm for me. Thanks Michael.

P.S. I was using the installation CD when I got this message. Only Michael's solution carried the day.

jleesq's solution above (it is his, not mine) worked for me too.  I had to call Adobe to get help with reactivation.  The support person told me that sometimes the registration gets locked up and that I had probably not done anything wrong.

While reinstalling, I noticed the option to keep 300+ Mbytes of installation files cached on my disk to aid in upgrades and such.  I suspect I originally had done this and wonder if I deleted them a while back and if that is what messed things up.  Just a guess.  I still would like to understand what went wrong so I don't do it again.

Thanks big time to jleesq for posting great directions on how fix the problem.  I did not read the "download the Installer Cleanup Utility and run it" and understand that I needed to "install it" and then run "Windows Install Clean Up" from the Windows/Start/All_Programs menu.  Once I figured this out, things went smoothly.
