Splitting clips and exporting them out of PPro CS3

Nov 26, 2009 9:21 PM

I have two large and long video clips that I've split into several discreet clips on the Timeline with the razor tool. Now I want to export these discreet clips and use them in a Premiere Elements Project. I have to do the project in Premiere Elements so I need to have make them individual clips becuase they are too large to use as one clip. I've done a bunch of searches but haven't found anything. When I select the clip in the timeline and select export it exports the whole sequence. I can't move the clip to the project panel either. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Two questions.

Why can't you use the whole clip in Elements?

If you have Pro, why use Elements at all?

Can't you just mark your in and out points on the timeline? Use the Work Area Bar before you choose Export. It's the silver bar in the sequence panel that is just below the timecode and above where it shows the rendered status (red or green) of the clip. It dictates what portion of your timeline is to be exported...

Edit your existing Clips, as is needed. Set the WAB (Work Area Bar) over the resultant "sub-Clips" *, and Export (choosing Work Area Bar, not Full Sequence) as DV-AVI Type II files w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio (for SD), and then Import those into PrE. This will work fine.

Here's a look at the WAB:

    Good luck,

I don't have CS3 installed still, so I don't know exactly how it is worded, but you need to set it to only export the "Work Area" instead of the "Entire Sequence". The default is to export the entire timeline, if memory serves...

i tried working with the workbar as described below but your image seems to be from premiere elemetns or another version of Premier pro and i'm working in Premier Pro CS3

I think that that image is from PrE 4. Still, the WAB works the same in PrE and PrPro, regardless of the version. The colors might be a bit different, but the WAB is in the same place, and works the same way in all later Premiere versions

    Good luck,

When I select export from the file menu I only have the option to export a movie, frame, or audio, so I selected movie and when I tried to export a 28 second clip the export time is over 45 minutes and the result is it still took the whole sequence instead of just that clip (as there are other clips on the timeline I need to export as discrete clips as well).

With Export>Movie, you will get a dialog screen, where you can select Full Sequence, or Work Area Bar. Choose the latter.

    Good luck,

Here's where to look in PrPro 2.0. It will be very similar, if not exactly the same in CS3.

    Hope that this helps,

Don't worry about the time. The important thing is that you got it!

    Good luck,
