Rollover Slidelet Issue

Aug 23, 2010 9:59 AM

I'm trying to create a rollover slidelet. The slidelet seems to work ok except for one thing. A small box with an "X" in it appears in the top-right corner of the slidelet, as shown below. What is it? More important: How can I get rid of it?

    Hi,

If you click on the Rollover Slidelet->Go to the PI->And set the "Stick Slidelet" to ON, then on clicking the Rollover Slidelet, the slidelet comes up and if you want to close it, you could click on this "X" button. If this cross is overlapping your area, increase the dimensions on the slidelet.

    Thanks,

    Sikandar

    Hi Morton

I see Sikandar explained why you see the X. What wasn't explained was that you have no means of suppressing it.

I've seen many others ask if there is a way to prevent the X from appearing. Unfortunately at present there is no way I'm aware of.

If you would like to add your voice to those that would love to see Adobe give us an option for controlling whether we see the X or not, please consider submitting a Wish Form to ask for the ability. (Link is in my sig)

    Cheers... Rick

Rick is right, unfortunately there is no way of suppressing the "x" icon:(.

    Thanks,

I made a small project that shows the difference between a normal and a sticky slidelet. It shows exactly what's the problem with the closebox. In the example you can also see what happens when you add an animation to a slidelet.

Of course a alse made a bug-report to Adobe.

    Hi Chris

    Couple of things here.

You may want to correct a typo on your page:

    tmp1.PNG

The verbiage you are using in the second example is suggesting that there is a bug with the slidelet. I'm not sure I'd classify the second "sticky" example as a real issue. It may not be the behavior some would like to see, but it's certainly behaving as I've always known Slidelets to behave.

Here's the deal. Let's examine the word slidelet. Sort of implies a "mini slide" doesn't it? Certainly we are able to insert Buttons or Click Boxes (or even Text Entry Boxes) on regular slides to keep them paused indefinitely. But we can't insert such objects inside a Slidelet. I'm unsure of the technical reasons why, but the fact is we just can't. At least at the present version 5. The slidelet was timed to present for five seconds. It is doing exactly that. The presentation doesn't care if the mouse is hovering the slidelet to keep it visible or if it has been clicked to keep it visible. It just has the "self destruct" timer set for five seconds. Fortunately you are able to adjust the timing to be what you want. You could make it 60 or 90 seconds if you like. And if you did that, it might provide the illusion that it is remaining on the screen indefinitely. In that case, the close box would make total sense. They may interact with the slidelet areafor perhaps 20 seconds, then wish to dismiss the slidelet.

I'm not sure what you are saying about the animations.

    Cheers... Rick

    Hello,

You cannot attach files anymore to postings. Please use the small still camera button to insert screenshots.

    Hi Morton

If you want to send me the Word document I'll be happy to make it available.

There should be no need to ever make a slide as long as you have (999 seconds) not sure why you made it that long. Remember, Buttons and Click Boxes will pause a slide until your user commands it to move. I sense you timed it that long because you wanted the rollover to remain visible? Not sure. If you want the rollover to remain visible, you could have the slide timed for 3 seconds and pausing at 1.5. Then just use a rollover image.

    Cheers... Rick

    Hi again Morton

Ummm, please excuse the post because I know it will sound a bit snarky regardless of how I word it. I just want you to know I'm really not trying to be snarky. OK?

Captivate was designed as a Software Demonstration, Simulation and eLearning platform. Your description of why you are presently frustreated seems to be that you are finding major faults with it because you are trying to use it for something which it was never intended. This is similar to purchasing a band saw, then later complaining because it doesn't neatly and efficiently slice through the patio paving stones that were purchased.

I understand that you don't wish to employ any Buttons or Click Boxes. But sometimes we have to employ a feature for a specific reason. In your case the reason would appear to be that you need the slide to just pause and wait for rollover interactions to occur. And if you use a Click Box, it will do exactly that. This is probably the very reason that the development team created one of the actions to be that of "no action" when clicked. So the only reason for having the Click Box would be to pause the movie when you want.

So you pause the slide with the Click Box, then have all the Rollover Captions or Rollover Images you want.

    Cheers... Rick

    Hi Morton

Well, the mail wasn't from Adobe. It was from another forum participant named Lilybiri. I believe her actual name is Lieve and she lives somewhere in Belgium.

Further, I'm a volunteer forum moderator. As a moderator, I have some capabilities others don't generally have. Such as posting an attachment.

I'm not able to upload images using the camera icon. I sent a message to support about this, but they've not yet come up with a solution. Was wondering if anyone has a suggestion.

    1. I click the Camera icon, and the insert dialog appears.

    2. I choose From Your Computer, and click the Browse button.

    3. I navigate to the file, select it and click the Open button.

    4. The image does not appear in my message, so I click the Upload button.

    5. After clicking the Upload button, the dialog becomes blank except for the "x" close button.

    6.  If I close the dialog and try again to upload my file by clicking the  Camera icon, if I click on the Uploaded Files tab, I see my uploaded  file,

    7. If I click the Insert button, the following message appears:

"An  error occured trying to retrieve data from server. Please try again in a  few minutes. Error code: tinyMCEpopup is not defined."

I've  tried this over and over again, on different days, and on both Firefox  and Internet Explorer, and with both JPG and GIF -- always with the same results.

I updated the example with the 'workarounds' for the unwanted closebox in a non-sticky Rollover Slidelet and the timing-issue on the sticky Rollover Slidelet (the 999 seconds solution): http://www.dorna.nl/?p=428#more-428

One way to get rid of the [X] button is to stretch your slidelet in width or height so that the [X] button is outside of the visible stage area.

You can also check out my widget HideSlideletClosebox (Cp5) from http://www.dorna.nl/?p=540

It's brand new, please let me know if it works...
