Recently my Flash Player has stopped working in both Firefox 3.5.7 and IE 8.0.6001.18792 on Windows XP. I have no other browsers installed.
If I go to http://feefifaux.net or http://prestonsbeat.com in either browser I get a message saying that I need to install Flash Player 9 despite the fact that I have Flash Player 10.0.42.34 and Flash Player ActiveX 10.0.42.34 installed. I have tried removing them and re-installing them. Other people can hear/see this content and I used to be able to hear/see it.
Firefox add-ons have all been removed. IE addons have all been disabled. Still it doesn't work. Other people can hear the embedded audio. I used to be able to hear it. When I install the player it says the install was successful and I can see the animation on that page but I still can't hear these audio clips.
I amn using Windows Firewall and Avira Anti-Vir free edition, which is my only TSR.
This may have been triggered by a recent Firefox upgrade, which seems to coincide with when the problem started.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi dfg, Saw your comment on another thread. It sounds like you have installed the latest version of Flash Player, 10.0.42.34.
If as you stated, you removed all add ons in FF, then you don't have the SWF vs 10.0.42.34 which you must have enabled. Check that first. I don't use FF, so can't remember at the moment if the SWF is in the add ons, extensions or
plugins, I think plugins.
In IE, go to Tools>Manage add ons and find Shockwave Flash Object....ActiveX Control....Flash10d.ocx and it must be
Enabled also.
Check in Add/Remove on the Java. The latest update just came out yesterday JRE 6 update 18, the previous update was 17.
Check this info and post back,
Thanks,

Thanks eidnolb. I'm not sure what I am supposed to be looking for relating to "SWF vs 10.0.42.34" but I don't see anything about SWF in the add-ons section of either browser.
In FF I don't see any options for "extensions or plugins". Only Add-ons and Applications, but it's not listed in either location. I also don't see how to add an Application in Firefox, which seems odd.
In IE, from Adobe, all I have is (these are still disabled):

I did not find Flash10d.ocx anywhere on my hard drive or in my browser settings.
I also don't see "Add/Remove" anywhere in IE, although based on your response it does appear that my Java version is outdated.
Just for fun I tried starting IE as Administrator, but I don't know the password and it doesn't allow me to leave it blank. My normal logon has admin privileges, so maybe that's sufficient.
I think I've covered all of the points you mentioned. Thanks for helping out. Please let me know if you have any further suggestions.

Hi dfg, In the IE browser add ons you have to have the Shockwave Flash Object. In FF you have to have the SWF plugin.
These are necessary for Flash Player to work. I am not sure at this point you even have Flash Player installed.
IE8 uses different terms for the same thing. Go to Start>Control Panel, you should be able to find Add/Remove there.
Whereever your programs are listed, Windows updates, etc.
You said in your post that you had Flash Player 10.0.42.34 installed. Where is this information on your computer?
You most likely need to Uninstall and Install again. You install using IE and you install using FF.
The Java add ons indicate they are old versions. However, you need to find them in Add/Remove so you can remove them before you try to install the newest version.
On the Administrator issue, didn't you assign a password when you set the account up and keep it? Someone on another forum said just enter "Administrator" but that is heresay. I don't use IE8 so not sure if that works or not. I know many people are having a problem, can't get software installed on their own computer because they forgot their password.
Evidently you were able to install software before so it shouldn't be a problem.
See if you can find the info on Java.
If you want to Uninstall and Install let me know.

I am showing Flash Player 10.0.42.34 in Add/Remove programs, but not Flash Player 10.0.42.34 ActiveX. I'll try removing & reinstalling w/ each browser. I also removed Java while I was there.
I bought my computer refurbished w/ Windows XP pre-installed, so I actually didn't set up the Admin account and have never had the password.
I'll post back when that is done.
Thanks

I uninstalled Flash Player w/ the Adobe uninstaller and then re-installed it w/ both browsers. I also uninstalled Java w/ Add/Remove Programs in Windows. I thought I would be prompted by my browser(s) to d/l the new version but I was not. Do you happen to know a link to the correct version of Java?
I also found the Plugins & Extensions tabs in FF and Adobe Flash Player is not listed although Shockwave Flash is. Should I remove Shockwave Flash?
Thanks

Ok I found JRE 6 update 18 simply by entering that exact string into Google. For good measure I uninstalled Flash Player again, installed JRE 6 update 18 then re-installed Flash Player w/ both browsers. It's still not working though.

