CS5 Crashes on Quit

May 2, 2010 2:36 PM

Has anyone else seen this and found a solution?

Installed CS5 Standard, OS 10.6.3, MacBook Pro 4,1

When first installed, I could not change prefs - as discussed in thread:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/628368?tstart=0

I manually changed permissions. CS 5 will now launch and operate. When choosing "Quit" CS5 closes all windows normally, however the menu bar does remains and the spinning beachball displays. After about 20 seconds Mac OS reports that Photoshop quit unexpectedly. A minute later Adobe's crash reporter appears.

I've uninstalled and re-installed.

Send in the crash report with details (what did during the session, what troubleshooting you might have done, etc.).

I'm looking at all the crash reports.

Without seeing your exact report, I'm going to guess that it's a crash in ServiceManager because of bad permissions on a different folder. (we've got several crashes because of that)

    Also check /Library/ApplicationSupport

I'm still trying to get details from the ServiceManager team as they investigate the crash reports.

hi, i changed the permissions with the finder but it didn't work on all the nested files for some reason..i fixed it with batchmod.app which you can find on versiontracker or macupdate (i'll assume i shouldn't post a link). i fixed the user/library/permissions folder and the user/application support folder

    Hi,

I tried the Uninstall/Install Temp Account User method, but it did not work for me. CS5 Photoshop still crashes/hangs on quit. Any other suggestions?

    Thank you,

    -Doren

No more suggestions right now.  Folder permissions is the one cause we know about.

I'm still looking at all the crash reports for more clues.

I've managed to reproduce one other crash on quit myself - but it's one that very few people have reported.

But we've got several people looking into these issues.

I had the same issues, changed the permissions as mentioned here:

I've changed permissions on the following folders (added myself as owner, read and write privs)

    Application Folder:

    Adobe Bridge CS5 (folder)

    Adobe Device Central CS5 (folder)

    Adobe Extension Manager CS5 (folder)

    Adobe Photoshop CS5 (folder)

    User/Library/Preferences folder:

    Adobe (folder)

    Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings (folder)

    User/Library/Application Support Folder:

    Adobe (folder)

    Still had crashes on Illustrator...

Solution: Change the permissions in the ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS5ServiceManager as well.

I don't know why, but you must change the permissions separatly, it does not work setting the permissions on the CS5ServiceManager and set them directly to all subfolders

THIS old cowboy needs some pointers to information on PERMISSIONS and other changes suggested here that could expect to be necessary if this were a Microsoft product. You know, crashes with no good reason on a PC where it shouldn't be used.

Where do I find and how do I use the various technical nostrums suggested? Permissions and the other places we're being sent with no help? CS5 Service Manager? What's that? Where is the badly needed information on installation problems?

I'm running CS4 Design Premium and have now loaded -- from purchased Adobe discs! -- CS5 Design Premium on my 17" MacBookPro using 10.5.8 because of the problems with Snow Leopard.

All was running fine on CS4 so while this gets sorted out, I guess it will be necessary to go back to CS4 so I can get some work done to pay for this lost time.

Last Adobe employee note here was written on May 4. This is May 10 and seems to be very little to help those of us who have bought this upgrade. Where do we file for a refund?

I had all these same problems. Spent HOURS on the phone with Adobe tech support today, and I am very upset that they did not inform me that this is a known issue! They had me uninstalling and installing numerous times. I repaired all permissions system-wide, changed all relevant Adobe permissions, and then I was able to save a preset. But the program still crashed on quit. It ran fine via an alternate user.

So I checked here, and what DID work for me, thanks to the notes posted, was to uninstall, log in as a test user, reinstall via test user (I still changed permissions again to read/write for everyone); log out of test; log in as main user. It works!

I wish I had known to do this this morning; it would have saved me the whole day. At one point, I was on hold more than 40 minutes -- after talking with someone and waiting to be transferred to a "Photoshop specialist." I finally hung up in desperation. Eventually the tech person told me it is an "Apple problem, not an Adobe problem."

Chris, my Incident # is 181590512. If you send me an email, I will gladly send you a crash report.

Thanks to whoever came up with the above solution!

I seem to have the same problems with permissions.  I activated the root accounrt and installed from there, but I have permission problems and crashes on exit unless I also run from the root account.  My regular account also has admin permissions.

New install, running 10.6.3 on a MacBook Pro.  Here is my crash log:

Service Manager crash on quit -- seems to be caused by a permissions problem (according to the service manager team), and we know that sometimes the installer has problems assigning the correct permissions.

