Thanks for the tips regarding replacing the entire Adobe Acrobat (application) folder with a backup copy (Time Machine). This worked for me.

While I am not surpised that Adobe arn't responding very well, big companies are good at doing this - I am surprised that the update was released with a critical flaw and not immediately resolved - particularly as this is a tool used by professionals and means lost time / productivity.

I dread the thought of having to reinstall everything all over again, especially since this was ADOBE's fault. I find their cavalier attitude towards this entire incident rather unbecoming of them. Perhaps Steve Jobs was right in dumping Flash... I think a collective lawsuit for losses sustained due to the Adobe's ineptness needs to be explored.

There use to be a facebook page on adobe problems and when adobe seemed to ignore request, they would get to work fixing problems because facenook is out there for world to see. They didn't like the world to see all their warts. My suggestion is if you don't get satifaction  other ways , to look up this facebook page and post.

The reinstall worked for us in Mac OSX 10.5.8 but it doesn't make us feel better that our production was shut down for 3 hours this a.m because of this idiocy.

Adobe customer support is another issue. The issue is: THERE ISN'T ANY! The company should care more about those of us who have problems instead of sending us to a call center in Pakistan.

8.2.4 was really brilliant of you guys. Did anyone actually try it to see if it worked BEFORE releasing this turd?

Here's what I did yesterday that is working so far:

1-Followed suggestion about Time Machine combined with Adobe support page information and restored and replaced these folders:

Note: This folder path refers to the  Library folder at the root level of the startup disk, not the Library  folder that is inside a user's Home folder.

    • In the Finder, navigate to /Library/Application Support/Adobe
      • Acrobat
      • Adobe PCD
      • Adobe PDF

    2-After restoring and replacing those, I then restored/replaced 8.2.3.

    So far so good.

    Good luck everyone!

Adobe need not worry -- the only thing more inept than them is their user community.

    New Acrobat 8.2.4 Update

    Updated KB document:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html

    Issue

Macintosh Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh is unable to launch after applying the Acrobat 8.2.4 Update via the auto-update mechanism in the product.

This issue appears only to impact only the version of Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh that is included with the Adobe Creative Suite 3.

    Solution

Adobe has released a new Acrobat 8.2.4 Update via the auto-update mechanism for Adobe Acrobat 8.2.3 (CS3) for Macintosh. Adobe recommends that you check for updates by choosing Help>Check for Update from the Adobe Acrobat menu bar.  You will be prompted to install all Adobe Acrobat product updates to version 8.2.4.

If you have an Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh user, have already installed the Acrobat 8.2.4 update and are experiencing the launch issue, Adobe recommends that you reinstall Adobe Acrobat 8.0.0  from the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installation media, and then check for updates by choosing Help>Check for Update from the Adobe Acrobat menu bar.  You will be prompted to install all Adobe Acrobat product updates to version 8.2.4.

    Additional information

If your installation of Adobe Acrobat 8.x for Macintosh was not part of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installation you can manually update your application via the Downloads Acrobat for Macintosh Downloads  page.

If you have Adobe Reader 8.x for Macintosh installed, you can manually update update your application via the Downloads Adobe Reader for Macintosh Downloads page

    All the best.

So, now I have to get out my installation downloads, re-install, and sit around waiting for all the updates, in order to get the software I paid for to work again after being disabled due to a situation caused by Adobe after installing their recommended security patch?

The Internet has a word for that...

    FAIL!

Adobe screws things up and then leaves it to the customer to clean up the mess.  How difficult is it to release an update that would correct the problem without forcing users to reinstall a 2-year old piece of software and upgrading it multiple times to get back to where they were a week ago before Adobe messed things up?

it is even worse, if the reinstallation does not work!!!!!!!!! There should be some kind of regress.

Maybe it leads to use open source instead of not working professional stuff

I had the same problem with Acrobat pro not starting, and uninstalled it, intending to install it back to the old version from disk. My disk wont work (it was CS3) and Adobe website won't allow me to download Acrobat as my original purchase was on disk, not a download. Does anyone know where I can get a download or a disk that works? This disk is readable, but doesn't launch the install process. Any ideas, anyone?

    Not so fast ...

I reinstalled from original media, as instructed. My 8.0.0 works fine.

Went to UPDATE in the help menu ...

I am now looking at a dialog box that says:

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.3 Update failed to install.

    What now?

Sorry ... 8.1.0  (not 8.0.0 - duh) works fine, but throws the error as noted above when the upgrade install is attempted.

I have now UNinstalled Adobe Acrobat Pro, and am trying to reinstall "clean" ...

All of this is on o/s 10.5.8

I was able to successfully apply the 8.2.4 update manually by running "Help > Check for updates" from Adobe Acrobat 8 (part of CS3 Suite) - everything is working fine now.

This thread is labeled as "ANSWERED" --- that is NOT TRUE!

Many of us have found it impossible to upgrade, after re-installing 8.0.0 from the distribution disk for CS3. My error message is:

Adobe Acrobat 8.1.3 Update failed to install

What is the remedy for THAT?!?!?!

Folks, if you are getting an error that the product has been modified and the patch can not be applied, in this case- create another Admin user, log out and login as the new admin user and then run patch either by downloading form the site of from Help->Check for update.

Please have a look at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407621.html . THis has worked for me in past.

Manually you can download all patched from : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform= Macintosh

Nice advice, but Adobe has to do better than that!

Heck, why not simply recommend that we all buy CS4?

That is my concern.  The rest of CS3 is working fine.  I don't want to risk messing that up.  I can use Preview for now, rather than Acrobat.  I don't want to risk messing up the rest of my CS3 installation.

