Problem transcoding a 16:9 .avi file

Aug 8, 2009 12:35 PM

Hi, I've been trying to encode an .avi file (edited in and exported from PPr1). It's 1024x576, square pixels, and in the Encore preview box (under "outcome" tab), just before transcoding, it looks fine but when transcoding is done, the video is cropped on the sides.

Could you tell me what I should do please? thanks in advance

Please tell us about your BD Project's settings and also the detail of that AVI.

There will likely be something in that data that will point to the problem. The more detail, the better.

    Good luck,

Great news, and thanks for reporting. So Square Pixels cured the ills?

I'm having the same problem, I think. I'm working on an Encore CS4 DVD project and I imported an AVI file with 1050x576 resolution, with a square pixel aspect ratio (PAR). This video is used on a motion menu.

For some reason I'm still to figure out why, when Encore transcodes this video, instead of resizing it to 720x576 with the PAL Widescreen PAR (1,46), it crops the video on both sides and leaves it with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

    What am I doing wrong?

I would edit my AV Asset to match exactly how it will be used in PrPro. Encore does a very poor job of being an NLE. Give it exactly what you want, and do not try to make it conform any Asset to something else. It does a very poor job of that.

    Good luck,

The video was created on After Effects. In order to solve this problem I created a new compostion on AE with a 720x576 resolution and with a PAR for a widescreen aspect ratio. I placed the original composition (which has a 1050x576 resolution, square pixel) and rendered the new composition to an AVI file. This way it worked correctly.

Nonetheless I would expect that Encore could understand that a 1050x576 video, square pixel, was a PAL widescreen video and shouldn't simply trim it on the sides.