The Service Manager team is supposed to be working on a way to patch permissions, and a fix to their code.

it looks like adding myself to the sharing/permission and giving read/write permission for

    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS5ServiceManager

    fixed the problem

Like everyone else on here, I'm getting the same error and crashes with PS CS5 on Mac Pro with 32Gig of RAM.  Please send us a fix ASAP.  As of right now it is useless software we have paid for.

Please read the existing answers before posting.

You didn't even tell us WHICH error or crash you're seeing.

This seems lame but sorry to say I'm having a problem finding how to address the 'permissions' problem.

Is there a link to a fixit or just plain "here's how it works" site on that?

    Thank you.

I've read every answer before responding.  Why the hostile response?

PS CS5 says my Nvidia GTX 285 card doesn't meet minimum standard and

will not do Open GL/CL, yet It is listed as meeting standards on the

    Adobe requirements.

It says it cannot save my preferences and Open GL is grated out.  It

then crashes and says it can't save my preferences.  I'm just trying

to get my $2500 investment in CS5 Master Collection to work.

I appreciate any help you can provide but don't be hostile to those

    seeking solutions.

    Thanks,

    Dave

don't take it personally videobuddy, this release has had alot of issues, some trade offs, and one brilliantly stupid installation flaw which is kind of embarrassing and has made alot of people rather angry. by all accounts chris is a good guy just trying to gather all the data he can to get this fixed, but i imagine things are a bit fraught in the bunker right now!

I believe here are a whole lot of permissions problems occuring here, and I agree with others that this is not acceptable for software product like this.

In any case I have solved the permission problem of CS5 not being able to save your preferences on exit. You need to add read/write permissions to

    /users/<your username>/library/preferences/adobe.

To change permissions of a folder, right-click on that folder, select Get Info, then click the lock on the bottom, enter your password.

Then select a + to add yourself with read/write permissions if you don't have them.

Unfortunatly I believe there are other permission problems at play here as well, that also need to be fixed.

You should NOT have to add yourself to any permissions in the ~/library  folder. This is a system folder.

    That wasn't hostile.

That was simply pointing out your mistakes and lack of information.

The only thing I know that makes Macintosh OpenGL fail is having multiple mismatched video cards or using the Intel integrated chipset.  MacOS OpenGL only works with matching video cards.  And the Intel graphics chipset is just underpowered. (oh, and certain video cards that just don't work: like the old 7300GT)

The preferences file is in /Users/<yournamehere>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5/...

(or ~/Library/Preferences/... for folks familiar with Unix)

    /Library is a system folder

~/Library is inside your user directory, as indicated by the ~ character (which resolves to your user's home directory).

Thank you for that but the question remains that in some cases the "permissions" don't seem to be functioning as they SHOULD so I was just seeking a place where I could find a better understanding of what we are discussing to help me spot the problems.

Perhaps there is no way to find that.

I had all these errors and crashes, and I have been using Photoshop CS5 for a couple of days now with no problems, starting and quitting many times. MacBook Pro 10.6.3. Here's what I did:

    *  Uninstalled Photoshop CS5 and all previous versions of Photoshop. Used the appropriate uninstall programs -- did not rely on dragging files to the trash. I had saved  a copy of my former Presets (brushes, actions, etc.) that I wanted to use with the new version.

    *  Created a new Test user account. I left the password area blank; kept it simple. If you don't know how to do this, here's how: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html

    *  Logged out and logged in as Test user.

    *  Installed the program from the CD within the Test user account. Made sure to install it in the system-wide Applications area (under the name of your hard drive) so it can be used by any user on the computer.

    *  Used Get Info to change permissions on all the Adobe files and folders listed by another writer above to Read/Write for Everyone.

    *  Opened PS CS5, created and saved a new document size preset, put some type into a dummy document, saved the doc.

    *  Quit -- no crash.

    *  Reopened program; document and preset (a change to preferences) had been saved.

    *  Logged out and logged back in to my regular user account.

    *  After another fine start and quit, I moved all my former brush folders and actions into the CS5 Presets folders.

    *  Everything has been working fine ever since.

Thank you clstern for that good detail. Seems very different from the instructions passed along by Adobe.

I've been noticing a lot more problems from folks using Snow Leopard than I see from old Leopard where I'm still parked.

