Can't paint on 3D model

Aug 24, 2009 6:10 PM

I have imported an OBJ file (3D model) into CS4. I followed the tutorial, & read the section of the manual -but am new to painting 3D maps in PShop. Everything SEEMS to be correct, but when I attempt to use the brush tool on the diffuse color map I see no color applied. I do have Open GL selected. (My mac is an older G5 quad and the video card is not listed as tested, but I suspect I should still be able to paint on the model)

I have attached screenshot of the model & related palettes.

If your Video Card is not listed here it is not supported nor will it have OpenGL on:

If video card support is not detected, your G5 will run in Raytrace (software mode).

You can email your system information from the Photoshop menu - Help > System Info.

Copy that information in a text file and email it to me,

I am using photoshop cs5 extend and try to open an obj mesh. it pops up "your video card does not meet the requirements for hardware-accelerated 3d redering. All 3d will be rendered with software only"

i have very good vedeo card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470

when the 3d model loaded in, if I try to rotate the moel, it rotates very slowly. Also it doesn't show the texture (just grey scale) even the model has pre adsigned texture from 3d package.

    Any help?

    Thanks

We would need to know your system configuration with that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470. Could be that the video card just needs a driver update, could be an incompatible system or OS...

If the model is gray and you are certain that the model has textures > it probably means Photoshop could not find the textures.

OBJ files require an external file name.mtl. In that name.mtl is the path to the texures so a program knows where to look in order to load the texture files.

but my G5 is not compliant with many new PShop requirements. CS5 will probably be even worse.

Much, because Photoshop CS5 won't run on PowerPC systems at all.

Odd behavior--I think. I did the following:

    - Created a new 3D mesh from Grayscale.

    - Edited the resulting planar depth map to have an empty layer so I can target it from the 3D (Scene) panel as the thing to be painted on.

    - Chose the planar depth map from the "paint on" menu

    - Attempted to paint.

    error appears:

"Could not edit the texture(s) directly.

Please open the texture(s) and choose an

         editable target layer to proceed."

I notice that the 3D (Scene) panel has switched to Diffuse as the painting target!

I cannot get it to stay on the depth map so I can interactively adjust the bumps in my mesh by painting. I have used different bit-depths, recreated the empty layer, questioned my sanity. Other suggestions? I can swear I've done this successfully before.

Macbook Pro, 10.6.4 with the recent graphics update

    Photoshop CS5 12.0.1 (64)
