My toolbars don't work in CS5 InDesign.

Jun 2, 2010 2:01 PM

When I open InDesign, I can't get the toolbars to work (the ones along the left as well as the varioius Type and other tool bar icons across the top. I tried removing my preferences, but that didn't work.

Did they ever work? Did you follow these directions for replacing the preferences: Replace Your Preferences?

Sounds like it might be some sort of conflict with something else on your system.

    Any ideas, Bob?

    No clue at all.

But I wouldn't mind a better definition of "don't work."

I was thinking maybe you had the text on a path tool active, but that seems not to matter in my testing, so unless Bob has a better idea I'd suggest uninstalling, run the clean script (Adobe - Adobe CS5 Clean Script), then reinstall.

Is there someone local who can help you? Creating users and starting in Safe Mode are basic Windows operating system functions. It sounds as if you may be out of your depth trying to fix this on your own.

I find it helps to just keep pressing and releasing the F8 key as soon as you turn the machine on.

Does your system meet the minimum requirements for installation? (I have to say I got a bunch of similar "does not meet" errors on my laptop when installing Design Premium, but everything seems to be working so far. No errors on the desktop installing Master Collection, though I got a warning -- go figure)

Is the resolution on your monitor differnt from the minimum requirement? It might help to reset it temporarily for the listed res.

Did you run the clean script befor reinstalling?

Uninstall everything again. Run the clean script AFTER the uninstall. Restart the computer again with all non-essential programs and services turned off (especilly virus and spyware scanners, messengers, and browser toolbars), set the screen resolution, and try the installer again, then resatr normally and reset your monitor.

I'm out of suggestions for things to try without being in front of the machine to see what might be conflicting. I'm fairly sure there's something you run in the background that is the root of the problem (hence the attempt to try in safe mode).

I wish I had something better to tell you...

Theres a configuration utility -- used to be MSConfig, but don't know what the name is in Win7. You need to run that and turn off everything you know you don't need, then keep adding stuff back in until ID doesn't work. You can do it in groups to speed things up.

You don't by any chance run Trusteer Rapport banking security software? There was a known issue with that a month or so ago, and they issued a patch.

    In Win 7 it's called...wait for it...msconfig.

    Thanks, Bob.

It's been a really long week for a Monday. Happened to wander into the boiler room looking for my pipe crimper only to find the water heater sprang a leak -- not as bad as your flooding last month, but I really don't need the expense right now. Got it down to a slow drip, though, by driving a screw through a piece of an old inner tube. it should hold till morning...

I think I may have seen some mention of this before (maybe only mention of using Aero, though), but forgot to pack it away with the other trivia I keep handy in my overtaxed brain because I don't have an OS where this couyld come up, and wouldn't use themes like that in any case, probably.

Maybe next time I'll remember and you'll have saved someone else all the grief you've just gone through. Thanks for reporting back.

Sorry, outside my realm of experience. I can think of a real downside to leaving them on, though.

That's the one. If you run themes you can't run ID...

Since make my living running ID, that's a no-brainer for me. I'd also add that thousands of users are running ID on Win7 without incident, so I'm guessing turning off the themes is not going to be a problem.

Thank god I finally found this thread!

When I'm having software/hardware issues I always search on Google to find a solution. I'm always saying that "if I'm having this problem, someone else must have it" and the solution would be there too.

Well, after searching, I couldn't find anything at all. I felted very alone for a moment! Lol!

Deactivating the Aero themes under Windows 7 seems to be a nice working temporary fix.

In fact, I have found this in Adobe knowledge base (dated 15th June!) which give the same solution :

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403039.html

I just hope Indesign Programmers will solve that issue in an upcoming update. All others CS5 products are working perfectly fine under Aero Themes, I can't see why Indesign couldn't be the same!

Let's face it, Aero Themes are not essentials, but Windows 7 do look very ugly without them!

Odd. I've used CS3-CS5 on Vista 64 and Win 7 64 with no problem with the Aero themes.

Must be something specific to some video cards.

As far as I know, Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator CS5 applications are working fine with Aero, excepted InDesign, for some odd reasons...

I saw the KB article but I can tell you that this is the first I've heard of this.

I've never seen it at all. What video card are you using? Do you have the most up to date drivers?