Wonder if there are some internal CS5 differences with Leopard 10.5.8 a few different problems to go with them.

i'm hoping there'll be some improvement with the graphic driver update in 10.6.4. 10.6.3 seemed to make alot of open gl stuff unpredictable and i found in the past that gpu freakyness in general would make cs4 unstable

    Hey Everybody,

Let's focus on this first. How the hell can Adobe miss this after ALL THE YEARS THEY HAVE BEEN RELEASING PRODUCTS FOR OSX!!!

    Unforgiveable...

Now to the first solution for the inherent problems with the installation, more to come on the problems within the applications later.

Fix the permissions on the Library/Application Support/Adobe, User/Library/Application Support/Adobe, User/Library/Preferences and User/Applications by selecting the folder itself, adding your user and allowing read/write permissions and then Apply to Enclose Items

This will change the permission for all items that Adobe somehow missed if they beta tested on anyone's system before release...

Really poor programming and customer support.

Can anyone tell us if Adobe is a.) aware of this problem and,

b.) doing anything about it and,

c.) the schedule for getting CS5 back to expectations?

    Thank you

It gets worser and worser (and yes, I do speak English).  I fixed the permissions problem by following the instructions provided in this thread.  The good news is PS CS5 will now open and close properly and it recognizes my Nvidia GTX 285 Video card as being adequate as a GPU for working with PS CS5.  The bad news is the permissions fix also locked me out of my three disk RAID attached to my Apple RAID card, which just happens to be where all of my audio, video, and photographs are.  I have the same question you are now asking, "How can that possibly be true?"  So far, Apple's only solution to fixing the problem is to trash the RAID and rebuild it.  They have never seen anything like this happen before.  Disk Utilities and RAID utilities see the disk and everything I run on it says everything is OK, but there is a small "lock" icon on the disk icon and it will not allow me to see what is on the RAID disk.  I suppose this problem could get worse, but I'm having a hard time imagining how.  I will probably start all over tomorrow and rebuild everything from scratch.  Something tells me this version of the Creative Suite was not fully vetted and beta tested.  We are at least part of the beta testers and I'm about to lose dozens of hours rebuilding everything to add to the many hours already lost in this mess.

Maybe others can confirm, but it appears this problem only seems to occur
for those users with past Photoshop installs. From what I have seen, it the
system has NEVER had an Photoshop install, it seems to work OK.  Is this
what others are seeing?  This has been my experience.

    Still no excuse for this.

Even at my modest hourly rate, I've wasted more billable time fixing CS5 than it cost for the "upgrade."

These forums seem to be the only way Adobe has found to be notified of problems but they are insufficient when most of the acknowledged problem fixes came from other customers. Or am I missing something, Chris?

OK new wrinkle. I've found this in the console log entry:

    5/18/10 7:09:41 PM [0x0-0x44044].com.adobe.flash[533] 2010-05-18 19:09:41 : ERROR vcfoundation::system::VCAccessDenied: open('logs/CS5ServiceManager_native.log', 1545) failed <13: Permission denied>

Adobe has an application running in background called CS5 Service Manager and this is generating hundreds of errors for all their apps in the background probably causing the app hangs and crashes. It's is related to permission access to a log file. Just one other missed item during Adobe extensive beta testing on Snow Leopard. (OK, they didn't do a lot of testing, heck their are bills to pay and pockets to line.)

    Ano,

A professional software company would have put betas out in all likely environments. If Adobe did that, they have managed somehow to avoid anything that might have been learned from installing CS5 into a CS4-running system. The variety of "advice" given those with different problems with CS5 is very worrisome. Adobe tech support is quoted as saying 4 and 5 co-exist just fine but also advising uninstall of cs4, new install of cs5, etc. So it can't be true both ways.

It's interesting to note the heavy emphasis on these free "trial versions." Makes me wonder if the buyer base is so leary of new releases that a substantial number now wait for all -- or some -- of the bugs to get worked out before buying. That's this old cowboy's strategy next time! And now I see that those of us who paid for the upgrade on announcement day in early April are seeming to play second fiddle to those who are struggling with "trial" versions. In other words, no express service for the paying customers that one would expect from a civilized company.

Yes this is an "upgrade" problem. If the permissions had been set to copy those of the corresponding folders from CS4 there would be no problems. As it is I'm still debugging the CS5 Service Manager as we speak.

    CS5 Upgrade Path:

Well most of the struggle is behind me. This is a HUGE permissions clusterf*ck and there are some other significant let downs but hey, its Adobe!

    1. Use a utility such as BATCHMOD to change and repair permissions. These are the areas to work with but may not be limited to these alone. I did enable viewing hidden files and had my console close at hand to monitor the progress.

