"failed to retrieve item info" error when publising to Facebook

Sep 26, 2010 12:25 PM

I started to get the error mentioned in the title when I try to to pulish new pics to my Facebook account (existing folder, additional photos). This has worked before. Any idea what this means and how to resolve it?

It seems to always add the first photo on the list to Facebook, despite of the error. And it does it multiple times (multiple copies in Facebook) if I try to publish multiple times...

Using Lightroom 3.2 on Windows 7 x64.

I am having this exact same problem.  I'm using a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and Lightroom 3.2.  Publishing to SmugMug works every time.  Each time I try to publish to a Facebook folder I get this same error "failed to retrieve item info".  The first picture gets published over and over again but the others do not.  I have tried authorizing and deauthorizing my Facebook account and also deleting the publish services setup in Lightroom.  No luck!

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

My problem occurs when I am exporting within LR - I don't export out to another program.

Exact same issue (one pic only and same error message) - so I was glad to see your suggestion of the jF plugin, and yes - that works fine - thanks

Would be nice for the built in to work though.

I have the same problem, using Lightroom 3.2 and tyring to publish photos to Facebook.  I think it may have something to do with a previously published photo that had a modification to keyword.  It originally asked to republish these photos, but I would lose any comments associated with them.  I answered no to this, but then seems to get stuck in a publishing loop.  The first photo I am trying to publish appears to e getting duplicated on Facebook.

I suspect this is a bug with the Publish to Facebook feature in 3.2.

I've just stared getting the same error, is there any solution to this problem without resorting to third party pluggins?

I haven't seen one.  The problem appears to be after uploading the image to FB and requesting the object info via the API. This fails, causing Lr to abort the operation.  But one image actually has been uploaded. Sounds like an API communications issue not handled gracefully by the plugin.

Honestly, I may just switch to Friedl's uploaders since everything he does is usually pretty bullet-proof.

I'm having the same issue. I'm a new LR user so at first I thought it was my noobness....Only workaround I have figured out is to resort the images so after each failed upload so you can then upload the next first image in your collection....very annoying.

This is definitely a bug somewhere.  I'm having the same problem.  I have created several Facebook albums, all from Lightroom.  However, today I can't, and I get this error.  It publishes one photo, renamed (not the way I told it to), then stops.  Each time it publishes another copy of the same photo (incorrectly renamed).  It doesn't matter if I create a new album, or try to republish one that's worked before.  It doesn't matter if I re-authenticate LR to Facebook.

However, Jeffrey Friedl's plug-in, which I've downloaded today, works perfectly.

Using LR 3.3 W7 64-bit.  When it was working OK, it might have been with the previous version (3.1?).

    HI All,

I too am having this issue.  Lightroom 3.3 / Win7 / x64.  Have tried the following without success.

Renamed preference file and had the system build a new one.

         Created a new catalogue.

Removed facebook authentication and started again.

         tried existing albums

         tried new albums

Have not tried a rebuild of my machine.

None of it works, always exactly the same error:  first picture is load to facebook, and then your out of there.

My vote is that this is a bug as the third party plugin works perfectly.

Not so patiently  waiting for a solution.

    Craig

Same problem as everyone else "Failed to retrieve item info" after upload. Photo uploads OK but does not transfer to the 'published' area in Lightroom and remains in 'to publish'. This problem has been around for months now but has only occurred after I re-installed LR3.3, could the problem lie here somewhere, but why hasn't it righted itself?

Try logging out of the publish service and reauthenticating. But make sure you do this with a different browser -- one that you have never used to login to FB in the past so it forces you to authenticate fully via the browser, too. Do this by making your default browser some other browser temporarily.

This is clearly a bug and I hope Adobe addresses it in the next update.

The FB publish service is really a proof-of-concept more than anything -- like it or not! I recommend using Friedl's FB service. It has a lot more useful bells and whistles, and it can be cheap as you feel.

Other than that, this is some problem with getting publish/republish item info on the first rendition, which fails out the whole operation. We don't know why this is failing, and there is no debugging available to figure out why. Someone would have to create a similar plugin with debugging and hope they found the same problem.  FB recently updated their API, so this may be a problem that reflects that changes.

Friedl's stuff is updated a lot more often.

Tried removing authentication with no luck.

Might it have something to do with recent Facebook gallery changes?

I have had the same problem...I use LR 3.3 on a Mac with the latest version of Snow Leopard.  However, the publish to Facebook function worked just fine on Nov. 21, 2010, when I successfully uploaded 12 photos to Facebook without incident.  I also had no problem posting just one photo on Jan. 1, 2011.  As far as I can recall, there have been no upgrades to LR since that time.  Nonetheless, when I tried to upload 6 photos a couple of days ago, I got the error message.  My own work around is to publish just one at a time, which is ok for me since I don't put much on Facebook.  Still, it would be really nice to know why this problem is happening.

I dont understand why this issue has been around since at least September and yet I do not see any response from someone on the LightRoom team.  What gives?  Can't you at least give us a status update as to what is going on here?  This is rediculous.

These are user-to-user forums; Adobe does not troll these forums looking for work.

EIther raise this with Adobe, if you like, or wait Or use Friedl's plugin, which is much better.

We have been looking at this but haven't been able to reproduce it in house yet. CSS Simon, if you're still watching, I'd appreciate if you could explain what renaming option you're trying to use and how the names are coming out on Facebook instead. That sounds suspicious.

Are others who are hitting this error also using renaming options or finding that photos are ending up on Facebook with unexpected names?

    Hi Julie,

I too am having the same issue, Win 7 x64 and LR 3.3. The issue is happening since around Sep or Nov 2010. The issue is the following: if you have a bunch of pictures marked to be published to FB, and try to publish them, it will only upload 1 picture, and then an error message will pop up "Failed to Retrieve Item Info". In FB only 1 picture gets uploaded (correctly named in my case). But the main bug I think we are all experiencing in this thread is NOT the random renaming of pictures (maybe that's a different bug, doesn't happen to me). The bug people are writing about in this thread is that the Publish to Facebook functionality has been broken for several months now, exiting with an error message. Functionality to publish to other services is not damaged, since I can publish to Flickr and others completely fine (the same pics that are giving me problems for FB).

We think we have a fix but would appreciate getting a few more people to help test it since we have never been able to reproduce it ourselves. It would involve swapping in a different version of the Facebook plug-in. Any volunteers?

    Hi Julie,

I would love to try it out for you.  It would be great to see this problem finally resolved!  I've resorted to exporting out of Lightroom, importing in to iPhoto and then uploading to Facebook.  Not fun!

Thanks for your work on this issue.
