Importing Microsoft Word document with images to InDesign CS5

Aug 26, 2010 5:28 AM

Hey,

I'm trying to import a MS Word document that contains inline images to InDesign CS5.

I tried File->Place with checking "Import Inline Graphics" but unfortunately it imports the document without the images, there are blank regions where the images are suppose to be.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Kathy

Is this a DOC or DOCX file? Do any of the image files show up in the links panel?

How did those pictures get into the Word document? C/P? Insert?

Try this....open the file in Word and save as a web page. That should create a new folder containing the pictures.

I just wanted to check to see if the images would show up there...do they?

Another thought. Are the images not there at all or are they grayed out?

I found that a .docx file wouldn't import the images, but a .doc file would. Also, when exporting as a web page, I'm pleasantly surprised to find that the images export in high resolution rather than 72 dpi (which is helpful for importing into inDesign!).

I do not have problem to import MS Word images, problem is when importing charts in docx format. My problem is because whatever I do to center images, basicaly to wrap text in MS Word, images appears in InDesign on the left side, left aligned. Only way to center images on page is to cut, paste and then center image with InDesign Align panel. Another way I know is to work with anchored object (right click > anchored objects) and thats what I do not like. Anyway is there any script or option to select all images imported with Word file in Indesign and center them (align and wrap). Why to insert images in Word? Because I need them, I am writing tutorials and software how-tos, books.

Seems to me all you really need to do is put the image in its own center-aligned paragraph, but maybe you mean you expect text to wrap on the sides, too.

    A screen shot would help...

Yes, aligning image on its own paragraph works, I will skip wraping text inside paragraph, this can be done inside InDesign. Here is one part of Internet PDF books I am talking about, both are in Serbian http://issuu.com/bojan_zivkovic/docs/prikazivanje_slika_u_adobe_photos hop_elements - word + indesign, http://www.scribd.com/doc/49583823/Nau%C4%8Dite-Adobe-Photoshop   - indesign only

Basicaly I am writing tutorials then turn them into PDF books, for now.

Thank you, I never try to insert image on its own paragraph.