Ok, dfg glad you updated Java and removed the old versions. I read over the posts, but I think since you have uninstalled and installed again it would be a good idea to get the latest stats.
First if you have Shockwave Flash in FF that is the SWF(abbreviation that they usually use) vs 10.0.42.34? Don't remove that.
Need the IE add ons that are now listed and the FF add ons, plugins and extensions.
After you updated the Java, did you remember to Reboot?
In one of the installs of FP using IE, you picked up Get_atlcom Class. Go to Add/Remove and see if it is listed and if Adobe DLM(download manager) is or GetPlus. Don't do anything, just let me know if any or all are there.
Thanks

If this helps any, you can see all the plug-ins you're using in Firefox by typing About:Plugins in the address bar. It isn't a web address as such, it's a special command that will bring up a browser window with a list of all the plug-ins you're using. You can enable/disable them from within that window.

Or ????

Correct, it's still not playing the audio content that I listed at the top of this thread although other people can play it. I used to be able to play it in both browsers and now I can't play it in either browser.

Well dfg, You have installed the Flash Player and the Shockwave Flash Object in the IE add ons. Also you have installed the SWF(Shockwave Flash) in FF. That is quite an accomplishment.
The problem before was that wasn't done. Now that you have done that, the obstruction is with the add ons, both in IE and in FF.
There are some conflicts in IE and also in FF. What I plan on doing is printing out your lists of both so I can work better with them.
The Java update, I don't think is the one that you wanted. The Java sight is very confusing and often many people install
the version and all of their many add ons that is for developers and those that use those versions to write applications.
If you do that, then that is fine. If not you may want to consider removing those via Add/Remove and Rebooting and I will give you the proper instructions and the link to install the one that is for users. You sort of jumped ahead of me on Java:-)
Now don't start uninstalling things yet. As soon as I go over this list, what I will propose is to Disable those that in my opinion are causing a conflict. Then have you try the websites that are causing you a problem. This is the easiest way to try to accomplish these conflicts.
By the way, I notice you use Spybot S&D, do you have the Tea Timer active?
Also without searching I con't remember if you use a Third party firewall?
Whatever you do dfg, don't uninstall and install Flash Player:-) You have it right where it should be.
I'll get back to asap.
Oh and thanks for all the hard work and supplying the add ons.

Thanks. I downloaded the JRE (runtime environment), not the JDK (developer's kit).

On Java, in IE I see the ActiveX controls that would indicate JRE 6 Update 18, however that is not the case in FF.
In the add ons for FF, the platform is SE 6 update 18 and all of those add ons indicate that. See the Java bean entries?
That is not installed or a part of the JRE platform.
We can address that later.
Right now, I want to work on IE. But another question, you have an AOL plugin in FF, nothing of AOL in IE? Just want to be sure. The following add ons in IE, I would like for you to Disable; if any of AOL is there then disable it as well.
Any add on listed of Spybot.
JQSIEStartDetectorImpl Class (Java ActiveX)
2 SSV Helper (Java ActiveX (BHO)
Office Update Installation Engine ( for the simple reason it is "Not verified" This to me is strange, Microsoft didn't verify their own ActiveX??? Disable it anyway.
Now when I disable or enable any of my add ons in IE I don't have to reboot; don't know about IE. Try it without rebooting
You are probably as tired of rebooting as I am. I've been working on the .NET Framework updates and Core Services for Windows:-)
Do the disabling first and try a website, answer my questions after that.
Thanks

Hi dfg, I am about to sign off for the night. I think you need to take a look at your Add/Remove. I see a Windows Media
Player plugin in FF, but I don't see any required ActiveX Controls for WMP in IE. Also in FF you have the Microsoft DRM plugin. If you have Windows Media Player installed, then to hear or see videos with IE, you need the ActiveX.
Many programs that are installed have ActiveX Controls in IE and the plugins in FF. Maybe things are out of sync:-)
You are making progress, everything needs to be done in an orderly manner. Steps 1-5 before 6-10. Trust me, I know where I'm going. Some of the ducks on your system are out of the row and we are trying to get all of them back in the correct row.
You are a lot closer to solving your problems than you were.
Regards,
eidnolb
Oh, and yes the S&D Resident tool is the Tea Timer, here are a couple of links.
Another thot: Does Spybot now contain any anti-virus features? If so they will probably conflict with Avira.
Copy link to clipboard

Thanks I will try these suggestions. BTW D&D Resident and Tea Timer are not the same thing. S&D Resident only works in IE. Tea Timer works in Windows. If you go to Spybot in Advanced mode you can see that they are listed spearately and can be turned on and off separately. I don't think Spybot has any ant-vir abailaities, especially w/ Tea Timer turned off, as there is nothing resident in the Windows sysem tray.

