Real proxy editing - a new (?) method

Sep 2, 2009 7:15 PM

Whenever proxy editing is discussed here, reference always seems to be made to an FAQ outlining a method which doesn't really involve proper proxy files.  So I've devised a very simple method whereby actual proxy files are used for editing, then for the final render the real files are substituted.  I don't know whether I've simply not found a previous mention here of such a method, or whether my suggestion is actually original, but in case I've indeed come up with something new, I'll outline how it can be done.   And if it's old hat, please ignore!

My reason for needing a proxy files method is that here at least, my quad core XP PC does not like using 720p files from my Panasonic GH1 in Premiere Elements 7.  It goes very slow and tends to hang when simply putting the clips on the timeline.  It's not too bad with full HD AVCHD, but even so it's obvious (and well known) that such footage adds a big load to the system.  Perhaps in the next version Adobe will add 'Cuda' support so that some of the load can be handled by the Nvidia card, but meanwhile, working with AVCHD can become a problem even on a reasonably powerful system if the project is complex.

So the idea is that I want to use lower-resolution mpeg2 files for the editing, and then use the real AVCHD files just for the final output.

I have to admit that to use this method, you need to use a third party program to create the proxy files in the first place.  There is at least one freeware AVCHD > MPEG2 program "Free AVCHD Converter" at http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html which seems to be ok but a bit slow.  Elecard also do AVCHD conversion software, and several other programs are available - personally I've found that Cyberlink's MediaShow Espresso does a very fast job on a system with Nvidia Cuda, and it's very simple to use.  Whatever software you use, it has to be able to take the batch of files you want to work with and convert them to files in the desired format with the same name but a different extension.  Using MediaShow, for instance, to convert the AVCHD files here, the source files are named (by the camera) 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS etc, and the converted versions are call 00000.mpg, 00001.mpg, 00002.mpg and so on.  Remember that you won't be using the transcoded files for final output, so if their quality is a bit reduced it doesn't matter.

Method:-

1 - Using the third party software, create proxy versions of your original.  The converted files should be in a format the PE7 can handle (of course) and which will not impose a big processing load on your PC, while providing adequate quality when you are editing.  Here, 720x576 mpeg2 16:9 is a good compromise between appearance and performance.

2 - Now start up Premiere Elements, and choose a project preset which would be what you would use with the normal files, not the proxy files.  Import the proxy files, not the real ones, and edit in the usual way.

3 - When you've finished editing, save the project in the usual way and exit.

Now you need to replace the proxy files in the project file with the real ones in order to output the completed project.

4 - Open the .prel file for your project using the windows "Notepad" program (or even better, a program like "Notepad++" which is a more powerful freeware alternative that will do the replacement much quicker if the project is complex).

5 - Using the "Replace" function in Notepad (or alternative software) replace the extension of the proxy files with the extension of the real files.  In my case I'd be replacing .mpg with .MTS so that the project will use the original AVCHD files.  Now save and exit (it would be prudent to use "save as" so that you are not over-writing your edited project in case something is amiss).

6 - Then open the de-proxied project, and use "share" to output as required in the usual way.  Here I find that some kind of preliminary processing tends to happen before you see much movement of the progress bar - probably PE7 is having to redo some stuff that it did with the proxy files now that it "sees" the real files in the project.  This is a situation where the freeware utility "Bmem" - http://badmofo.org/bmem/ - is very handy because it shows you that something's going on, and it takes up very little space on screen.  I have it running all the time and couldn't live without it!

This procedure has been tested a couple of times on my system with fairly simple test projects and seems to work.  Your Mileage May Vary - I would strongly suggest you try it first on a test project before you commit a lot of time and effort to using it "for real".

What happens if you need some type of special effects like object or text movement across the screen to a certain point?

Will the X/Y locations hold up through proxy editing?  Or will they have to change due to the change in pixel size that may occur when down-resing to a proxy file?  My guess is "No," but are there any best practices to get around this?

    Thanks!

Personally when ever I have done this I have just done text and graphics after I changed back to the original format.  If I were to guess, I would say that the positions would be different.  You would also have to make sure that they are the correct resolution for your project.

All you have to do is change the extensions with notepad.  Say you created low res MPG files to edit with and they are named 0001.mpg, 0002.mpg, etc.  You go into notepad and replace all .mpg with .mts .  When you open Premiere it will say that it cannot find your files and that is fine, just click "no" or "skip" or what ever it says so that you do not relink them at that time.  When premiere opens it will show all your file names but not be linked to anything.  You can then select all the files from one card and link them manually, then do the same for the next card (assuming multiple cards, if only one card it only takes one time).  Then just let premiere conform and create your wave forms and you should be good to go.

Well your AVCHD clips should not have 6 chanels of audio?

Can you import your AVCHD clips into Premiere just by them selves without trying to link them to any previous clips?

I just tried a few times with several different files and it all worked great for me.  Below is what I did.

