When I open InDesign, I can't get the toolbars to work (the ones along the left as well as the varioius Type and other tool bar icons across the top. I tried removing my preferences, but that didn't work.
Did they ever work? Did you follow these directions for replacing the preferences: Replace Your Preferences?
I really don't remember as I just installed CS5 a week or so ago, and don't know if I used it or not. I did have the same problem with the earlier version, but I can't find the solution I used.
I did follow the instructions you sent. The actual tools that don't work are related to the Type tool When I select the Type tool from the left tool bar, the numerous options in the tool bar that appears across the top (Horizontal, just aboe the work space) don't work. I also can't use the type related tools in the Type drop down box that's above the horizontal toolbar. The two Arrow selection tools (the solid and hollow ones at the top of the vertical tool bar on the left) also don't work.
Ok. When I renamed the default preferences by going to User>AppData>Local>Adobe>InDeisgn>Version 7.0>en_US/Cache>InDesign SavedData
and
User>AppData>Roaming>InDesign?Version 7.0>InDesign Defaults
Even after opening the application after this was done, I am unable to use the 'T' Type Tool. I can use the cursor to select type in the document, but I cannot use any of the tools in the Control window above the work space. Nor can i use any of the tools that come when I use the 'Type' drop down boxes from the space above the Control window.
All the other tools in the Tools window located along the left side of the screen do function.
I have InDesign installed as part of Adobe's CS5 Standard suite. The other applications function fine.
I was thinking maybe you had the text on a path tool active, but that seems not to matter in my testing, so unless Bob has a better idea I'd suggest uninstalling, run the clean script (Adobe - Adobe CS5 Clean Script), then reinstall.
I tried un-installing it and I got a message that it couldn't completely uninstall. I got a messag that I could see a detailed message 'below' as to why not, but I didn't see any message 'below'. So, I went and un-installed InDesign CS4, reinstalled InDesign CS5, took care of the preferences again, and guess what? Same problem. I'm really at wits end. Do I need to delete all Adobe programs, and reinstall them? This will take a lot of time.
I was getting kind of tired trying all these 'fixes', so I went back, uninstalled all my previous Adobe programs, including CS5, CS4, CS2 and whaetever else I had. Then I instaled CS5 all over again. I got a message that some of the files for CS5 did not install correctly, Adobe Error Code 6, so I went and looked at the text file created during the install process. Here is the summary of that file:

Does this help?
Does your system meet the minimum requirements for installation? (I have to say I got a bunch of similar "does not meet" errors on my laptop when installing Design Premium, but everything seems to be working so far. No errors on the desktop installing Master Collection, though I got a warning -- go figure)
Uninstall everything again. Run the clean script AFTER the uninstall. Restart the computer again with all non-essential programs and services turned off (especilly virus and spyware scanners, messengers, and browser toolbars), set the screen resolution, and try the installer again, then resatr normally and reset your monitor.
I'm out of suggestions for things to try without being in front of the machine to see what might be conflicting. I'm fairly sure there's something you run in the background that is the root of the problem (hence the attempt to try in safe mode).
I wish I had something better to tell you... ![]()
No, I don't have that software. When I find the problem I'll let you know so you can add it your database of known issues. Thanks for your help. I still have InDesign CS2 on another computer, so I'm not out of woods and do have an option. I guess a spare computer does make a lot of sense now.
Thanks, Bob.
It's been a really long week for a Monday. Happened to wander into the boiler room looking for my pipe crimper only to find the water heater sprang a leak -- not as bad as your flooding last month, but I really don't need the expense right now. Got it down to a slow drip, though, by driving a screw through a piece of an old inner tube. it should hold till morning...
After several hours, I finally found the culprit! I tried first by turning off all the startup items in the system configuration (msconfig). None of these were causing the problem. Then I tired the items under the 'Services' tab of the system configuration window. Wouldn't you know, as I went through the alphabet, trying them 5-8 items at a time, it wasn't until I got to the 'T's that I found what was causing the problem. It's the 'Themes', a Microsoft item, that caused the problem. Other than the the 'blue' background in the taskbar at the bottom of my screen, what other items does this control? Is there any harm in leaving this off, or are there any other known problems or potential 'fixes' for the Themes services? For now, I can leave this off until I either learn of a solution, or find that this may cause other problems I haven't yet found.
I think I may have seen some mention of this before (maybe only mention of using Aero, though), but forgot to pack it away with the other trivia I keep handy in my overtaxed brain because I don't have an OS where this couyld come up, and wouldn't use themes like that in any case, probably.
Maybe next time I'll remember and you'll have saved someone else all the grief you've just gone through. Thanks for reporting back.
Thank god I finally found this thread!
When I'm having software/hardware issues I always search on Google to find a solution. I'm always saying that "if I'm having this problem, someone else must have it" and the solution would be there too.
Well, after searching, I couldn't find anything at all. I felted very alone for a moment! Lol!
Deactivating the Aero themes under Windows 7 seems to be a nice working temporary fix.
In fact, I have found this in Adobe knowledge base (dated 15th June!) which give the same solution :
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403039.html
I just hope Indesign Programmers will solve that issue in an upcoming update. All others CS5 products are working perfectly fine under Aero Themes, I can't see why Indesign couldn't be the same!
Let's face it, Aero Themes are not essentials, but Windows 7 do look very ugly without them!
