HELP MAKING GALLERY WITHOUT DATALISTS

Jun 14, 2010 12:12 PM

Okay, so I've been trying to figure this out for 2 days and I'm getting frustrated. Can I make a gallery using this technique without datalists?

I don't want my thumbs to be in even rows and can't seem to overcome this issue using datalists... Anyone??

    Hello,

What kind of layout do you want your thumbs to have? It is possible to have all of your thumbs have their own "On Click > Go to State" interactions, where each state has the image you want to display. You would probably want to put all of this inside one custom component. To make the thumbnails clickable, you would need to convert them to a custom component first.

If you do not want to use datalists, the link that you have is probably going to give you more of a headache than anything else.

Here is an example of creating an image gallery using data lists (in case you were wondering what one might look like).

You could also use a tool like Slideshow Pro to create an image gallery that you could import into Catalyst.

    Hello Chip,

It would be good to see what you have working in order to get a better idea of how your application is set up.

From looking at your diagram, I might break down the application this way.

    1. "Gallery" custom component that contains everything. It may have different states for things like thumbnail visibility.
    2. Left-most "text" custom component. Clicking on it performs an action to expose the thumbs. Responds to mouse over, click events.
    3. Middle "thumbnail" section displaying thumbnails. You can make these a couple of horizontal / tiled data lists, or you can manually place each image and make it a custom component. Clicking the leftmost text changes the gallery component state to make the thumbnails visible.
    4. Rightmost "content" custom component. Has a state displaying each piece of content (state 1 displays image 1, state 2 displays image 2, etc). Clicking on a thumbnail sets the content component to the appropriate state.

    Hi Chip,

When you have your gallery working, if you can post a link we'd love to see it! A lot of designers are interested in making galleries in Flash Catalyst, and the more different real-world samples we have to share, the better. It's always really good to hear how you arrive at the final solution that worked best for your particular project.

    Regards,

    Kim

    Hi Chip,

Your gallery looks great-- really nice work!

You can reduce your overall file size by optimizing your graphics. For vector images, you can use the Optimize Vector Graphics option to make the images smaller, while still retaining the ability to edit the vectors later if you need to. For raster (bitmap) images, it's a good idea to size them down as small as possible (72 ppi) in Photoshop or Fireworks. Here are some links with more information on optimizing:

Also, you obviously figured out publishing, but just in case you want more explanation on the different publishing options, here are a few video tutorials you may find helpful:

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Chip,

Bear just wrote a nice tip on this over on FlashCats-- see if this answers your question:

Whoops! Kim beat me to it!

This is a common question that's going to go up on the FAQ soon.

You need to reset components whenever you want them to go back to their initial state. There's some additional discussion of this issue towards the end of this thread.