    1) Open up TMPGE (Software I use to convert to MPG)

    2) Select my AVCHD video clips that I want to convert

    3) Convert above clips to MPEG 2 video

    4) Open Premiere Pro

    5) Set up an AVCHD timeline

    6) Import all my MPG clips into Premiere

    7) Drop MPG video clips into AVCHD timline (They only fill up about 50% of the screen but that is just fine)

    8) Save project and Close Premiere

    9) Right click on the Project File

    10) Righ click in an empty space and select Paste (that puts a copy in the same folder)

    11) Right click on the "COPY" of the project and select Open With Notepad

    12) Then go to "Edit" then "Replace"

    13) In the "Find What" box type .mpg

    14) In the "Replace with" box type .mts

    15) Click on "Replace All"

    16) Close Notepad and select "Yes" to save changes.

    17) Open the Copy of your Premiere Project.

    18) When the box opens up that says it cannot find your project files just select "Skip All"

    19) Once your project is open find the media files that you want to replace and highlight all the clips

    20) Right click on one of the files and select "Link Media".

    21) At the top of the box it will list the file name that it wants you to find.  So if it is asking for 0000.mts make sure that is the file that you click on.

    22) When you click on the specified file it will automatically link all the following files provided that that are all named correctly.

I tried this just a few min ago with several different types of clips.  Going from MPEG 2 to AVCHD and Visa Versa.

I hope you can get your troubles figured out soon.

I don't think that it should matter as this was started by someone using PrE.  I just adapted it to PrPro.  I have never used Elements but I would think that the work flow should be very similar.  Check back at the top of this thread and make sure that you follow those steps since those where done with Elements.

You don't happen to know how I can 'lose' four of my tracks do you.

Is there a conversion I can do that would get me back to basic stereo?

Not sure how you ended up with 6 audio tracks anyway.  Can you post a screen shot of your timeline with your MPEG video in it.  Maybe that will help me see what is going on.

OK, one thing I just realized is that your camcorder records with 5.1 surround sound (hence the 6 audio channels).  I am really at a loss here.  I am going to shoot you a PM with my email address and if you want to you can send me a small AVCHD file to play with.  You can use something like www.yousendit.com or something similar.  If you want to take the time to send it I will see if I can figure out a way to get it to work.  Now the only thing is, that I am using PrPro, so results may differ...

OK, thanks for sending me a file.  Below are a bunch of pics of the step by step that I went through.  Again I am using Premiere Pro CS4 so things may work a bit different for you, but hopefully this will help out.

First thing I did was convert the original AVCHD footage to a .MPG file to edit with.

Then I started a premiere project with sequence settings that match the original footage.  So in this case it was AVCHD 1080i at 25fps.

I imported my newely created .mpg file into Premiere and put it on the timeline.

Notice that it is a .mpg file and that it does not fill up the whole screen.  I also circled the 5.1 in Audio 4 which will come into play later.

So I saved the project and closed it.  I then opened up the project file with notepad and replaced the .mpg with .mts and saved the file.

Double clicked on the project file to launch premiere and this window comes up.

Notice at the top is says "Where is the file"

I double clicked on the original  .mts file that I wanted to replace the lower res .mpg file with and got the following error (Normally I would not double click here but I had a feeling)

Which is the same error that you are getting.

    I clicked OK

    and then clicked "SKIP"

NOTE* - Normally I would click "Skip All" but in this case there was only one file.  If there are multiple files and you just click "Skip" it will continue to ask you for each one.

After clicking "Skip" Premiere opens up and looks like this.

I right clicked on the .mts file in my BIN and selected "Link"

(NOTE - if you have multiple files highlight all of them for particular card and then select link)

Notice at the top is says "Link Media"

Just double clicked on my .mts file and it appears in Premiere no prob.

BUT it puts the audio on same stero line as the previous .mpg file.

Here you can see what it looks like if I just drag the clip from the Bin to the Timeline.

I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not when exporting your final project.  Obviously it would not be 5.1 surround, but that may not matter to you.  If that part is important you could go back and manually replace the audio clips from the .mts files.

I hope this helps you out some.  I hope that you are just getting that error because you are tying to link the media before Premiere actually opens.

but tried your method anyway and got as far as this

After clicking "Skip" Premiere opens up and looks like this.

I right clicked on the .mts file in my BIN and selected "Link"

(NOTE - if you have multiple files highlight all of them for particular card and then select link)

When I right click I don't get the option to "Link" My options are

    Update

    Delete

    Show Details

    Show Media type

    Stack (image only)

    Scene Group (video only)

    Remove Tag

    Remove album

    Run Auto analyzer

    Create Instant Movie

Those above in grey are greyed out

and I don't get the "Link Media" at the top.

    So.. no further really.

I'm wondering if its  Premiere versions thing  - PrE8 vs Pro

Tomorrow when I get in the office I will put together a PDF of them and email them to you.  Not that it will probably help, but you never know.

It must be something with PreE.

I came across a YouTube tutorial on Proxy Editing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WK0sX75c4E&feature=share&list=FLRu3nwW -lWp9ZaW9ZH6bTfg

It shows Premiere Pro, but I think that all, or at least most steps will work in PrE, as well.

Might be useful to some, if they have an underpowered computer, and AVCHD Clips.

Here is an Adobe KB Article on "Offline Editing" with PrPro: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91c f0b1038518aef7-7f74a.html

Much of that technique can work in PrE, as well.
