Outline Fonts from PDF

Jul 15, 2010 12:53 PM

When I view a PDF file within Adobe Reader the finished artwork can be viewed in its entirety.  However, when I open the PDF in AI if the customer did not outline his fonts or provide me with a TTF I am unable to open and adjust the originally intended Artwork.  How can I open the file in AI so that it matches the view Reader provides?  I Feel like it is possible since the information is obviously somewhere in the file.

You need Acrobat so you can use the Transparency Flattener tools which allows you to outline the text.

    Workaround:

Link place the file into a blank Illustrator document.

Select the link, Object>flatten transparency with the convert text to outlines checked.

Variation: Copy the outlined text out using the above method

Open the original pdf in Illustrator (fonts will default)

Delete text and paste in place the outlined text.

    Pro: Retains transparency

Con: Both variants yield outlined text
