Hi,
I've ensured that the page doc type is that which is supported, AND that it's the first line of code.
I have the following doctype:-
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" >
Yet the error in Internet Explorer (only) persists:-
You cannot edit or duplicate this page.
The page doctype in not supported
Contact your web developer
I have also tried
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
The page does not contain framesets.
This error does not occur in Firefox nor Safari however my client has only Internet Explorer available so this represents quite a pain in the proverbial for both my client and for me.
Can someone please explain how to resolve ?
Many thanks
Tommy - it is not top secret but I'd rather not post a link here to my client's site.
I have no issue sending you the link via PM - in fact I tried to yesterday but the Adobe site seemed to be experiencing issues so it was not sent. I can send on to you if you like.
An update:
Corey kindly took a look at the link I sent him and noticed that I had an unnecessary space within the doc type declaration. I removed this along with some mootools library references in the head of the page and reuploaded. The situation is unchanged. When clicking CTRL+E I get prompted for the sign in. ICE accepts the login and the ICE menu etc appears. But when I click on "Edit Page" the error message appears as before re wrong doc type.
Your includes files appear to be outdated (for starters). To correct this and update to the latest version of files follow these steps:
You should receive a message saying that files needed for editing your site have been copied to your site folder.
See if that works out for you.. Also of note, I would suggest using an absolute path to your includes folder such as:
<script src="http: //www.yoursite.com/includes/ice/ice.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
Also, change your character set to
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
Explanation for that located in this thread:
Question marks replace apostrophes and quote marks incontextediting
Good Luck,
-Tommy
Adobe InContext Editing is ONLY supported for the US version and does NOT support other top level domains other than .com
If you are using another such as .ru, .biz, .cz, .ie and so on... ICE may not work as expected.
I believe it may be possible if you could get one of these Adobe engineers to write you a specific js file for your includes.
Good Luck... sorry ![]()

Hi Dan ,
Thanks for your reply - the DOCTYPE declaration is the first thing in the page so I cannot understand why it's being ignored. Perhaps it is a problem with the domain not being a .com as Tommy has suggested (thanks Tommy for helping also)
I've sent you the link via PM . Many thanks for looking into it.
Hey Tommy,
Thanks for that - I haven't been able to do much else on it - I was waiting for Dan to get back to my PM before I did anything else.
In the meantime Corey has got in touch and has asked for publisher rights - I've granted this and I'll post here as soon as I have an update to the situation.
Thanks to Corey also for looking into this for me.
Cool then... sometimes you just have to stir the pot a bit here to get it cooking.
Have you tried moving this site to another server all together ( a different hosting company preferably ) and see if that same code works there.
Like I said, it worked for me. I sent the code off to another guy and it worked on his server as well. Makes me to believe that is the issue.
Two servers are Dreamhost & GoDaddy (as I stated in other threads, I prefer to test on them)
Either way, good luck.. let us know how it turns out.

Hi Tommy,
Corey very kindly took a look and came back to me with pretty much the same suggestions as you provided.
A combination of changing the character encoding to uft-8 and also re-ordering the meta tags did the trick.
I've tested and am now able to edit in Internet Explorer without issue !
Thanks so very much to you and also to Corey.
May the good karma flow freely !
Well, good then.. glad I could be of assistance.
I was nudging you toward the _draft issue, but thought if I pointed out the "before" & "after", that you would realize the two versions of the same file.
There's one less headache for you anyway.
Any other issues, don't hesitate to post.
-Tommy
I am having this problem, too. My header file has the doctype:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
This wasn't a problem a couple of months ago. Everything was working fine. I use this for a small, very poor school and the teachers are hoping to get another school year out of it. I really don't want to switch from ICE to something else until I have no other option. The web site is www.saintjohncatholicsc.org.
The first several lines in my header.php file are:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:ice="http://ns.adobe.com/incontextediting">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
