After backing up the involved files, and copying the new files to the appropriate locations, during AI startup I get
Error loading plugins.
SVG File Format.aip
and then
The operation cannot complete because of
an unknown error. [EXST]
And inside Illustrator, there are multiple instances of the affected Window menu entries.
I rolled back to the backups for now, but I'd be interested in getting past this.
Thanks,
Allen
UPDATE:
Unfortunately, after restoring the original files, I still get the same two errors during program loading.
I also get (every other load) the message:
Some plug-ins have been updated. You will need to
relaunch Illustrator for the changes to take effect.
when the app is finished loading.
And the Window menu has duplicate entries for:

Could you give this a try.
- Uninstall Adobe Illustrator CS5 using the Cleaner Tool: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/829/cpsid_82947.html
- Install Adobe Illustrator CS5 and upgrade it to version 15.0.1. (Help > Updates)
- Then install the HTML5 Pack for Illustrator as described.
It may be possible that there were issues with the base installation of Illustrator CS5.

Looks like there are duplicate entries of these four plug-ins present, remove any duplicate entries of the following plugs-ins inside the sub folder of "Adobe Illustrator CS5 > Plug-ins" folder
Art Style.aip
CharParaStyles.aip
Layers Panle.aip
SVG File Format
Once the duplicate entries are removed (make sure to keep the back-up of them outside the Illustrator application folder), delete the preferences to remove the traces of duplicate entries.
Preferences for Win 7 is available at
{drive}\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings\
Hi Neeraj,
The Adobe page for the cleaner tool indicates that I have to begin by uninstalling the entire Master Collection. Is this really true?
Specifically, it says that Before You Start -- uninstall the Creative Suite.
Then it says to uninstall the application in Programs and Features.
Then it appears to be describing what might be a completely separate process -- using the Adobe cleaner to remove the product again.
These instructions are illogical the way they are presented, unless perhaps one already knows what they're referring to. I am naturally very reluctant to uninstall the entire suite.
Should I just run the Adobe Cleaner script without first uninstalling everything? Without first uninstalling Illustrator?
Thanks,
Allen
Hi Rama,
You may have identified the problem. I didn't realize Illustrator would scan all files in its installation folder tree, so I had my backup in a bad location.
I have moved the backup, but when you say to delete the preferences, do you mean JUST the AIPrefs file, or ALL the files (about 12 files) in the settings folder? Or perhaps even all the other folders in the settings folder (Brushes, Composite Fonts, Graphic Styles, ..., Plug-ins, ..., Workspaces)?
Thanks,
Allen
UPDATE:
Before determining exactly what to delete in the Preferences folder(s), I launched Illustrator, got the same error messages one time, and now on all subsequent launches there are no more errors, and all the duplicate plugins have disappeared.
So the problem appears to be solved without having to reinstall Illustrator.
Thanks very much for the help. I would still be interested to know what parts of the Settings folder tree could be safely deleted, if you have a chance to reply.
And of course I'm tempted to try the HTML5 pack again, but I'll have to wait until I've completed some important work in Illustrator today.

I would recommend that you un-install 'only' Illustrator using the Suite un-installer, and then clean the preferences. Also after the unistall, make sure there are no files/folders left for Illustrator CS5 in the Program Files. If you see files/folders there, you can manually delete that.
Then, re-installI Illustrator CS5, run the updater for 15.0.1 and over it install the HTML5 Pack for it.
I don't think you should use the Cleaner Tool if you have other CS5 applications working fine and you don't want to unistall those. I recommended the Cleaner Tool thinking of Illustrator CS5 installation only.
Hope this helps.

Thanks!
(OT) Now I just have to figure out how to get the updates for Dreamweaver 5.0.3 and Premiere Pro 5.0.2 to install. I've tried temporarily moving their settings folder(s) but the installs just don't work.
Can you perhaps direct me to the proper forum for reporting this? There doesn't seem to be a forum for Updater.
Thanks,
Allen
UPDATE:
While using Illustrator, I found that it repeatedly crashed whenever I clicked on the control bar's font color control.
Figuring I had nothing to lose after all this plugin shuffling, I re-installed the HTML5 pack files, and now everything again appears to work.
I'll post again if any other anomalies turn up.
It's worth noting that something about running Illustrator the way I did (with duplicate plugins) did not get fixed when I restored the proper original environment. However, it appears that the side-effect was canceled out once the HTML5 files were back where they belong. This means, of course, that if I were to require an uninstall, restoring the original 5 files might not actually work.
This implies, in turn, that simply backing up the 5 updated files might not be sufficient for installers of the HTML5 Pack. (However, it's possible that after the HTML5 Pack has run successfully, replacing the 5 files might not introduce side-effects.)

I think it's reasonable to assume that installing anything from Labs is pretty much equivalent to installing a Beta, so it wasn't too surprising that there were some glitches. In my case, the glitches were a side-effect of having placed my backup of the pre-updated files in a folder where Illustrator could still find them. After moving them farther up the folder tree, the install problem disappeared. So this is more of a documentation issue -- the install instructions should explicitly direct the user to locate the backup outside the Illustrator folder(s). Adobe wouldn't expect the average user to be following manual installation procedures from Labs, especially for advanced features like the HTML5 Pack. I'm glad they give us an opportunity to try out these new capabilities before they hit the main stream, but I don't think we should be too surprised if our experiments with Labs items are a little risky.
My problems updating Dreamweaver (which already has the HTML5 plugin) are unrelated to this forum. Same with Premiere Pro.
