Lightroom 3 64-bit Crashes on Import

Jul 25, 2010 10:48 PM

Every time I try to import pictures from my CF card reader, LR3 64-bit crashes and hangs the entire computer. I have never seen another program hang Windows 7 like this. Usually, when a program crashes you can always open task manager and kil it. Not this one. Every window hangs, and even CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing.

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Different CF cards

RAW (CR2) files

Any ideas?

John

I normally import all my photos using a USB connection on my 5D MkII, (and a 50D before that). Anyway, I thought I would try using the card reader as I am still new to LightRoom. I did not have any trouble importing 3 x 21MP images in one go using quite an old card reader, (Belkin F5U248). I also used a USB hub just to make things more difficult. I run a 64-bit Windows-7  p.c. with 12G of RAM. My suggestions are: (1) Is your card reader compatible with the USB port you are using, i.e. is it USB 1.0 or 2.0? Your motherboard may have a mixture of the 1.0 and 2.0 USB ports. Try plugging the card reader into a different USB port. (2) Is your card reader plugged directly into the motherboard or are you using a USB HUB? If, so, try using a direct USB connection on the motherboard. (3) Are you using a USB port on the front panel? If so, try a USB port on the back panel, (direct on the motherboard). (3) If you are using a USB HUB, is it current for Win-7? Try (borrow) someone else's HUB.

Good luck. Hope this helps. Bye. David.

I used to read my CF card through a reader plugged into the USB on the front of my Vista 64 machine.  It almost always hung on import to LR3.  I just tried the same process but through a USB port on the back of the computer and it worked flawlessly.  It was also very fast.  Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip... I have the same problem. I will change USB port and see what happens.