I tried disabling what eidnolb suggested then also tried disabling Adobe PDF and re-installing Flash Player as Chris suggested but neither solved the problem.
I don't use AOL at all and did not knowingly install any add-ons for it. I'm guessing maybe Winamp installed that add-on because they offer the AOL music service, which I never use.

Dear dfghghd.
As long as the other folks who are more expert than I am in the subject of Flash concur, try the following. I did a WODGE of tests because Flash works fine in my Firefox, so I wanted to find something that stopped it working. And discovered Adobe Acrobat and Flash clash. Pretty dumb as they're both by the same firm, but you've got to install them in sequence. I got the sequence right in my FF by sheer dumb arse luck!! Anyway. After lots of testing, try this:
1. Go into tools and click Add-ons
2. Disable Adobe Acrobat
3. Go to the Adobe.com and download Adobe Flash Player
4. Close Firefox completely
5. Install Adobe Flash Player normally
6. Go into Firefox and repeat steps 1 and 2 this time Enable Adobe Acrobat.
Adobe Flash Player should now work.
You can't have Acrobat working while you're installing Flash, they don't seem to like eachother. Not sure why. But you CAN have it working after you've installed Flash, THEN they get along OK.
If the techie-types here don't like this idea, I'd go along with them, I'm not that much of a techie, I just try things out a lot.
Yours respectfully - please tell me if this works for you otherwise I'll wonder forever!

bites the dust - sigh!!
Ah, well.
What I'm gonna do for my next trick is post everything I've got in my About:Plugins Firefox page right here. Because Flash is working just fine in my Firefox and someone who knows a bit more than I do - which isn't hard, let's face it - might be able to spot the difference between my plug-ins and your plug-ins and be able to deduct why it's working on my FF and not yours.
Just incase it makes a difference - it might - my version is 3.5.7
Right. Here's the post. I couldn't spot any obvious differences (that I could see would MAKE a difference if you see what I mean) but one of the gurus here might be able to.

Wish I knew more so I could help you more. Sorry I don't. It's odd about that sequence thing not working - disabling Acrobat first - because if I tried reinstallijng Flash Player with Acrobat active it didn't happen every time. With Acrobat disabled, it re-installed fine AND worked (and is working now!) I thought I was onto something there.
Workaround - possibly. I HAVE discovered that if you've got Winamp active and you go to a streaming web page, more often than not Winamp will pick up on the web page and start streaming it for you. VLC can stream flash, but you have to know the address of the actual video source, not just the .ASPX address - that's the active webpage, not necessarily the source of the video even though you can see it there. There ARE ways of doing this and I can't explain any better than by posting this link (Gurus, please don't delete this because it's got a link on it, have a look at the page I'm linking to and you'll see it is relevant to this thread. I'm not spamming.)
http://www.pallab.net/2007/06/05/comprehensive-guide-to-saving-streaming-video/
I know it says guide to SAVING streaming video, but it's also a great guide to FINDING the video source in the first place. Once you've got the source URL, you can paste it into VLC or Winamp and watch it that way, thereby meaning you don't need to get Flash sorted to watch YouTube etc. Not sure about interactive Flash, like games and stuff, never tried playing games in Winamp but I think it wouldn't work. But Flash streaming would. If they try to hide the name of the video, its size will always give it away. It'll be the biggest link in the source code, guaranteed!
I've gotten the stuff from the above link working quite well, so you can ask me any questions you like about it and chances are it'll be the one question I don't know the answer to... NO! I mean, chances are I'll be able to answer them.
Yours respectfully
ulrichburke.

Thanks Chis. I can see YouTube videos and other Flash video content, but I can't play the audio on these pages:
http://feefifaux.net/news/ and http://prestonsbeat.com/
Can you?
Other people can play it (I have contacted some people and asked them to test it) and I used to be able to play it. The reason this is a problem is because I have used this code on a few clients' sites and it's hard to work on people's sites w/o being able to verify that what you have done actually works. Also if one of my clients were to run into the same problem I would like to be able to help them solve it. People get very panickly when they pay for a web site and then it appears not to work. Luckily nobody is complaining thus far.
Are we not supposed to post links here? I'm not trying to spam the board either. Just trying to provide info relevant to the problem I am experiencing.
