I've spent ages looking around help screens & forums here and I see that other people are having problems with epub files created from 'Export for Digital Editions' (so it must be possible to make an epub file), but I can't even access this option as it is greyed out from my File menu. I have InDesign CS4 6.0.5 installed on my PC with Windows XP op sys.
I have installed Adobe's free Digital Editions software (although I have other software for reading ePubs, eg. from my Sony Reader), but that made no difference. With my InDesign document open the above option just is not available to me & nowhere I can find on this site suggests how I can make it available.
Hopefully it is something obvious to others, but I'm afraid I do not find InDesign to be intuitive. I'd be grateful for any help in getting this to work.

There has been a previous case on here where replacing preferences helped in a case like this.
Since it's visible (but not selectable) in your menu, it's not the case described in here?
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/692026?tstart=0
(where the issue seems to be InDesign has to be installed on a C drive....)
Thanks both of you for suggestions.
My InDesign CS4 is on C drive Windows XP, so with my husband's help (he is more 'techy' and I was worried about losing all my default styles, formats, etc) we tried Stix's suggestion as it had a specific mention of a similar problem solved by Marie. This one had not come up on my forum searches before.
We downloaded & installed the Preference Manager folder in my Scripts as directed, but although it was an option at the end of the Preferences menu it was greyed out so inaccessible. Also still greyed out were the Export to Digital editions & export to Dreamweaver options as before, either with or without document open, before and after computer restarts. Interestingly these two options are not included in my Menus options (above Preferences on Edit menu) where you can select which items you want visible. Is this significant?
We also reinstalled the 'Adobe extend script tool kit', although it was already there. Are there any other 'plug ins' or something I should have installed to address the Preference manager and Export options?
.... so no progress to date! Any more ideas?
Sylvia
Reply to Stix & Peter's suggestion.
Saw Marie's response to your suggested link - but not been able to achieve replacing preferences.
As per my reply here
- I first tried using the 'free script from inTools.com to backup & store multiple sets of preferences' - but as per my reply several days ago after your response above We downloaded & installed the Preference Manager folder in my Scripts as directed, but although it was an option at the end of the Preferences menu it was greyed out so inaccessible. (same as Export to Digital editions from individual doc or book, which is what I am trying to do). I don't even know how clean the epub file will be if I get there, but the PDFs I convert through external software still have too many errors to correct.
- As there was no reply yet I thought I'd bite the bullet & have a go at the previous suggestion on link to 'trashing preferences' & rename the InDesign Defaults & InDesign Saved data files, but I can only find the first one, now renamed OLD-InDesign Defaults in same place - hope that is OK.
- I do not have a CACHE folder after my English language folder, nor can I see 'InDesign Saved Data' file in any of the other folders. re Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\
I really don't want to lose all my print & doc presets formats, styles, etc which have evolved over some time now and can't remember how i created most of them.
HELP PLEASE. WHAT TO TRY NEXT?
Sylvia
PS I've also replied to Peter's 'trashing' thread, but here too in case someone else sees it and can help.
PROBLEM RESOLVED - although I struggled with replacing InDesign Preferences and putting my print & document defaults back after as outlined by 'trashing' entry from Peter Spier. All's well that ends well ... Thanks so much. :-)
My text styles, colours used and other object, swatch styles, etc seem OK within my documents, so I guess I have not edited defaults (too much).
The resulting e-pub file does have images in wrong places and a few formatting errors but has stripped headers and footers, coped with Greek letters and is better than from a PDF converter I found. I have read and printed off details about anchoring my images, creating TOCs, etc which is my next task.
I did find an epub editor called Sigil which may make editing from the resulting file easier for me.
Thanks again Peter (& Stix for pointing me in the right direction)