    • User/Library/Adobe
    • User/Library/Preferences < all Adobe Preferences >
    • Applications < All Adobe Applications >

You will need to add the User/Administrator for your computer to the ACL list and then apply those permissions to all the enclosed items. That should allow all the CS applications to write the necessary files in the appropriate locations.

But, you will lose your workspaces, your custom actions, styles etc. Those can be found in the CS4 (3) folders and copied to the corresponding CS5 folders. The Adobe Extension manager will allow you to import the extensions you have loaded from previous versions.

I imagine that Adobe is letting us do a lot of the beta testing ourselves. Hey I only lost a half a day! Hooray...

    Solved on a Mac

Actually I WASN'T performing an upgrade install, I was installing FULL copy, it just so happens that I had previously attemted to install CS2, which never so much as ran, but apparently it was enough to screw up this install.

In any case I think Adobe needs to invest a bit more in quality control on the Mac platform.

Or am I missing something, Chris?

Yes, you're missing the many employees posting fixes and working with customers to diagnose the problems.  (some of whom failed to get employee labels on their AdobeID account)

Technical Support is also gathering reports of problems, and possible solutions.

User submitted bug reports also help, when they include contact info so we can get in touch and help solve the issue.

The crash reporter system is gathering data, and we have created bug reports from those and assigned them to engineers to investigate.

You're seeing less than 5% of the troubleshooting going on.

    Franssen,

You have earned a very enthusiastic note of appreciation for your detailed work. Alas, it's wasted on this old cowboy because the technical aspects of this mess are beyond my ken. In the "good old days" I was a programmer but the issues involved in 'service managers' and 'permissions' and using and repairing damage is just not possible. When you are 75 I hope you can still do it!

The arrogance of a monopoly such as Adobe holds in the creative suite functions -- if history is consistent -- will attract competition sooner or later. It's already 'later' for me and I hope Google gets busy or another group and they take the trouble to coordinate the various elements of a new creative software package. That similar functions are treated differently in their commands as you switch from Illustrator's needs to InDesign and over to Photoshop and I can't tell you how nervous I am that one day I'll have to use Flash. Perhaps by that time a truly unifying concept will be in charge and the suite that results will be far more powerful with much less grief and probably be available for half the price to a waiting and friendly customer base. They might even give you a free copy for being a beta tester and I bet there are those on this board who think that's a new idea.

There is possibly what seems to be competition between various groups, the constituency of programmers that 'owns' the different parts of the suites. That's why we have this problem with what should have been TASK ONE, thinking of successfully about installing the new code before you get too busy with the 'goodies' to take care of it properly and -- as a result -- the new stuff doesn't work.

    Chris,

You are right that there are probably hundreds of forum posts, blogs and sites posting the fixes and work arounds. What is being said is that Adobe should have been aware of this problem — this is a simple problem. And there are many other small problems as well that are vexing like the loss of settings and customization. Plus the upgrade is not something that I believe we will be raving about. $600 and more is big outlay but more than that we would like for Adobe to be a bit more "Mac friendly" after all we were the original developers for the software. I feel like they've migrated to the Windows world and have neglected the Mac lately. Here's hoping they jump on the bandwagon but of course... we have to work out the kinks with Flash/HTML5 for now.

(OK, they didn't do a lot of testing...)

5000 users over a year and a half wasn't a lot of testing?

    Wow.

This permissions bug appeared after beta testing was completed, and before we shipped the builds to customers -- sometime during the suite integration of the installers.   We're still trying to figure out what went wrong.    We have many people working on a short term solution, and on long term fixes.

Stop with the insults and either help other users solve their problems, or sit back and wait for a fix.

Well, looks like I'll be one of the "sit back and wait for the fix" types since I'll spend the next two days rebuilding my system since this entire mess has trashed it top to bottom.  I'll be watching the mailbox for a new set of CS5 Master Collection install disks sometime down the road.  This time, I'll wait a week or so to see how the new set of installation disks works for others before being a "guinea pig."  There are several features I really need in CS5, but the lost time can never be made up.  As an engineer and developer, I've always followed the rule of not being the first to jump on a new product...until now.  Man, I hate it when I have to tell students and coworkers how stupid I was to not follow my own advice.

I don't mean this as an insult, because I agree that insults will get us nowhere in solving the problem.  However, how can something this big sneak by 5000 users (beta testers?) over year and a half and not be isolated?  Something doesn't jive.

    Read what I said.

After beta testing is completed, the installer team finalizes things for the suite installers.  Somewhere in that process (AFTER beta testing), this bug was introduced.
