Designing a book for print

Feb 2, 2010 11:01 PM

When creating a non-fiction book in InDesign, and submitting it to a offset printer, should the book cover be a part of the main indd file (that has the book pages)  or is a separate file created for the cover?

It is not a problem to send single file. But the cover is in 2/4 colour and inside pages are in single colour than send separate cover file.

I usually work with 2 or even more files. The cover has a different size if you produce a hardcover book. And even if you're producing a paperback it has a back, so you're forced to work with at least 2 innd documents.

That is between you and the printer. Ask them their preference. I'd expect it to be separate.

2 files without question. If you are doing any kind of a wraparound cover you must have a separate file for the cover. The printer won't know the depth of the spine until final page count and stock determination.

Also, apart from its being two separate print jobs, with two files either can be changed separately, minimizing confusion and errors.
