website hosting, what is your opinion?

Dec 28, 2009 12:29 PM

Hi,

I recently inherited a website when I started with my new company. I've just discovered that we are hosting with a company called Intertune and it looks like we may be paying up to 400$ a month for this service. I usually use GoDaddy or Network Solutions where even the best hosting plan is around 10 bucks a month.

Can anyone tell me why I'd want to pay 400 for the same thing at Intertune? Are they offering something else which I don't see?

On that note, what's your favorite hosting company?

Thanks, Stan

As I see they provide dedicated servers. So the price may be reasonable depending on the server configuration.

There is a big difference between web hosting and dedicated hosting. Web hosting companies put hundreds of clients on single server, but if you have your own dedicated server, nobody else use it. For this reason, web hosting is used when you have small website which doesn't need too much resources and dedicated servers are used for scripts which eat too much resources or for websites which have a lot of visitors (thousands a day).

    For clarity...

"Web hosting" is too general of a term that includes "dedicated hosting" so the previous comment might be confusing when searching for a host that labels hosting in a different way.

I'm sure that MoneyTopList meant to say "shared web hosting".

    MoneyTopList could have written:

There is a big difference between [shared] web hosting and dedicated hosting. [Shared] web hosting companies put hundreds of clients on single server, but if you have your own dedicated server, nobody else use it. For this reason, [shared] web hosting is used when you have small website which doesn't need too much resources and dedicated servers are used for scripts which eat too much resources or for websites which have a lot of visitors (thousands a day).

There are actually three primary types of hosting that you can shop for (in order of ascending price and capabilities).

    1. Shared Servers
    2. Virtual Private Servers
    3. Dedicated Servers

Yes, exactly, to be correct, shared web hosting is the best phase. However, when people say "web hosting" they usually mean shared hosting. Even google search for "web hosting" returns mostly shared hosting providers.

To answer your other question, my favorite hosting company is Hostway(dot)com - they offer both shared & dedicated servers. They offer good value  at pretty reasonable prices too.

    Check this http://me.wisnetsol.com/hosting.php

They are providing hosting for less than 5 bucks. I have found their speed and quality excellent.

For some clients, i have used Go Daddy and Host Gator, and it was also satisfatory. Host Gator provides excellent support.

    I absolutely adore this company.

Fair pricing, simplicity of set-up and very reliability. I use ICUK for hosting a number of websites and never had a problem.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

    Try Godaddy or Hostforweb.

Also according to Jasmine Web directory they list 5 of the best firms (and cheapest) here.

Another good idea is to get a dedicated server (if you have more websites) but invest also 5 USD to get some dedicated IPs. You don't wanna share a single IP for all your websites.
