Hi all,
I'm using Win2k on an older PC.
System was OK until updating Flash. (except Flash videos run kind of slow and stuttery
on this old 550MHz PC)
However, with the new version, Firefox just crashes when ever a Flash animation
is encountered.
Any thoughts on this? One thing that occurred to me is that my CPU does not
support SSE extensions, it's too old. Could that be the issue ?

I am typing this on a rather old PC with Windows 2000, Firefox 3.6, and Flash Player 10.1.53.64 - all works very nicely here.

Thanks for the info - where do you turn off acceleration globally? I was unable to find a setting.
This PC is from 1999, has an original ATI Radeon Vivo, and uses a driver from 2003. One of the last drivers
that worket with out MS dot-net intalled. I'm unable to update the driver further.
Second question - is it possible to render all videos on the lowest quality with a global setting?
If not, why not? It would be a perfect idea for those of us with older CPU's.

I tried the operation in IE6 instead of Firefox. I got a little more info.
It crashed with an "illegal instruction", 0xc000001d. I ask again:
Is Flash issuing an SSE instruction on a non-supported CPU?

Do you have the crashdumps? I could run WinDbg on it and find out for you. By default, Dr. Watson on Windows 2000 will generate them. Type drwtsn32 in Run and you will see the paths. Or you can also send me the log file you can view from there

Hi -
I've not been able to find a dump. Looking at the paths mentioned in drwtsn32 did not lead to anything.
I can reproduce it easily in IE6 - I get an error that can be seen in the event viewer.
However, in Firefox, no error is recorded. As far as I can see, a message from FF
saying it crashed is all that appears.
I'll look ariound a little more and see if I can capture some more info.
EDIT: I got sick of it... for now I've gone back to the previous release and all is
working again.

Sorry, I forgot Firefox's crash reporting. Can you type about:crashes into the address bar and get the most recent report ID?

Unfortnately Firefox reports the following:
"No crash reports have been submitted."
This is waht I gor from the Event Viewer re: IE 6: looks like Adobe's sloppy code doesn't
check to see if a CPU supports certain instruction before issuing them.
Application popup: IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error : The exception Illegal Instruction
An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction.
(0xc000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x05a62d77.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Reproduce the problem again, and when you see this dialog, click Cancel, that will invoke Dr. Watson.

It's a local setting - right-click on any Flash object, then select Settings...

Sorry, I don't have the answer to that question. This is a user-to-user forum, and naturally our technical knowledge is limited.

I too have an old cpu, Athlon Thunderbird. Mine does not support SSE instructions. FWIW I did see in release notes somewhere that the flash update is intended to work with Athlons as slow as 600 MHz (no mention of SSE; there were two classes of Athlon's but I don't know if any non-SSE ones were made as slow as 600 MHz)
I use XP. I've have problems with the latest Firefox plugin and playback on some video sites. Instead of playing at one size it sometimes goes into a frenzy of bouncing between proper size and smaller. http://picasaweb.google.com/sherip99/Flash_updt_vs_firefox#
The troubleshooting help I got on this forum didn't help, so I've been switching to the previous version of the Firefox plugin when I want to view problematic sites.
Regards,
Sheri

Thanks for the info - my cpu is slower than yours, its a K6-3+ @ 550MHz.
It does pretty good browsing the net except for flash. I've been unable, so far,
to get a dump or any further diagnostics.
The ony info I have, when encountering the error in IE6, is that an illegal
instruction was issued.
Regarding the nonsense of the video switching sizes - I saw that with the old
version when viewing video on Youtube. So much so, that I gave up trying to use
this PC for such tasks.
Flash is horrible and the control it gives to the user is horrible,
All the control is on the hands of the content owner.
I asked before if it were possible to default the "quality" setting to "low"
on a global basis. This would provide some relief for those with
slow CPU's - but it seems Adobe's philosophy is somewhat pig-headed.
They never address or acknowledge issues like these.

I too saw the same behavior with the older plugin version at youtube, but only with some videos. With the new plugin, I get the behavior at additional sites I frequent (such as zaplive.tv) that worked with the older plugin version. Surprisingly, both at youtube and these other sites, I did/do not get the behavior with old or new versions in ie 8.

Did you try to reproduce this again, as I asked?

Yes, but I wasn't able to get a dump or log file.
It's possible I missed something, please provide step by step instructions and
I'll try again. I have FF 3.6 or IE6 available to test with.

When you see this dialog, click Cancel to invoke the debugger which is by default Dr. Watson. You likely clicked OK which as described in the dialog just terminated the application:
"IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error : The exception Illegal Instruction
An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction.
(0xc000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x05a62d77.

What dialog are you talking about ?
That info I posted doesn't come from a dialog.
It was copy & paste from the event log.

Usually, when this is logged to the event log, a similar dialog was also displayed. This is the dialog I am referring to. Reproduce the problem, and when you see this dialog, click the Cancel button instead of the OK button.

Well I got a little further. IE6 crashed then asked me if I
wanted to debug, send a report to MS , or don't send.
I selected debug, and MS visual C++ opened giving me the location
and code dump. What can I do with this ?
drwtsn32 did not get invoked.

Oh, you have Visual C++ installed. Which version are you using? Did you record what instruction the debugger was pointing at? If it is DB XXh, give me the next few lines.

Yeah I do, I took a C++ class 3 or 4 years ago, and never uninstalled it It's version 6. I'll get you a screen print,
perhaps it will help?
