Package management broken

Mar 11, 2010 5:08 AM

Package management on the VMware image is broken. If I try to run yast from the command line I get the following error:

missing   d /usr/share/man/man3/YaST:::SCRAgent.3pm.gz
missing   d /usr/share/man/man3/ycp.3pm.gz
package yast2-ncurses is not installed
package yast2-qt is not installed
missing   d /usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-gtk/README
Something is wrong with the YaST user interface.

Normally I would fix this by installing additional packages with zypper. Unfortunately zipper is not installed on the image, so it appears there is no way to get any additional programs installed at all.

    It is not a "VMware image" in the traditional sense.  It is not the complete SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 operating system.

    It is a "virtual appliance" built on SUSE 11 "JeOS":

    The idea of the JeOS is to include only those packages that are strictly required for the functionality of the appliance (to keep the appliance size small).

    So we expect the addition of extra packages to be problematic.
