Can't get Pixel Bender to install in CS5

Aug 12, 2010 5:06 PM

The Adobe extension manager for CS5 keeps quitting, before I can try to get it to install pixel bender.  I'm not sure if there are other adobe software programs that I need to purchase and install to get pixel bender to install.  I've tried on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro and I'm having the same results.

Since you are running Extension Manager for CS5, I will assume that you are trying to install the Pixel Bender plug-in for Photoshop CS5.  The only requirement is to have Photoshop CS5 installed.  If so, please provide additional information:  did you download the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the plug-in?  do you have Photoshop CS5 32-bit or 64-bit installed?  do you also have CS4 products installed on the system?

    Thanks,

    Elba

    Hi Rich,

Can you verify that Extension Manager CS5 is the version that is attempting to launch?  There are instances when Extension Manager CS4 and Extension Manager CS5 are both installed when the CS4 version will attempt to launch when installing the Pixel Bender plug-in for CS5.  From the documentation on Labs:

"If Extension Manager CS4 is launched when you double-click the MXP file,  you need to launch Extension Manager CS5 from the Start > All  Programs menu on Windows and Applications/Adobe Extension Manager CS5 on  the Mac OS and manually "Install Extension" from within Adobe Extension  Manager CS5."

Can you try this to see if it resolves the launch error?

    Thanks,
    Elba

We deliver the Pixel Bender plugin for Photoshop only as an Extension Manager package; we do not distribute the individual components. I'd like to know more about the Extension Manager crash so we can try to get it resolved. Would you please provide crash reports, System Profiler dumps, and any relevant Console output for the machines on which the Extension Manager is crashing. Thanks.

Thanks. You could post the PDF on tinyurl and then copy the link to a post in this thread. Otherwise, you could mail the PDF to pixelbender-exchange-admin at adobe dot com.

FYI: Here are some other threads discussing Extension Manager startup crashes:

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/644022

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/644961

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/648390

The crashes are not identical to the crash you are seeing. However, you may want to try some of the suggestions offered on those threads. I also suggest that you temporarily uninstall any non-standard Mac OS X extensions, such as input managers (SIMBL for example), that you might have installed in order to see if doing so alleviates the Extension Manager problem.

I am having exactly the same problem with my iMac.  I tried both the 64 bit and the 32 bit versions but experienced the same problem with both.  Extensions Manager unexpectedly quits before anything happens. I have sent in the crash reports every time so there must be a big stack of them somewhere.  Please let me know what I can do beyond the help provided on this thread, because i have tried everything suggested here as well, to no avail.  Thanks.

    Hi rmherzog,

Have you tried the solution mentioned by 'unique_screenname_here'? There are couple of Extension Manager CS5 unexpectedly quiting issues which are related with Mac OS X extensions in the  folder '/Library/InputManagers/'. If Extension Manager CS5 still quits unexpectedly after you applied the solution, could you post the crash log and system profile?

    Dear Chengyon,

There is nothing in my Extension Manager folder so I can't remove anything.  I have tried everything suggested and that I can think of myself to get it to install.  Pixel Bender looks like it could be really helpful to me if I could only get it working.  How do I find the "Crash Report" so I can send it to you?  Thanks for your kind help.

    Best,
