Over here at the end http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 I was given ideas about converting AVCHD to AVI
That works great... EXCEPT
If I have only video the idea to cut 8 pixels from top and bottom works perfectly..,. the output AVI fills a widescreen DVD just right
HOWEVER
If I add a Title (with the correct size of 1920x1080 PAR 1) and export to AVI... the video that plays from a DVD at my TV does NOT fill the screen, it has bars on either side... not just the title, the entire video
Any ideas?
I've now done this twice (blanks are cheap, but I'm going to have to buy some RW's for this testing) and both time, I create a "roll" title that IS the correct size for the project... and when I export, the entire output has LARGE black borders on both sides
I'm not finding anything in help/pdf to give me a clue... anyone have any ideas?
John,
Check that your DVD player output is setup properly to show FHA (full-height anamorphic) DVDs. It will really depend on what format your TV is. Most DVD players have the option for 4:3 full-screen, 4:3 letterbox, and 16:9 full-screen. You may have it set to 4:3 full-screen and have a 16:9 TV. Additionally, many DVD players have (I find) annoying "zoom" or "scale" functions that can be inadvertently set, which will distort playback.
Also, be sure that when you bring your assets into Encore, that the properties panel for that particular asset shows as 16:9, and not 4:3--Encore seems to have difficulty with some frame sizes.
I am about 99.9% sure the problem is not my player (which goes to a Sony projector to a 93" screen)
If I create my project with NO titles, and do the process of shaving 8 pixels off top and bottom and scale to fit the output, the resulting DVD plays perfectly in my movie room... no bars and fills the entire screen
Add a rolling title, same export settings, and the exported AVI shows the large black bars on either side when played on my computer, and when authored with Encore (since Encore is just using what it is given)
There is something about a rolling "screen credits" type title that is not working when shaving/scaling to fit a widescreen project
I'm going to go in a bit and create a new project and create a "static" title to see if that works, since my thought now is that a rolling title, since it is designed to scroll from "below" the screen to "above" the screen... may not be processed when shaving a few pixels off the top and bottom (good thing I'm doing all this testing with sample files... no deadline here, just learning)

I think you're probably right; I misread the part about you saying that it displayed properly sans title.

In regard to the black bars: do they squeeze in the video, so that it's horizontally squished, or do they just cover the sides of the video so that the part that does show is the correct aspect ratio?

Indeed, but why the AVI reacts that way is strange. All I can figure is that something is amiss in your export settings--AME will eat what it's given.
Further testing (viewed output on my computer, will go upstairs to movie room later... but I doubt it will be different)
This test was with a STATIC title instead of a rolling title
No title at all... DV Widescreen output has "narrow" back bars on each side, cropping 8 from top and bottom and scale to fit results in a video that fills the screen
Static title... DV Widescreen output has "narrow" back bars on each side, cropping 8 from top and bottom and scale to fit results in a video that has "wide" black bars on each side
As I said... I need to play the DVD to my projector to be sure, but there seems to be "something" about the 8+8 cropping and scale to fit that does not work if there is either a static or rolling title
The video and 8+8 cropping and scale to fit settings are the same... no title = crop + scale to fit works as it should... any title and it doesn't work right
Since there are times I do need a title, I think I will just live with the narrow black bars on each side when going from AVCHD to DV Widescreen
Back again after playing the DVD on a real player... same result
The video with title and going straight to an NTSC DV Widescreen output plays with "narrow" black bars on each side
The same video using 8+8 top/bottom cropping and scale to fit results in "wide" black bars on each side
I don't know if this is a CS5 bug or "feature" but I did make a report to https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
Since I can live with the narrow black bands, I now know to just export from AVCHD "as-is" to a Widescreen AVI to feed Encore (I haven't tried Dynamic Link yet... may do that another day)
Now... off to have the wife "arrange" the individual rooms the way she wants and more filming so I can force let my out of town relatives see a home movie of where we live
Later, when the weather is nice, I'll go film a friend's soccer game to see how rapid movement comes out on a DVD from AVCHD source
