Something has to be wrong with a structure where one goal is the difference between a team (USA) being out of the World Cup and being the winner of your Group.
Such is the gap between success and failure.

England v Germany on Sunday afternoon. Penalties, any volunteers??
If it goes to penalties, this time England will win.
Jk3, the difference between winning and losing the World Series is often an inch or two. Winning by a goal or a run or a touchdown or a 3-pointer is what makes most sports so exciting at a high level.
The 33 and under generation is going mad for this US team here in the States, Big John. These "youngsters" grew up playing the game! Jk3 needs proof, so here's some:
Another huge party at our house in 12 hours!! My sons are both going to be at the match in South Africa!! I'm JEALOUS!!!!!!

Nope, you know what I mean...wrong structure... one goal and your (I know) out or top of your class doesn't work. Except in Disneyland.

Ya, everyone is watching, kind of natural don't ya think. It's called nationalism. But 'unfortunately' after today almost everyone will be hitting the snooze button till 2014. ![]()

And by "not these kids", I'm referring to an entire 1.5 generations of younger Americans who are into the sport and wear soccer jerseys to middle school and high school and beyond. Witness every match of this World Cup on HD, whereas in '78 not one match was televised in the U.S. It is pretty easy to figure when you <Jk3>follow the money</Jk3>! ![]()
Btw, I'm gutted by the poor U.S. performance today. After repeated slow starts, we failed to play with urgency and determination until about the 23rd minute, then we had to chase the game. Another slow start in overtime put us out . . .
And if we had to make two substitutions by the start of the 2nd half, that raises the question of Bradley's selection of his starting eleven. Against a very young and athletic team from Ghaha, and playing at 5000 feet, we needed those subs to come on later to bring fresh legs when we were tiring.
Meanwhile, go England tomorrow. I'll also cheer for the CONCACAF team south of our border vs. Argentina, although Messi & Co. will likely win. I think the overall winner will be either Argentina, Spain or Chile.
Did I mention I'm gutted?
England were laughably abysmal and well stuffed by a Germany Team that wanted to win. I hope they do they well in the next rounds.
As for the disallowed Fat Frank goal, Sepp Blatter needs to resign.
There's always next time, as they say.
I agree 100% on Sepp Blatter. But it isn't just goal-line technology to allow proper goals. Two helacious calls in the group stage brought two perfectly good U.S. goals back. I would suggest that each coach be allowed one or two challenges per game on goal issues only (allowed or disallowed) which would lead to the fourth official reviewing the video and overturning the call on the field only if there is clear and unambiguous proof that the call on the field was wrong.
The disallowed 2nd goal for England took wind out of their sails at the precise moment when they had grabbed the match by the tail. It was about to be the most exciting part of any WC match yet at 2-2, but the ref and the AR took it away with one terrible blown call.
Somehow Germany seem better without Ballack. I'm not sure why I think that, but they are clearly playing with cohesion, confidence and purpose.
John, did you see the final minute of overtime in Uruguay-Ghana? The debate rages at our house between "a penalty and a red card are sufficient punishment for the crime" to "the punishment should fit the crime and Suarez should have to forfeit one arm". I hated to see the last African team go out on such an obvious violation of the spirit of the rules, but then again Gyan should have converted!
I'm kind of glad our Brazilian exchange student went back home last week (after 10.5 months) because the tears would have made a mess! Can't wait for Germany-Argentina and the winner vs. Spain!

My daughter is in Spain for the month perfecting her excellent spanish, and she just happened to be there for both the semis and the Final. She wore her Torres LFC jersey at all appropriate times!
She would have had a great time!
Meanwhile:
"Liverpool will face the unfamiliar Rabotnicki from Macedonia or Armenian side Mika in the Europa League third qualifying round.
The Premier League outfit will play on 29 July at home and away on 5 August"
I should be able to get to that.
Great news today about Nando!! After all the talk about him moving on . . .

Yes, there's a lot at stake tonight, but the Boys in Red will triumph! The kick-off's 8:00 pm here, which is probably a week last Sunday lunchtime for those on t'other side of the planet! Or about 4½ hours from the time of posting this.

Chelsea's start to the Prem League is remarkable, even if they were playing lesser teams.
And the Manks carry on were they left off, relying on an own goal to salvage a point.
I was at Anfield last Thursday, when Roy fielded a very junior team. They really should have banged in three or four more, and it makes the trip to Turkey more difficult, though I expect they'll get the right result.
Some amusing comment here about last weekend's footy… http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/aug/23/five-things-we-lea rned-premier

Glad to see Nando is coming back to form, and didn't get reinjured!
RoyH was hoping he wouldn't play! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8953758.stm
And it was good see new boy Raul Meireles score too, for Portugal (4-4 with CYPRUS!!!!)
It's a right mess, and is now in the High Court. http://goo.gl/tYIU
And there appear to be two more increased bids for the club now, which may seem to support Hicks & Gillet case. But they arrived after the dispute began.
Sell up Hicks and Gillet - accept your mistakes and losses - go home and let someone else sort out your mess.

I'm just hoping that the court rules against them to allow NESV to step in and step up to allow LFC's recovery to begin.
They did!!!

Get the bubbly out!!
I've been watching those lads come out from the bottom of the mine. It's truly amazing, and top marks to everyone who never gave up hope and was determined to get them back into sunlight and fresh air with their loved ones. They've been exceptional, and it restores your faith in mankind.
And I believe there was a meeting of the Board of LFC at 8pm BST tonight, on the orders of the Judge (who I think is a closet Kopite!)
Hicks and Gillet are determined to cripple LFC.
See claim for damages and restraining order: http://www.scribd.com/doc/39284612/Liverpool-TRO
I see Mr Justice Floyd has said that "the ruling from Texas had no validity in England" and "given the owners until 1600 BST on Friday to withdraw their legal action in America, or face charges of contempt of court".
Also, "NESV, owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, also plan to make their own submission to the Dallas court to overturn the injunction obtained by Hicks and Gillett".
Meanwhile Peter Lim, withdrew his £320m bid, stating "The [Liverpool] board is intent on selling the club to NESV to the exclusion of all other parties, regardless of the merits of their bids".
This is real soap opera and to heighten the drama, it's Everton v Liverpool on Sunday at Goodison Park.

Phew! What a relief. As for the £1Bn (US$1.6Bn) damages, don't be silly. And stop pointing the finger at Rafa - what happened to the wonderful new stadium which was to be in place by now?
Everton v LFC tomorrow, a lunch-time kick-off UK time. A win and 3 points for LFC is what the doctor orders!
