Playback jerky, need a new graphic card?

Hi all,

 

I am using Premiere Pro CS4 currently.

With my graphic card GT8800 Alpha Dog 512mb, is it good enough for video editing?

 

When I playback the video on Premiere, it seem very laggy and obviously, it is not smooth at all.

I imported HD format of 1920 by 1080, which is filmed using Canon 5D.

 

I am looking at nvidia GFX480/470 or quadro series as well. But I do want it to have the abilities for gaming too.

 

Please advise me.

    My best GUESS will be that your computer is not powerful enough, or is not configured, to edit that type of file

    - you need AT LEAST 2 drives for video editing, 3 is better
    - some HD formats work better with (require) RAID

    Thanks for the prompt response. I didn't know all these add up for the cause.

     

    I shall upgrade my video card to see if this is the cause before deciding a Drobo raid HDD.

    Unfortunately, with video-editing, so much plays a major role in all things. It is not as easy as it looks, or as it is billed to be by others. So very much "stuff" to consider, and all of it can play a major roll. That is why we so often add many links to our replies. It's a bit of a "shotgun" approach, but with so many important variables, we hope to hit the target with a few pellets.

    Yes, the GTX 470 is "more than enough" for video editing

     

    But, before you buy anything, you REALLY need to take the time to go through the troubleshooting steps, and report back with the information so someone may be able to help

    Thanks.

     

    My media cache is on C drive and it is about 20% free now.

    Other than that, there's nothing I can do from there as I had go through the setting already.

     

    I read that recommendation by Adobe is 9800GT and above, but mine is 8800GT.

    If 470 is "more than enough", is 480 more recommended?

    Using any version of Premiere prior to CS5, the video card will make little or no difference in the editing experience.  The largest performance factors will be first the CPU and second the memory.  Look there before buying a new graphics card.

     

    Having said that, CS5 was designed with DSLR footage in mind, CS4 wasn't.  So your best bet would be to upgrade Premiere before buying any new hardware.

    To  add to Jim's comment, NEVER buy a Drobo for video editing. It is way too slow and only good for backups.

     

    For CS4 lackluster performance is cpu/memory/disk dependent.

     

    For CS5 add a video card to the equation, but not yet.

    I just downloaded CS5 Premiere Pro trial, and it works! The video playback on it work flawlessly! I am so happy with it right now!

    Harm - Really? Maybe I should upgrade my HDD to 2TB first since it is getting low. As for now, it works.. I indeed save up because of everyone's help here.
