Random red frames inserted into my mpg's!

May 26, 2006 8:30 AM

I'm using Encore 2.0 and just finished transcoding a film in Premiere 2.0. The outputted MPEG-DVD looks fine, so I import it into Encore, and when I'm setting the chapter points, I notice some frames flash neon red. I'm assuming it's something to do with bad frames? No idea why it does this because if I watch the film say in Windows Media Player, no red frames. But once it's in Encore 2.0 it inserts this corruption.

My setup: Windows xp pro, AMD Anthlon 3800+ Dual Core, 1Gig RAM, screen, mouse, keyboard. Anyone else have this problem?

This may be a glitch in the preview function. Once in awhile something odd will happen that has nothing to do with the final output. I'd venture that a final disc will play fine.

Where did the footage come from? Premiere 2? That surprises me. What is the format of the source footage?

    Ian,

If I understand your post correctly you are seeing the red frames already in PPro. In that case it wouldn't make much difference whether or not Encore messed with any of those frames.

No need to apologize. :) Are those raw footage DVDs from a camera that records on DVD? If so, what format are they in (.vob, .vro?) and how did you rip them?

I don't know if it will cure the red flashes, but you could try Jeff's DVD extraction recipe: A guide to using DVD Decrypter with EncoreDVD .

The software used, DVD Decrypter, is discontinued because it could be misused to copy copy-protected DVDs, but it shouldn't be to difficult to find it. ;)

Oddly enough, I just got an interesting email about this problem.
Don't know if it is going to help, but I have copied it below in case:

i If your video playback is spoiled by random, coloured flashes or
spots (onscreen, obviously!), then you may have a problem with your
video adaptor. The first step is to make sure that your adaptor has the latest software driver. Identify the make and model of your adaptor (most PC manufacturers provide a basic manual for this device) and then search on the Internet for a downloadable driver.
If updating the driver does not solve the problem, try this:
    1. Start Windows Media Player.
    2. Click Tools > Options > Performance.
    3. Under Video acceleration, move the slider to the middle position.
You can do this by clicking in the centre of the slider. Underneath
the slider, it should now say: Some video acceleration. Select if
you are experiencing video playback problems.
    4. Click Apply > OK.
    5. Close Windows Media Player.
    6. Restart Windows.

Additionally, you can also try reducing the acceleration of the graphics hardware as well.

I hope that soome of this might help.

I'm having the same problem, Video is m-jpeg from a camera. I edited the video, exported it as a mpeg 2 progressive non-drop frame in premiere pro. When I play it in real player or VLC media player and the video is fine. Then I import it into encore dvd 2.0 and then I preview it or make a dvd with it I get frames where the whole screen or the sides of it fill with little red boxes wrecking the video. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I played with the RGB curves on the video because the same video with untouched RGB curves playes fine in encore dvd 2.0. I'm going to confirm this by making another mpeg2 with out RGB modification and try to open it in encore to make sure. I'll try suggestions above also.

I made another copy without color correction and the split second red screen every so often does not happen anymore leading me to believe encore 2.0 doesent like RGB curve correction. Media player settings change dident work and could not find where to change Video card settings. Anyone have any Ideas?

I encountered similar problems with a flash of red frame followed by pixelated video which looked like bad cable then it disappeared. I went back to premier and the video looked fine, but noticed that each time it happened (twice during the video in encore) that a photographer had taken a picture at that moment and the bright flash caused an error in the encoding to encore. I noticed similar pixelated issues throughout the video that were not bright enough to cause the red frame, all caused by someone coming right next to my video camera and then using a professional flash that brightened the screen.

To resolve, I went back to the original footage in premier and deleted the single frame with the flash and exported back to encore.

    Hope this helps!

I too am having a problem with red frames. I encoded an HDV mpeg timeline to Blu Ray mpeg and got at least one spot that I have noticed so far with 10 frames in a row of changing messy red frames. It was right where a scene change was but there was no photo flash...

I have the same problem but the link you provided doesn't work. Is there anywhere else I can find the solution to this problem with the red flashes?

