My old XP computer (which I had CS3 installed) died and I bought a HP laptop with win 7 64-bit preinstalled. During installation of CS3, at about 75%, a warning popped up that said "adobepdf.dll is needed, pls insert the vista CD" . Since I don't have vista and I am using win 7, I hit ca
ncel and the installation continued with no problem, apparently.
After the installation is finished. When I tried to open Photoshop and acrobat, the program attempted to load up (I was able to see the grey screen of photoshop, but no logo) and would become "not responding" almost immediately and just stalled. With illustrator and indesign, I don't even see any screen, as if the computer just ignored me. However, under the "processes" tab in task manager, I could see the .exe files listed as "processes" but nothing under the "applications" tab. I checked the memory and it's obvious that memory usage has gone up once I tried to open the apps. Seems like the apps are taking up memory but did not appear. The only program that runs successfully is bridge.
adobe rep told me: Please follow the steps given below:
Insert the Windows 7 CD-ROM to find AdobePDF.dll, go to the
AdobePDF.dll_64 in DATA1.CAB which is included in the Adobe install file
s. Copy the file to your system and rename it AdobePDF.dll and then install it.
Since I don't have the w7 cd (HP computer comes presintalled and doesn't include an OEM win7 disc) and I can't do the above. Plus, I am not sure my problem could be solved by the above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had exactly the same problem and having been round in circles think I might have an answer...
There is a knowledgebase article which refers to Vista 64 bit:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401731.html
The technote linked at the bottom of the article: "333360: Support policy for Adobe Acrobat (8.0.x Windows x64)" suggests installing Acrobat 8.1 and that appears to have worked for me.
The technote article is here:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333360.html
and the Acrobat 8.1 download is here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform= Windows
(I went for "Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Professional and Standard update - English, French, German, and Japanese").
I downloaded all acrobat 8 updates and have updated the program up to 8.1.7, still when I opened acrobat and photoshop the program just stalled. Here is the error log I got, can anybody help?
The adobe rep keeps asking me to find the file adobepdf.dll_64 on my windows CD, which I don't have and HP does not provide one.

For me it worked immediately after installing the 8.1 update.
This is everything I did:
Perhaps you could try totally uninstalling CS3, and then repeating steps 2-11 above? Note that I did not try to run Acrobat after the initial install, which may or not be significant.
I finally solved the problem, besides updating acrobat to 8.1, there is one more step to do: apparently there is a licensing issue with 64-bit system, and there is a file one needs to download. The following are my steps, hopefully this post will help anyone who runs into the same problem as mine. Thanks to Paul and Bob who contributed to this post:
1. uninstall CS3
2. reinstall CS3, but don't start any application, coz it will hang.
3. go to adobe and download all updates for acrobat 8 (up tp 8.1.7)
4. install all the updates in sequence.
5. go to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3750 and download the file, make sure to read the instructions before running the file.
6. here's the post on the licensing issue: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1314723
7. run the licensing file per the instruction.
8. restart
9. I was able to run psd, indesign and acrobat, finally!!! (didn't test the others, but I assume they should be fine too)