How about Adobe release a patch that fixes the faulty 8.2.4 that's already been installed rather than forcing us all to practice computer voodoo in the hopes of getting things working again?  It's not like any of us did anything to mess up our installations.  We didn't try installing some wacky third-party add-on or plugin or something.  All we did was install an Adobe recommended security patch.  And now Adobe wants us to go through all sorts of Rube Goldberg machinations to restore our software to working order?

My installation is working fine.  When this first happened, I uninstalled Acrobat 8 and reinstalled to 8.0.0 from CS3 disk.  Instead of allowing the Adobe Updater to mess things up (as it has in the past), I downloaded all the updates from the download updates page. I took the time (30-45 minutes, maybe?) to manually update Acrobat back to 8.2.3.  I did not have any issue updating.

When the fixed 8.2.4 patch arrived, I saw it worked for those lucky enough to be back to 8.2.3.  The update worked for me as well.

At no time did I allow Adobe Updater to update Acrobat for me.

I experienced this problem last week and was able to take my Macbook back to 8.2.3 by copying the Acrobat application folder from my iMac (where I hadn't done the 8.2.4 update).

Since I knew that worked and I could do it again if necessary, I did a "check for updates" in Acrobat on my Macbook just now and was offered the revised 8.2.4 patch. I installed it, and everything seems to be working fine. I'm going to install 8.2.4 on my iMac now (right after making sure 8.2.3 is on a Time Machine backup).

I guess they never tested this update on a CS3 system. That's one way to try to get us to upgrade - keep releasing updates that break our CS3 software.

I used a cd to reinstall 8.0.0, and then manually updated thru 8.1.5 ....

But when updating for 8.1.6, the patch fails because it says I changed something or deleted a plug in or something.

    I did nothing -- I was on a roll.

Why did it swallow 8.1.5 but not 8.1.6 ??

    THANK YOU ADOBE!

    I cheated.

I have an old G5 with an stale (unupdated) copy of Acrobat 8 on it. I updated it from 8.1.4 to 8.1.6 and then it did a GIANT update all the way to 8.2.4.

I was excited - I thought that Adobe had posted a cumulative update.

So I went back to my MBP, and tried it ... and it insisted on doing 8.1.6 and failing ...

So I COPIED the apps from the G5

    And it even fooled UPDATER.

Maybe this is not a permanent solution, but it seems to be behaving properly.

Pity the poor user who does not have a second computer or Time Machine (backing up apps).

Adobe is still on the hook.

    a. I never said I was following Adobe's prescribed remedy.  I'm following MY remedy.  Adobe didn't tell us about using Time Machine or copying a known good copy from another machine as a remedy either.  But I see those remedies are working for some users.

    b. By running the patching application yourself instead of letting Adobe Updater do it.  (Adobe Updater is invoked when you tell Acrobat or any other CS app to look for and apply updates.)

    1. Download the appropriate .dmg file from the updates page.
      http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform= Macintosh
    2. Open said .dmg file.
    3. Run application found in the disk image.
    4. It will attempt to find the Acrobat application you wish to update and ask you to confirm its location.

Hi, I am also a victim of the now infamous  8.2.4 update. I tried the option I read in one of these threads that has  us move 3 folders from the library Adobe menu and re-input the serial #  on launch, but it won't accept it as valid (? - it's a legally purchased  cd).

Moreover, I don't even have the actual disk for CS3 because  it's in our main office in a different city (Rome) and I am in Milan...

    What  can I do?

Any chance of tricking Acrobat into accepting the new  (and fixed) 8.2.4 update over the current (bad) 8.2.4?

    Thank you!

There is now a fix for customers who have already installed the Adobe Acrobat (CS3) for Macintosh Updated 8.2.4.

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html

Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh: Unable to launch Acrobat after applying security update

If your system has Adobe Acrobat 8 which came with any of the CS3 suite and updating on Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh started giving you “Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component...” as described in the kb article http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html , the utility can be used to patch the corrupt files in Acrobat 824 that are causing the failure.

    File Information

    Filename: AcroFix824_Delivery.dmg

    Usage Notes

    1. Double click  ‘AcroFix824_Delivery.dmg’ to mount the disc image
    2. Open the mounted disc image and double click AcroFix824 utility to run it
    3. Browse to ‘Adobe Acrobat Professional’ application to be patched from ‘Choose a File dialog’
    4. Enter the admin credentials in authenticate dialog
    5. Wait for the files to be patched
    6. Click OK when the utility notifies with ‘Patched Successfully’ message

    Additional information

If your installation of Adobe Acrobat 8.x for Macintosh was not part of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installation you can manually update your application via the Downloads Acrobat for Macintosh Downloads  page.

If you have Adobe Reader 8.x for Macintosh installed, you can manually update update your application via the Downloads Adobe Reader for Macintosh Downloads page.

Well, yeah, but I've already updated to 8.2.4. It's broken. I don't know if there is a NEW 8.2.4, but Acrobat thinks it's updated.

Thank you! After wading through dozens of posts, and possible fixes on these forums, this quick and easy patch solved the problem:

    ‘AcroFix824_Delivery.dmg’
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html

No need to uninstall, reinstall, move any file or folder. Easy. Done.

I do not understand why this information is not plastered all over these forums. I am trying to spread the word.

I updated mine last night using my original CS3 disk as suggested. Uninstalled Acrobat Pro 8.2.4 and reinstalled and all went well.

Haven't done any updates yet so I'm still at 8.0.0. Works just fine.

Only took about 45 minute on an older G4 running 10.4.11.

    Thank goodness it went well.

I gotta say, this was a very good support experience.  One I didn't need to actively participate in.

I found the forum, found the issue, subscribed to the thread and watched the resolution roll in... and from the manufacturer nonetheless, not a hack generated by a desperate user community.

    Nice work Adobe
