How to connect to remote database ?

I have desktop application developed using actionscrpt and MXML . I want to connect to remote database and fire some sql query to retrieve some data. I know how to do this with local database But can anyone tell me how to do the same with remote database or is it possible ?

Hey Thanks for the link
this refer to PHP on server side. But i do not have anything in PHP on server . My server side completely in PYthon using django framework. And also this for oracle integration so i will have all info about remote database and table name everything. So is still possible or do i need some work on server side too..
