External Editing

Mar 5, 2010 7:09 PM

I like to export my images to work in PS CS4 then import back into LR by just saving. Usually when I export an image using "Edit in" menu Lightroom 2 will ask me if I want to edit a copy, a copy with adjustments or the original. Recently it stopped asking and creates a .tiff that doesnt import back into Lightroom when I save it in Photoshop Cs4. How might I get that option back?

TIA,

Amelia

    Amelia,

    Possible reasons:

The options of whether to edit a copy, a copy with adjustments or the original is only presented for RAW files. Also, the option "Stack with Original" is not given if you work out of a collection, but it still should import the saved TIFF into LR (and the collection).

Actually the options are only given for non-RAW files such as tiff, psd or jpg. For RAW files, the RAW is directly sent to Photoshop's ACR and a window should open with the name of the RAW file (such as _DSC9871.NEF) as the window title. So there will be NO dialog if you do "Edit in Photoshop" from a RAW file, except when you have an old version of Photoshop and/or ACR. Then when you save from Photoshop, a tiff file will be created according to the preference settings in Lightroom that will be automatically added to Lightroom. Sometimes when you have a filtered view in Lightroom that filters out tiff files or are sorting not according to date or name, the file will end up all the way at the end of the view instead of next to the file you were editing. It is likely that the image got imported into Lightroom but you simply did not see it.

Sorry, of course ... A miss-typing on my side.

Also, I use PSE, which seems to work differntly to CS4.

I've heard that sometimes there is something weird with the preference files

that causes these symptoms. Try deleting your preference files and see what

happens. For the ones that haven't gone back, simply synchronize the folder

    they should be in.

    Amelia,

Could it be that the folder is marked hidden, and you haven't switched on Show hidden files and folders? Make sure you have "Show hidden files and folders" switched on and try finding your preferences folder thru the Preferences Menu (Preferences, Presets tab, Show Lightroom Presets  Folder ...).