I have a 720 X 480 mpeg file and when I import it into encore DVD as a asset it suddenly has red flashes in the video every 15 seconds or so when i watch it in the monitor. I have tried all kinds of transcoding. NTSC High Quality 7mb 2 Pass and it still has the same red flash in the same spot. It is also on the DVD when I play it in the a dvd player. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I also have the adobe premier red flicker frame problem.
I ripped mpeg's (source) from my video camera.

I tried many different settings while using adobe media encoder in premier to export to mpg (m2v ready) for encore.

No luck so far yet :(

Discovered it happened after I re-rendered my footage.

I had problems with my original mpeg to output to a dvd.

So I used SUPER converter to convert my original mpeg's to MPEG-II
These files can be successfully exported to a m2v file for encore.

    - Problem:
The RED FLICKER problem occurs during the convertion in SUPER. I guess it tries to convert a busted frame.

    - Solution:
Edit the file in premier and cut out the red flicker frames before exporting it to a dvd compatible mpg.

Please let me know if anybody has more tips

I have imported Blu-ray encoded video from PPro3 and in some instances, there are red frames in the Encore timeline. This is particularly so in a motion menu. I have changed the encode settings in PPro3 to a lower bit rate, but that does not seem to help. Obviously the video is unusable. Incidentally, the same files appear perfectly in DVDit Pro HD - no red frames.

    Any answers?

If you have the 3.2 update, then this is by design. The red frames indicate corrupted/dropped frames in the mpeg stream. Pr now adds the red frames to alert you to the problem, but also to keep the audio in sync, which would otherwise drift over time due to the missing/corrupted frames.

Reshoot. Recapture. Just don't use the corrupted video.

The explanation above sounds reasonable, but on the other hand, how come such corrupted frames are playable on all other software (having installed appropriate codecs), except for Adobe? Even with WMP I was able to scroll over them frame by frame.

If red frames are intentional, does it mean that, in order to indicate a problem, Pr hides the image even though it can be read/displayed?

You know, in most cases recapturing a particular image is just impossible, especially when I'm talking about my child's birth here! ;-)

    Regards.

I have a Premiere Project that just contains Pictures...
When i export it to encore and make a double layer DVD, play it,
it shows that red frames. But... there are no missing frames because there is a picture!

when i compress this movie with shrink the red frames become more.
so what is this and can i just turn off this funktion ?

Or is there a way to check the files for missing or faulty frames ?
this is such an expensive piece of software...grrr

    Greetings

    i try this now:

    1. Close Encore.

    2. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Encore
    CS3\Plug-ins\en_US folder.

    3. Move the ImporterFastMPEG.prm from this folder to the desktop. Do not delete this file, just move it. Please note that this may cause Encore to perform more slowly.

Hey, I just ran into this problem at work today. Apparently, my supervisor told me this happens often when they neglect to use a tape-head cleaner. So first off, always take good care of your equipment or you'll be spending wasted hours in the editing suite trying to sync up audio and video...AGGRAVATING!

Anyway, my problem was that we shot an hour long lecture w/ a 2 camera setup, with the wide shot handling the audio feed from the A/V booth. Since this camera hadn't been cleaned in a while, it had the 'red frame' anomaly take place around 33 minutes into the lecture. This caused me to have a lot of problems syncing up the wide shot and the close up's, obviously. So, after about 45 minutes of wondering what the hell went wrong, I found the frame and searched fruitlessly on the Adobe forums for about 30 minutes. I ended up just going in and cutting out the red frames (including the surrounding frames that are slightly pink/red.) Afterwards, I set the adjacent clip (the 2nd half of the clip that was produced from the cut) to a speed/duration of 100.5%. This seemed to solve things for the most part, but about 7 minutes later, the a/v sync fell off again. I had to zoom into 200% of the screen size to get a good look at their lips and determine the point at which the audio went out, make a cut at that point, and reset the speed value to 100%.

Note, I also had to export this into a self-contained video due to the fact that the audio was now about 18 seconds longer than the video track.

I am still up in the air as far as how this eventually turn out, but hopefully it gives you somewhere to start.

    Mz
